Introduction to Morro Jable: the south of Fuerteventura
Things to do in Morro Jable is one of those questions we enjoy answering because this corner of the south of Fuerteventura became part of our life since we decided to move to the island over four years ago. Although we only lived in Morro Jable itself for a few weeks, we are very close, and it is a place we return to time and time again.
When we lived in the south, we used to go to Morro Jable to ride bikes at sunset, cruising along the promenade while the sky paints itself in shades of orange and pink. We often ended the ride with some mate by the sea and, if the weather was nice (which it almost always is), a quick dip before heading home.
Other times we dedicated the full day to enjoying Playa del Matorral, one of our favorites for its length, crystal-clear water, and that relaxed vibe that makes time pass more slowly.
For all these reasons, we know that Morro Jable is not just a tourist destination: it is a place to enjoy, disconnect, and let yourself go with the gentle rhythm of the southern part of the island. And in this guide, we show you everything you can see and do to make the most of it.

A brief history of the old fishing village
Before becoming one of the island’s major tourist hubs, Morro Jable was a small fishing village isolated from the rest of Fuerteventura. Until the 70s, it could only be reached by dirt tracks, and life revolved around small boats, local families, and low houses facing the sea.
Growth was rapid, but even today you can notice that fishing heritage, especially if you explore the harbor or the old town. The locals who have lived there the longest always tell stories of how everything changed when the road was paved and the first European tourists began to arrive.
How to get to Morro Jable from anywhere in Fuerteventura
Getting there is simple:
- From Corralejo to Morro Jable: 1h 45m by car via the FV-2.
- From Puerto del Rosario (the capital): 1h 15m.
- From the Airport (El Matorral) to Morro Jable: 1h 15m.
- From Caleta de Fuste: 1h.
- Public transport: Line 1 of Tiadhe/Alsa connects Puerto del Rosario → Gran Tarajal → Costa Calma → Morro Jable.
The route is comfortable and in good condition, and as you get closer to the south, the landscape transforms into a golden desert with views of the Atlantic that seem out of this world.
Things to do in Morro Jable: must-sees you can’t miss
Promenade and coastal viewpoints
The promenade is one of our favorite places. It stretches in front of Playa del Matorral, with perfect viewpoints to see the sea from above. We walked here almost every evening when we lived in Morro Jable for a few days, and it never fails: there is always a gentle breeze, seagulls, and tourists mixed with locals who come out to walk, run, or ride bikes.
If you walk the whole way, you will find:
- benches to rest,
- small shops,
- paths leading directly down to the sand,
- and panoramic views of the lighthouse and the coast.
Sunset from here is a show in itself.
Morro Jable Beach: turquoise waters and golden sand
This is the main beach in the south of Fuerteventura. Long, wide, clean, and perfect for getting into the water without dangerous currents.
The best part:
-
the water color changes throughout the day,
-
there are quieter areas and others with services,
-
the sand is soft and doesn’t get as hot as on other volcanic beaches.
Even in peak season, you can always find a quiet spot.
The Morro Jable Lighthouse: an iconic southern postcard
One of the symbols of the place. You can walk there from the promenade, and it is an ideal spot for photos. From here, you can see the open sea and the protected salt marsh dunes, home to squirrels, herons, and small crustaceans. It is also a lovely place to watch the sunset.
The town / Old town: alleys, bars, and local life
The town/old town is small, but very authentic. We recommend walking through:
- Avenida del Saladar,
- Calle Nuestra Señora del Carmen,
- the small squares near the church,
- and the harbor area.
Here you will find traditional bars, ice cream shops, long-standing fish markets, and restaurants where the locals eat.
The Best Beaches of Morro Jable: which one to choose according to your plan
After months living in the south of Fuerteventura, we can say with conviction that the Morro Jable area concentrates some of the best beaches on the entire island. And not just because of the water: because of the environment, accessibility, and that relaxed vibe we like so much.
Playa del Matorral: the main one and the most complete
It is the urban beach of Morro Jable and probably the most visited in the south. Long, wide, with fine golden sand and calm waters that make it ideal for families. It has beach bars, sun loungers, showers, and direct access from the promenade. The water is crystal clear and the currents are mild, so you can go in safely even if you are not a strong swimmer. We come here when we want a full day at the beach without any hassle.
Playa de Butihondo: for swimming and enjoying in peace
A little further north, Butihondo has very fine sand and a sea that is a bit more active than Matorral, perfect for swimming. It is less crowded and has that local beach vibe we love. It is easily reached by car from the FV-2 and has parking nearby.
Playa de Esquinzo: the wildest in the area
If you are looking for silence and scenery, Esquinzo is your choice. Surrounded by low cliffs and with very little infrastructure, it is the beach for those who really want to disconnect. Fewer services, but much more natural environment. We visit it when we want to escape the tourism and be alone facing the Atlantic.
Which one to choose?
- Families with children → Playa del Matorral (services, calm waters)
- For swimming and water sports → Butihondo
- For disconnecting and nature → Esquinzo
They are all less than 10 minutes by car from the center of Morro Jable. If you have more than one day, visit all three. And if you want to see the complete panorama of the island’s beaches, don’t miss our guide to the ➜ 20 best beaches in Fuerteventura.
Nature and wildlife: outdoor activities in Morro Jable
Dolphin and whale watching
Several excursions depart from the harbor. The area is a natural route for bottlenose dolphins, pilot whales, and turtles. We have been on several and always saw marine life.
A tip: choose small boats for an experience that is more respectful of the environment.
Coastal hikes
There are easy trails from the lighthouse to Jandía. They are flat, safe, and have incredible views. When we have a free afternoon, we usually do these routes.
Things to do in Morro Jable: activities for every taste
Water sports
- snorkeling
- kayaking
- stand up paddleboarding
- windsurfing
The waters of the south are ideal for beginners.
Shopping in commercial areas
Avenida del Saladar is full of shops, souvenir stores, perfumeries, and some outlets.
Cultural visits
Small exhibitions, the Carmen church, and local murals complete the offerings.
Morro Jable Street Market
It’s not the best on the island, but if you happen to be passing by, you might find something you like.
Morro Jable Viewpoint (Church): a simple but charming view
The Morro Jable Viewpoint is located steps from the Church and is one of those little corners of Morro Jable that sometimes goes unnoticed, but is worth knowing. It is located right next to the town’s church, in the old part, and offers a beautiful view towards the harbor and the old town. It is not a huge or touristy viewpoint, but it has that authentic charm we like so much: small boats, white houses, and the daily movement of the fishermen. If you are touring the center, walk over for a minute… it is perfect for taking a quiet photo and seeing the town from a different perspective.
Excursions from Morro Jable: must-see places nearby
Jandía Natural Park
It is one of the wildest areas of Fuerteventura. Arid mountains, ravines, dirt tracks, and natural viewpoints.
Cofete Beach: the wild jewel
We are not exaggerating when we say that Cofete is one of the most impressive beaches in the world. Wild, lonely, and surrounded by giant mountains.
More Info: Cofete Beach – Guide
Cofete Viewpoint
A mandatory stop for a panoramic photo that will leave you speechless.
Tips for visiting Cofete
- Do not go with very low-clearance cars (the track is rough).
- Avoid days with strong wind.
- Bring water and sunscreen.
- If you are not a confident driver, take an authorized 4×4.
Sotavento Viewpoint and Beach
The Sotavento Viewpoint and Beach form one of the most spectacular landscapes in Fuerteventura. From the top of the viewpoint, you get impressive views of its extensive strip of golden sand and the lagoon that forms with the tide, ideal for photos and for enjoying nature. The beach, famous for its tranquility and for being a paradise for kitesurfing and windsurfing, is a must-see stop for those seeking beauty, vastness, and crystal-clear sea in the south of the island.

Where to eat in Morro Jable: restaurants we recommend
The gastronomic offer in Morro Jable is quite wide for the size of the town. You have everything from traditional tapas bars to restaurants with sea views. Here are our recommendations based on the type of food and budget.
Fresh fish and Canarian cuisine
The old harbor area is where you will find the best fish spots. The locals eat there: salted vieja (parrotfish), mojo canario, papas arrugadas (wrinkled potatoes). They are simple, without much marketing, but with real fresh produce. Look for restaurants with the menu written by hand on a chalkboard: they are usually the best.
Beach bars (Chiringuitos)
Along Matorral beach there are several beach bars where you can eat with your feet in the sand. Tourist prices, yes, but the atmosphere makes it worth it for a relaxed lunch. They are practical so you don’t have to leave the beach.
Budget-friendly options in the center
On Avenida del Saladar and surrounding streets, there are affordable daily menus. For travelers on a tight budget, it is the best option: between 10 and 14 euros for a starter, main course, and dessert.
Local tip: avoid restaurants with plastic food photos at the entrance and a menu in 6 languages right on the promenade. They are the most expensive and the least authentic. Walk two streets inland and you will find better quality for the same price.
Veggie and vegan options
There are more and more restaurants with vegan offerings, especially near the promenade.
Where to stay in Morro Jable: options for every type of traveler
Morro Jable has a wide range of accommodation ranging from large all-inclusive resorts to small apartments near the town. The choice depends on whether you want to be close to the main beach, the old town, or the quieter areas.
Matorral / Promenade Area
It is the most touristy area, with the majority of the large hotels. Perfect if you want direct access to the beach and all services at hand. Prices are higher, but the convenience is maximum.
Old Town / Harbor Area
For those looking for something more authentic, apartments in the old town are an excellent option. Cheaper, more local, and within walking distance of everything. We always prefer this area when we stay in Morro Jable.
