Poznan is considered the cradle of the Polish state. Poland was born as a nation here in the 10th century, and you can see that in every corner. Throughout the centuries it was disputed between Poles and Germans, which explains its architectural and cultural mix.
Today it is a university city, modern and very active, but without losing its historical essence. Understanding this past helps a lot to appreciate the places you are going to visit.
Stary Rynek: the historical heart of the city
If there is one unmissable thing to do in Poznan, it is the Stary Rynek, or Old Market Square. It is one of the most beautiful squares in Central Europe.
The Town Hall and the famous goats
The most iconic building is the Renaissance Town Hall. Every day at 12 noon, two mechanical goats come out of the clock and “butt” their heads. It is a local tradition that attracts both tourists and locals.
Colorful little houses and local atmosphere
Surrounding the square, you will see perfectly preserved colorful houses, full of bars, restaurants, and cafes. It is ideal for sitting down, watching life go by, and feeling the pulse of the city.
Cathedral Island (Ostrów Tumski)
This is the oldest place in Poznan and one of the most historically important.

It is the oldest cathedral in Poland. The country’s first kings are buried inside. The visit is quiet and very interesting, even if you are not a fan of religious tourism.
Sunset walk along the Warta River
Walking around the island at sunset was one of our favorite moments. There is a peace that is hard to find in more touristy cities.
Walk across the Jordan Bridge (Most Jordana)
The Jordan Bridge is a modern pedestrian bridge that connects the center with more residential areas of Poznan. It’s not a tourist must-see, but it is a nice walk if you like to walk aimlessly and see the city from another perspective. We crossed it several times during our stay and found it interesting to observe local daily life, especially at sunset, when the surroundings become quieter and more photogenic. It is one of those simple places that add up when you stay several days in the city.
Imperial Castle of Poznan
Built at the beginning of the 20th century for the German Emperor Wilhelm II, this castle is unique in its style. Today it functions as a cultural center, with exhibitions, cinema, and events.
We were surprised at how well integrated it is into the daily life of the city.
