Gdynia is not a big city, but it stretches a lot along the coast. That is why the area you choose changes the trip quite a bit: stepping out of the hotel onto Świętojańska street is not the same as waking up next to the Orłowo cliff.

What Gdynia is like for choosing where to stay
Gdynia is part of the Tri-City together with Sopot and Gdańsk. The city stretches from north to south along the bay, and all the neighbourhoods in this guide are linked by the SKM urban train, which runs every few minutes.
This is key for deciding where to stay in Gdynia: even if you stay far from the centre, having a station nearby solves things. The stops that interest you most are Gdynia Główna (centre), Gdynia Wzgórze Św. Maksymiliana, Gdynia Redłowo and Gdynia Orłowo.
In our case, we walked almost everywhere during the week and used the SKM only for the excursions to Sopot and Gdańsk. If you want more information about the city, the official Gdynia website has up-to-date transport and event information.
1. Centre (Śródmieście): the best area to stay in Gdynia on a first visit
It was our area and the one we recommend to most people. You have Skwer Kościuszki, the marina, the museum ships, the city beach and Świętojańska street, with its cafés, shops and supermarkets, a few minutes’ walk away.
In addition, Gdynia Główna station is close, so getting to Sopot or Gdańsk is very easy. At night the centre still has life, but without the bustle of other tourist destinations on the Baltic.
- Pros: everything is done on foot, lots of places to eat and the best train connection.
- Cons: in summer there is more activity and some streets have traffic.
Mercure Gdynia Centrum (mid-range)
⭐ 8.7/10 on Booking · 3,300+ reviews
It is the hotel we already recommend in our city guide and the most practical option in the centre. It is close to Świętojańska and Skwer Kościuszki, and some rooms have sea views. Ideal if you want to walk everywhere.
Courtyard by Marriott Gdynia Waterfront (high price)
⭐ 9.2/10 on Booking · 3,900+ reviews
It is in the Waterfront complex, next to the marina and steps from the harbour. A modern, comfortable option if you want a chain hotel with breakfast and views of the water.

My Story Gdynia Hotel (mid-range)
⭐ 9.4/10 on Booking · 1,100+ reviews
A four-star hotel on Zwycięstwa avenue, on the southern edge of the centre, a few minutes’ walk from Skwer Kościuszki. Many travellers choose it for travelling as a family and for its good value for money within its category.
Hotel Blick (budget)
⭐ 8.1/10 on Booking · 1,100+ reviews
It is on Jana z Kolna street, in the most port-side and everyday part of the centre. It is simple, but it puts you within walking distance of the city’s main sights for less money.
2. Kamienna Góra and Bulwar Nadmorski: sleeping by the sea
Just south of the centre is the hill of Kamienna Góra and, at its foot, the Bulwar Nadmorski. This seafront promenade is one of our favourite places in Gdynia: we walked it several times during the week and it was always different depending on the time.
Staying here means having the beach and the promenade at your door, and the centre about 10-20 minutes away on foot. Kamienna Góra is also an elegant residential area, with villas and the viewpoint from which you see the whole city. We went up more than once because the views change a lot with the light.
- Pros: the sea a step away, a quiet area at night and close to the centre.
- Cons: there are slopes and fewer restaurants than in the centre.
Hotel Nadmorski (mid-range)
⭐ 8.8/10 on Booking · 2,800+ reviews
A four-star on the coast, with views of the Bay of Gdańsk and its own spa. It is the one we recommend in our guide if you travel in summer and want the seafront promenade and the beach a step from the hotel.
Hotel Różany Gaj (mid-range)
⭐ 8.9/10 on Booking · 1,400+ reviews
It is in Kamienna Góra, close to the seaside promenade. It has an indoor pool, sauna and jacuzzi, something you really appreciate on the Baltic outside summer.
Hotel Dom Marynarza (budget)
⭐ 8.2/10 on Booking · 1,000+ reviews
The cheap option in the area: about 100 metres from the coast, 200 metres from the city beach and 1 km from Skwer Kościuszki. Some travellers comment that certain rooms are a little dated, so it is best to choose those in the renovated part, which also have sea views.
3. Orłowo: the quietest area of Gdynia
Orłowo is the prettiest neighbourhood for switching off. It has the cliff with views of the Baltic, trails for walking and a wooden pier smaller than the one in Sopot, but much quieter. For us, ideal for watching the sunset.
It is about 15 minutes from the centre by train (Gdynia Orłowo station) and very close to Sopot. It is perfect for a couples’ getaway or if you are looking for a hotel with a spa. That said: at night there is little on offer for going out to dinner.
- Pros: nature, silence, a more authentic beach and close to Sopot.
- Cons: you depend on the train to get to the centre and there are fewer restaurants.
Relais & Châteaux Hotel Quadrille (luxury, adults only)
⭐ 9.3/10 on Booking · 700+ reviews
The most exclusive hotel in Gdynia. It is part of the Relais & Châteaux association, is adults only and has a highly rated gourmet restaurant. A good choice for an anniversary or a special trip.
Hotel Willa Lubicz (mid-range)
⭐ 9.2/10 on Booking · 800+ reviews
It occupies a 1936 villa on Orłowska street, about 500 metres from the beach. It has a lot of charm, parking and that classic spa-town air that so characterises this part of the coast.
Hotel Kuracyjny Spa & Wellness (mid-range)
⭐ 8.7/10 on Booking · 1,500+ reviews
About a 9-minute walk from the Orłowo pier, in a very quiet residential area. It has its own spa and sauna, so it is perfect if you want to combine walks along the cliff with relaxation.
4. Redłowo: apartments near the quietest beach
Between the centre and Orłowo is Redłowo, a residential neighbourhood next to the Kępa Redłowska nature reserve. Its beach is the quietest in the city and the one many locals choose.
Here there are more apartments than hotels, so it is a good option if you travel as a family, stay several days or work remotely. In addition, the Experyment Science Centre is in this area, a sure plan if you travel with kids. Gdynia Redłowo station takes you to the centre in a few minutes.
- Pros: apartments with a kitchen, a beach without crowds and more moderate prices.
- Cons: it is a residential area with little nightlife.
To see all the options in the neighbourhood, the most practical thing is to filter the Redłowo accommodation by dates and type of apartment.

Sleep in Gdynia, Sopot or Gdańsk?
It is the big question for anyone visiting the Tri-City. At first we booked in Gdynia because it was a little cheaper than Gdańsk and easy to get to. After a week, we didn’t regret it at all.
- Gdynia: quieter, more modern and with better prices. An excellent base if you stay several days. All the info in the guide things to do in Gdynia.
- Gdańsk: the best option if your priority is the historic centre and you only have one or two nights. We tell you about it in things to do in Gdańsk.
- Sopot: the most touristy and expensive in summer, with the longest wooden pier in Europe. Check our guide to things to do in Sopot.
Since the three cities are linked by the SKM (you reach Sopot in about 15 minutes and Gdańsk in about 30), you can stay in Gdynia and visit the other two as day trips without a problem.
Tips before deciding where to stay in Gdynia
- Book early in summer. July and August are high season. In addition, Gdynia hosts the Open’er Festival, one of the biggest music festivals in Eastern Europe, and on those dates prices shoot up.
- June and September are the perfect balance between weather, prices and few crowds.
- Look at the distance to the SKM station. If you don’t stay in the centre, having a station nearby is worth more than any hotel extra.
- If you go by car, confirm the parking. In the centre it is not always free. If you plan to tour the coast on your own, you can compare car rental prices.
- Bring a coat even in summer. The Baltic wind cools things down quite a bit at night.
- Have internet from the moment you land to get around with maps and train timetables. With an eSIM you forget about roaming, and with Holafly you get a 5% discount.
How to get to your accommodation from Gdańsk airport
The nearest airport is Gdańsk Lech Wałęsa (GDN), about 25 km from Gdynia. You have three options:
- Train or bus: you reach the centre in 30-40 minutes. It is the cheapest option.
- Taxi or app: about 25 minutes, comfortable if you arrive late or with lots of luggage.
- Private transfer: they wait for you at arrivals and drop you at the hotel door. It is the most comfortable option if you arrive at night.
