The best areas to stay in Fuerteventura

Broadly speaking, the island is divided into north and south, with a few gems in the middle. Each area has its own personality. Here is our review, area by area, with the pros and cons of each.

1- Corralejo: the area with the most atmosphere (our favorite in the North)

Corralejo is at the northern tip and is, for us, the best area to stay in Fuerteventura if it is your first time on the island. We spent our first long season here, and it stole our hearts.

Why do we like it so much? Because it has everything: life, restaurants, bars with live music, supermarkets, and at the same time, you are five minutes away from the famous dunes and beaches that look like they belong in the Caribbean. The old town, with its pedestrian streets and restaurants by the sea, has a special charm. In our case, we ended up walking there almost every day at sunset… and we never got tired of it.

Also, boats to Lobos Island depart from the harbor, which is an unmissable excursion. If you want to know everything you can do in the area, check out our complete guide on things to do in Corralejo.

Ideal for: first-timers, travelers looking for a lively atmosphere, surfers, those traveling without a car.

Worth noting: it gets quite crowded in high season, and accommodation prices are among the highest on the island.

things to do in corralejo

Our recommendations for where to stay in Corralejo:

➜ LUXURY €€€: Secrets Bahía Real Resort & Spa – The most famous 5-star hotel on the island, adults-only and beachfront with direct views of Lobos Island. We walked and biked past it a thousand times during our coastal sunsets and always said the same thing: if we ever splurge in Corralejo, this is the place. Spa, spectacular pools, and the dunes just a step away. Keep in mind that the hotel’s beach itself isn’t the best, though there are nicer ones a short walk away.

➜ MID-RANGE €€: Barceló Corralejo Sands – Right in the center, a 10-minute walk from the town/port and about 600 meters from the beach. It has pools, a spa, and a kids’ area including a pirate ship, so it works great for both couples and families. Unbeatable location to get around Corralejo on foot.

➜ BUDGET €: Las Marismas de Corralejo – Apartments with equipped kitchens, pools, and excellent value for money. Cooking some meals at your accommodation is the trick we always use to stretch our travel budget… and you can do it here without sacrificing comfort. Located next to the water park, a plus if you are traveling with kids.

Did you know…?

The Corralejo Dunes Natural Park covers more than 2,600 hectares and has a unique ecosystem in the Canaries, offering beaches that look like they were taken straight out of the Caribbean.

2- El Cotillo: tranquility, surfing, and the best sunsets (North Zone)

El Cotillo is in the northwest, about 20 minutes from Corralejo, and it is a different world. We also lived here for a season, and the word that best defines it is: peace.

It is a small fishing village with a laid-back, surfer vibe that you’ll fall in love with. The northern lagoons (La Concha and others) are perfect for families because the water stays as calm as a swimming pool. And the sunsets… we are not exaggerating when we say they are some of the best we have seen in all our years of traveling. We would sit on the cliffs in front of the El Tostón lighthouse with some beers, and it was the perfect plan.

However: the range of restaurants and shops is much more limited than in Corralejo, and there is little nightlife. For us, that is part of the charm, but it depends on what you are looking for. We share all the corners in our article on things to do in El Cotillo.

Ideal for: couples, surfers, digital nomads, those looking to truly unplug.

Worth noting: it is best to have a car to get around, and there are fewer nightlife options.

things to do in el cotillo

Our recommendations for sleeping in El Cotillo:

➜ LUXURY €€€: El Hotelito del Cotillo – A small, highly charming, adults-only boutique hotel with a hot tub and terrace. In a town as quiet as El Cotillo, this style of intimate accommodation fits perfectly. Ideal for a romantic getaway with those sunsets that we fell in love with so much.

➜ MID-RANGE €€: Coral Cotillo Beach – One of the best-rated hotels in town, with a pool and a few minutes from the northern lagoons, those with calm water that look like a natural pool. A very good option if you are traveling with family and want the best beaches for kids just a short walk away.

➜ BUDGET €: Apartamentos Juan Benítez – Simple apartments but with a location that is worth its weight in gold: on the promenade and next to the old port, where the restaurants with the best views in town are located. You step out of your accommodation and you are already in the heart of El Cotillo.

3- Costa Calma: endless beaches and family plans (South Zone)

Moving down to the south. Costa Calma was another of our homes for several seasons on the island and is the gateway to the Jandía peninsula, where the most spectacular beaches in Fuerteventura are located.

The absolute star here is Sotavento beach: kilometers upon kilometers of white sand with a lagoon that forms with the tide and looks like it was taken straight out of the Maldives. Seriously, the first time we saw it, we couldn’t believe it. It is also a world-class mecca for windsurfing and kitesurfing.

This area is more of a resort area than a village: many large hotels, ideal for those looking for a comfortable, beach-focused trip. Don’t expect a charming old town, because it doesn’t exist. But if your plan is beach, beach, and more beach, it is a sure winner.

➜ See Accommodation Prices in Costa Calma (CLICK HERE)

Ideal for: families, lovers of long beaches, windsurfers and kitesurfers.

Worth noting: it is one of the windiest areas on the island (hence the kitesurfing, haha) and you need a car to explore.

costa calma where to stay

Our recommendations for sleeping in Costa Calma:

➜ LUXURY €€€: Zel Fuerteventura by Meliá – Adults-only and beachfront on Sotavento beach, meaning you have that postcard-worthy turquoise lagoon practically at your doorstep. Pools, spa, and a modern design that many travelers highlight in their reviews. If your plan is total relaxation in front of one of the best beaches in Europe, this is a great catch.

➜ MID-RANGE €€: Hotel Taimar – One of the best-rated in the area, about 10 minutes from the center of Costa Calma and about a 10-minute walk from the beach. It is a family favorite for its pool and quiet atmosphere. Good value for money for a beach base in the south.

➜ BUDGET €: Royal Suite – Bungalows surrounded by gardens and palm trees, with a pool and a short walk from Costa Calma beach. No luxuries, but everything you need for a beach vacation on a budget, with a 7.9 rating on Booking. Many travelers return year after year, and that’s a good sign.

4- Morro Jable: the extreme south and the perfect base for Cofete (South Zone)

Morro Jable is the last large town in the south, and we also lived there for a season. It has something we love: it combines a huge turquoise-water beach (Matorral beach) with a real village, complete with its harbor, fresh fish restaurants, and local life.

A detail few know: on Matorral beach, it is very common to see stingrays swimming near the shore. We were amazed the first time we saw them.

But the main reason to stay here is that it is the best base to visit Cofete, that wild and virgin 12-kilometer beach that, for us, is one of the most impressive we have seen in the world. The road is dirt and quite bumpy, so the closer you are, the better. We share the whole adventure in our post about Cofete beach.

➜ See Accommodation Prices in Morro Jable (CLICK HERE)

Ideal for: couples, travelers looking for spectacular beaches, and a starting point for Cofete.

Worth noting: it is far from everything else; going to the north is a full-day excursion.

morro jable beach

Our recommendations for sleeping in Morro Jable:

➜ LUXURY €€€: Iberostar Selection Fuerteventura Palace – A 5-star hotel facing Matorral beach, the same one where we walked every day and saw rays swimming near the shore. Pools, spa, and direct access to kilometers of white sand. One of the highest-rated hotels in the entire south.

➜ MID-RANGE €€: MUR Hotel Faro Jandía & Spa – About 300 meters from the beach with views of the Jandía lighthouse, which can be seen from all over Matorral beach. It has pools, a spa, and very good reviews for the friendliness of the staff. A comfortable, well-located base for excursions to the paradise of Cofete.

➜ BUDGET €: Apartamentos Igramar Morro Jable – Adults-only apartments on the promenade, two minutes from the beach and close to the old town with its fresh fish restaurants. With a kitchen to save on meals and a location that rivals much more expensive hotels.

5- Caleta de Fuste: convenience near the airport (Center Zone)

Caleta de Fuste is on the east coast, 10 minutes from the airport. We didn’t stay there, but we know it from passing through several times: it is a tourist area built around hotels and resorts, with an artificial beach and calm waters.

Many travelers choose it for its central location: you are halfway to everything, which makes it practical as a base to tour the island. Is it the most charming area? Honestly, no. But for convenience and price, it usually wins points, especially for short stays or trips with flights at difficult times.

➜ See Accommodation Prices in Caleta de Fuste (CLICK HERE)

Ideal for: short getaways, families looking for all-inclusive resorts, central location.

Worth noting: it lacks local atmosphere; it is a 100% tourist area.

morro jable beach

Our recommendations for sleeping in Caleta de Fuste:

➜ LUXURY €€€: Sheraton Fuerteventura Beach, Golf & Spa Resort – The reference 5-star hotel in the area, beachfront, with 4 pools, a spa, and a golf course next door. Many travelers choose it as a luxury base due to its proximity to the airport and its central location to explore the island.

➜ MID-RANGE €€: Barceló Fuerteventura Royal Level – Adults Only – Facing the sea and adults-only, with a pool, gym, and some of the best ratings in Caleta de Fuste. A comfortable option if you are looking for peace and quiet without kids around and a service that reviews highlight over and over again.

➜ BUDGET €: Caleta Dorada – Apartments with pools and terraces about a 10-minute walk from the beach and the marina. Simple, with a 7.7 booking rating, kitchen, and a good price. Perfect as a budget base for short stays or for those who plan to spend the day touring the island.

6- Puerto del Rosario (Center Zone) and the interior: authentic and affordable Fuerteventura

Puerto del Rosario is the island’s capital and almost no tourists stay there. Our verdict? For a short beach stay, we wouldn’t choose it, but it has its points in its favor: it is where real local life happens, accommodation prices are notably lower, and you eat in local restaurants at local prices.

The interior of the island (towns like Betancuria, La Oliva, or Antigua) is a different story: volcanic landscapes, goats everywhere, and absolute tranquility. It is an option that many travelers in campers or with a rural spirit enjoy very much, although for us, it works better as an excursion than as a base.

➜ See Accommodation Prices in Puerto del Rosario (CLICK HERE)

Ideal for: tight budgets, long stays, those looking for authenticity.

Worth noting: car essential and urban beaches that are not the best on the island.

puerto del rosario where to stay fuerteventura

Some recommendations for sleeping in Puerto del Rosario and the interior:

➜ TOP RATED: El Mirador de Fuerteventura – Steps from Playa Blanca, the best beach near the capital, with a garden, terrace, and free parking. One of the newest and best-rated in the area, ideal if you want to combine capital city prices with a nice beach at your doorstep (it has black sand, some waves, sometimes people surf there).

➜ RURAL OPTION: Hotel Rural Rosario Martin – A little rural hotel with a pool and parking, perfect for experiencing the authentic Fuerteventura of the interior (it’s in Tefia, almost in the middle of the island). If you are looking for silence, starry skies, and total disconnection, this style of accommodation is a winner that many travelers highlight.

➜ BUDGET €: Hotel Tamasite – A central classic in the capital, simple and at prices hard to beat in the rest of the island. Steps from local restaurants where you can eat well and cheaply. However, don’t expect too much; it is a bit older and has a modest 6.6 rating on Booking. For very short stays or very tight budgets, it could be fine.

Where to stay in Fuerteventura: north or south?

The million-dollar question. We’ve been asked a thousand times, and the short answer is: it depends on your trip.

Choose the north (Corralejo or El Cotillo) if: it’s your first time, you want atmosphere and restaurants, you are going surfing, you are traveling without a car, or you want to combine it with a getaway to Lanzarote (the ferry leaves from Corralejo). By the way, if you are hesitating between the two islands, check out our comparison of Fuerteventura or Lanzarote.

Choose the south (Costa Calma or Morro Jable) if: your priority is long, extensive beaches, you are traveling with family, you want to see Cofete, or you are looking for a more relaxing, resort-style trip.

What if you have more than 5 nights? Do what we do with all the friends who visit us: split the stay. A few nights in the north and a few in the south. That way you see both sides of the island without spending your whole trip in the car.

Where to stay in Fuerteventura without a car

We’ll tell you with total honesty: Fuerteventura is an island best explored by car. Public transport exists (buses run well between the main towns), but schedules are limited and many spectacular spots are out of reach.

Now, if your plan is not to rent a car, the best area is undoubtedly Corralejo. Why? Because everything is within reach: urban beaches, the dunes (you can go walking or by bus in 10 minutes), restaurants, the boat to Lobos, and organized excursions that pick you up at the hotel. We spent entire weeks there without touching a car, and we didn’t miss anything.

As a second option, Morro Jable also works: the town is walkable, and Matorral beach is at your doorstep.

Where to stay in Fuerteventura without wind (or with less wind)

Let’s talk about the elephant in the room: the wind. Fuerteventura is windy, especially from May to August. There is no area with zero wind, but there are more protected areas.

In our experience, the areas with the least wind are usually Caleta de Fuste (its bay is quite sheltered) and the east beaches like Las Playitas or Gran Tarajal. In the north, the lagoons of El Cotillo also offer protected nooks between the rocks.

The windiest? Costa Calma and the Sotavento area. It is no coincidence that it is the windsurfing capital of the world… If you travel in winter (from November to February), the wind drops significantly all over the island, and this issue stops being a problem.

Where to stay in Fuerteventura as a couple

If you are traveling as a couple, our heartfelt recommendation is El Cotillo. Movie-like sunsets, dinners by the sea in the old port, calm lagoons to spend the day… it has everything for a romantic getaway. We have beautiful memories of our seasons there.

Alternatively, Morro Jable is also a winner: charming hotels, the huge beach to walk hand-in-hand, and the excursion to Cofete as a shared adventure. Is there anything more romantic than a 12-kilometer virgin beach almost all to yourselves?

Did you know…?

Cofete beach, located at the extreme south of Fuerteventura, is considered one of the most impressive virgin beaches in the world, stretching over 12 kilometers.

Practical tips before booking your accommodation

After so many seasons on the island, there are things we learned the hard way through trial and error. Take note:

  • Book in advance: Fuerteventura receives tourism all year round. In the European summer and Christmas, prices rise sharply and the best options fly off the shelves.
  • Look at the exact location: “Corralejo” can be the walkable old town or a development 3 km away. It is not the same, especially without a car.
  • Rent the car together with the accommodation: car rental prices rise significantly close to the date. And book it with a full/full tank, which is the most transparent option.
  • Bring a windbreaker jacket: yes, even in summer. The wind and cool nights surprise more than one person.
  • Travel insured: even though the Canary Islands are part of Spain, if you are coming from Argentina or another country in Latin America, an unforeseen medical emergency can be very expensive. We never travel without coverage; we tell you which one we use and why in our guide on the best travel insurance for Europe.

And one more thing: the ideal season for us is from October to December or March to May. Good weather, fewer crowds, and better prices. You can consult more official information about the island on the Canary Islands tourism website.

Frequently asked questions about where to stay in Fuerteventura

What is the best area to stay in Fuerteventura?

For a first visit, Corralejo is the best area: it combines spectacular beaches, dunes, village life, restaurants, and good connections to the rest of the island. If you are looking for tranquility, El Cotillo; if you are looking for endless beaches, the south (Costa Calma or Morro Jable).

Is it better to stay in the north or south of Fuerteventura?

The north has more atmosphere, charming villages, and the best waves for surfing. The south has longer and more spectacular beaches, ideal for families and relaxation. If you have more than 5 nights, the ideal is to split your stay between both.

How many days do I need in Fuerteventura?

We recommend a minimum of 5 days to see the essentials without rushing. With a week, you can tour the entire island calmly, including Cofete, Lobos, and the inland villages. We have lived there for entire seasons and always find new spots.

Can you tour Fuerteventura without a car?

You can, but with limitations. Staying in Corralejo, you have beaches, dunes, and excursions within reach without driving. To visit other spots like Cofete, El Cotillo, or the interior, you will depend on organized excursions or renting a car for at least a couple of days.

Which is the least windy area of Fuerteventura?

Caleta de Fuste and the coves in the east (Las Playitas, Gran Tarajal) are usually more protected from the wind. Costa Calma and Sotavento are the windiest. In winter, the wind drops considerably throughout the island.

Is Fuerteventura expensive to stay in?

Compared to other European islands, it is reasonable. Corralejo and the southern resorts are the most expensive areas; Puerto del Rosario and the interior, the most affordable. By booking in advance and avoiding high season, you can find very good prices.

Our conclusion: the best area is the one that fits your trip

After 5 years of coming and going to this island we love so much, our answer to where to stay in Fuerteventura is clear: there is no perfect area, there is a perfect area for you. Corralejo for atmosphere and a first visit, El Cotillo to disconnect as a couple, Costa Calma for beach-loving families, and Morro Jable for those who dream of Cofete.

What we can assure you is that, whichever area you choose, the island will surprise you. It stole our hearts, and there’s a reason we’ve returned again and again.
