Introduction to El Cotillo and its unique charm
It has been more than four years since we chose to live in Fuerteventura, and when we lived in the north, escaping to El Cotillo was almost a ritual. We loved its calm, its beaches, and that authentic air it still preserves.
This small fishing village in the northwest of the island has a different energy: calm, sincere, without pretensions. Every time we went, we felt as if time stood still for a little while.
In this guide, we want to share with you things to do in Cotillo – Fuerteventura, not only from the perspective of a curious traveler but also from our experience of living here. We are going to tell you about our favorite places, secret spots, and some tips that you only learn with time.

How to get to and get around El Cotillo
One of the advantages of living in Fuerteventura is that everything is relatively close, and El Cotillo has very comfortable access via paved roads throughout the journey, which makes traveling simple and safe.
El cotillo fuerteventura how to get there:
To locate ourselves: from the Fuerteventura airport to El Cotillo, it takes approximately 45 minutes by car; from Corralejo, only 25 minutes; from Caleta de Fuste, about 50 minutes approx; and if you are coming from Morro Jable, the route is one of the longest, around 1 hour and 50 minutes.
We always recommend renting a car, especially if you plan to visit several beaches or explore more hidden coves, although public transport also reaches the town (not the beaches), though the schedules do not always match the beach plans or the perfect sunset.
Brief history of El Cotillo and its cultural context
Before becoming a tourist destination, El Cotillo was a small fishing village. Its history is deeply linked to the sea: to fishing, trade, and the defense of the coastline.
The Tostón Tower, which is still perfectly preserved, was built in the 18th century to protect the area from pirate attacks. Today it is one of the symbols of the village and a must-see stop if you want to soak up some local history.
Over the years, tourism has grown, but El Cotillo has never lost its essence. Although year by year construction has increased a lot in entire blocks 😕. Unlike other more urbanized areas, everything here continues to have that relaxed and authentic air that we like so much.
The old town / small village of El Cotillo and its fishing port
Every time we go, we loved getting lost in the old town. Its little white houses, the pier, the sound of the waves, and the restaurants with sea views create an atmosphere that is hard to forget.
The port still preserves part of the fishing soul of yesteryear. Sometimes, if you arrive early, you can see the fishermen unloading the catch of the day or preparing the nets.
Our favorite plan was to walk around the pier area, look for a terrace with a sea view, and sit down with a cold beer while the sun went down. There is no better way to end a day in the north or watching the sunset at the lighthouse or its cliffs.
Castle / Tostón Tower: history and panoramic views
One of the things to do in Cotillo is the Tostón Tower, that imposing round castle that dominates the coast. At the moment, it is closed. You can only take photos from below. They say it was built to defend against attacks by English and Berber pirates.
Tostón Lighthouse and Traditional Fishing Museum
The Tostón Lighthouse is another one of those places that cannot be missing from your tour of El Cotillo. It is a few minutes from the center, and the path to it is an experience in itself (note: it is not that close): arid landscapes, dunes, and the Atlantic accompanying you all the time.
Inside the lighthouse, the Traditional Fishing Museum operates, where you can learn what life was like for the ancient majorero fishermen. The exhibitions are simple but very interesting. Although it has been temporarily closed for some time now.
We usually recommend doing this at the end of the afternoon. The lighthouse illuminated by the sunset is a postcard image that stays with you forever.
This area is highly recommended for watching the sunset.
The best beaches in El Cotillo Fuerteventura – things to do in El Cotillo
If there is one thing that defines El Cotillo, it is its beaches. There is something for everyone: calm, family-friendly, wild, perfect for surfing, or simply for lying down and looking at the sea.
If you want to see the complete overview of the island, don’t miss our guide with the 20 best beaches in Fuerteventura, where El Cotillo has a prominent place.
Playa de La Concha and Los Lagos
Playa de la Concha is the best-known beach and a must-see in El Cotillo as it is one of the most beautiful on the island. Clear sand, turquoise water, and small lagoons that form with the tide. Ideal if you are looking for a quiet swim or if you are going with children, as there are usually not many currents or waves.
When we lived in the north, we went to La Concha often. We loved bringing some snacks, spending the afternoon between dips in the sea and mate on the beach. A classic that never fails.
Playa del Muelle
Closer to the village, it has a relaxed and local atmosphere. It is a good option for a quick dip and then staying to eat something in one of the bars at the port.
The essential beaches to see in the south of El Cotillo
Piedra Playa and the huge virgin beaches
To the south, the landscape changes completely: golden sand, cliffs, and a rougher sea. Piedra Playa is a paradise for surfers and wind lovers. It is not the best for swimming, but it is one of the most photogenic.
A little further away are beaches like Aljibe de la Cueva, more hidden and with that wild touch that we like so much. If you like to explore, it is worth dedicating a morning to finding them.
Also, in this area is the famous, photogenic Playa de la Escalera / Playa del Águila.
Surf and Water Sports in El Cotillo: The Wildest North of Fuerteventura
El Cotillo is, without argument, one of the best surf destinations in Fuerteventura. The constant swell of the Atlantic, the variety of beaches, and the school infrastructure make it a reference point for surfers of all levels, from beginners looking for their first waves to more experienced riders who come to take advantage of the north wind.
The best beaches for surfing in El Cotillo
- Piedra Playa: the local favorite for surfing and bodyboarding. More consistent waves, especially in winter. Not suitable for swimming but spectacular for those looking for adrenaline.
- Playa del Castillo / Escalera: good conditions for intermediate surfing and kitesurfing when there is a north wind.
Surf lessons in El Cotillo
There are several schools in the village with instructors in Spanish, English, and German. The rental equipment is well-maintained, and the groups are small. We took our first lessons here and it was a great experience: the instructors know perfectly well the conditions of each beach according to the wind and tide of the day.
Tip: before you go, check the Windguru or Windy app. Fuerteventura is not named that for no reason, and the wind can change conditions a lot in a few hours. The mornings are usually calmer.
Kitesurfing and wingfoiling
The constant north wind turns El Cotillo into a reference destination for kitesurfing and the emerging discipline of wingfoiling as well. There are specialized schools and demarcated areas so that there is no conflict between the different water activities.
Paddle surfing in the lagoons
For those who prefer something calmer, the lagoons of La Concha are ideal for stand-up paddleboarding. Flat waters, turquoise colors, and an environment that seems straight out of a postcard. Several companies rent boards directly on the beach.

Nature and hiking around El Cotillo
Beyond the beaches, there is much to explore on foot. From the Tostón Lighthouse, coastal trails depart with spectacular views of the Atlantic. You can also travel along the old lava paths or look for natural viewpoints with views of the village.

Local gastronomy: flavors of the sea and the interior
El Cotillo has a gastronomic offer that combines simplicity and flavor. As good Argentines, we appreciate a good meal and you eat very well here.
Some must-haves: fresh fish of the day, papas arrugadas with mojo, majorero cheese (a delight!), and homemade desserts with gofio.
Shopping, markets, and crafts
El Cotillo is not a place for shopping, but it is for taking home something authentic. There are small markets and craft shops where you can buy local products: ceramics, textiles, mojos, cheese, or even art made by residents.
We really like walking around the little shops in the old town at sunset. It has that village charm where everything is done without rushing.

Practical tips for your visit to El Cotillo / Fuerteventura
- Best time: all year round is good, but we prefer spring and autumn, when there is less wind and fewer tourists.
- What to bring: sunscreen, hat, swimsuit, and something warm for the nights (the wind can surprise you).
- Budget: there are options for all budgets. If you cook, there are supermarkets with good prices; if you eat out, lunch is around €15-20.
- Respect for the environment: please do not leave trash, do not stack stones, do not feed the squirrels, and do not use sunscreens harmful to the sea. El Cotillo stays beautiful because we all take care of it.
Things to do in Cotillo – Fuerteventura off the beaten path
If you have already visited the classics, dare to go a little further. There are nameless coves, dirt roads that lead to amazing views, and corners where almost no one goes.
Coastal path in the north Very beautiful (be careful, it is very broken in parts)
There is a ‘dirt’ road that goes north from El Cotillo, passing through Majanicho, to Corralejo (not the whole road is in good condition, proceed with great caution or with a high vehicle/truck). It is a very special road, where there are several puddles and coves.
Watching sunsets, “time stops…”
One of our favorite activities is watching the sunset from the lighthouse trails or on the cliffs on the other side of the village (towards the south, from Playa del Castillo onwards, or the famous Playa de la Escalera / Playa del Águila). There is no bar or music, just the sound of the sea and the wind. Pure magic.
Lajares and the Calderón Hondo Volcano
And if you have time, take the opportunity to explore slowly and get to know Lajares — the volcanic landscape is like something from another planet, incredible (try climbing the Calderón Hondo Volcano).
Getting to know the coastal village of Majanicho
We also recommend you visit Majanicho, a small fishing village between El Cotillo and Corralejo. It is another one of those places where it seems time stood still. As we mentioned before about the gravel/dirt road in the north, it is quite broken; if you want to go to Majanicho, it is better to return to Lajares and go up the paved road, directly to Majanicho.

Where to Stay in El Cotillo: Options for Every Traveler
El Cotillo does not have large hotel chains, and that is part of its charm. The offer consists of apartments, small hostels, and rural houses that maintain the authentic spirit of the village. Here we tell you about the areas and options we know.
Near the lagoons (north area)
The most popular area. Apartments and bungalows steps away from La Concha and the lagoons. Perfect if your priority is a calm beach and waking up to the sound of the sea. Prices are somewhat higher than in the center, but the location justifies it.
Town center / port area
For those who prefer to be in the heart of El Cotillo: near the restaurants, the market, and the local atmosphere. Busier than the north area but with easy access to everything. There are good apartments at reasonable prices, especially if you book well in advance outside of high season.
South area / access to Piedra Playa
Quieter and with less service infrastructure. Ideal for surfers or travelers looking to truly disconnect. Some rural houses with incredible views of the Atlantic.

Frequently asked questions about things to do in Cotillo
What are the beaches of El Cotillo like?
The beaches of El Cotillo are among the best in Fuerteventura. La Concha and its lagoons are ideal for families and beginners: turquoise, calm, and shallow waters. The southern beaches like Piedra Playa are perfect for surfing and bodyboarding. The sunsets from the cliffs are simply unique.
Is El Cotillo better than Corralejo?
It depends on what you are looking for. Corralejo is larger, with a wider range of restaurants, nightlife, and tourist services. El Cotillo is smaller, quieter, and more authentic. If you are looking for calm beaches, surfing, and truly disconnecting, El Cotillo wins. If you prefer more bustle and options, Corralejo is a better base. We love both for different reasons.
How much time should I dedicate to El Cotillo?
With half a day you can see the village, the Tostón Tower, and the lagoons of La Concha. To enjoy it well—with surfing, sunset at the lighthouse, and some coastal walking—you need at least a full day. If you want to stay overnight and explore the southern beaches and the road to Lajares, 2 nights is perfectly enough.
What is the best time to visit El Cotillo?
Spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October) are the best times: less wind than in winter, fewer tourists than in summer, and very pleasant temperatures. Summer (July-August) is high season: more people and higher prices, but with the best swimming conditions. Winter has more wind but is ideal for surfing and kitesurfing.
Can I surf in El Cotillo as a beginner?
Yes, perfectly. El Cotillo has surf schools with instructors for all levels. For beginners, classes are usually held in protected areas with more manageable waves. The lagoons of La Concha are also ideal for starting paddle surfing in very calm waters. We started surfing here and it was an excellent experience.
How many days should I stay in El Cotillo?
With two or three days you can see the essentials, but if you want to enjoy it calmly, stay for at least four.
Is it easy to get there without a car?
Yes, but getting around can be a bit more limited. With a car, you will be able to access more beaches and have more flexible schedules.
Is it a good destination for couples?
Totally. It is quiet, romantic, and has those sunsets that leave you speechless.
Can you surf all year round?
Yes, although the best time is usually between September and April, when the waves are more consistent.
Conclusion: why El Cotillo will always be special for us
After so many years living on the island, El Cotillo remains one of our favorite corners. It has that perfect mix of nature, history, and calm that made us fall in love from the first time.
Every time we return, we feel the same peace as when we arrived for the first time. And that, on an island as changeable and full of contrasts as Fuerteventura, is saying a lot.
If you are planning your trip, don’t miss the opportunity to get to know it.
