If you want to know things to do in Bled, you’ve come to the right place: we spent 4 days staying by the lake at the beginning of July and explored it from end to end, so we’re telling you about it from our own experience. Bled is one of those destinations that leaves you speechless. The emerald-colored lake, the island with its small church in the center, the medieval castle perched on a 130-meter cliff… it’s exactly like the pictures, but much better in person. We arrived by rental car from Hallstatt (Austria), a trip of just over two hours that dropped us right in front of that postcard landscape. What an impact.

But be careful: Bled is not just the lake. There are gorges, waterfalls, medieval villages, adventure sports, hot air balloon flights at sunrise, and much more waiting for you just a few kilometers away. Stick with this guide and you won’t miss a thing.

Things to do in Bled Summary

1. Lake Bled: the heart of everything

Everything begins and ends at the lake. Lake Bled is the absolute star of the visit and one of the most photographed landscapes in all of Central Europe. Its waters have a color between light blue and emerald green that changes according to the daylight, and it is surrounded by forests and the peaks of the Julian Alps in the background.

We arrived early in the morning and the first thing we did was walk along the trail that surrounds the entire lake. It’s about a 6-kilometer easy walk, without difficulty, with different views in each section. You can also do it by bicycle: there are several rental companies in the town for about €10–€15 per day. If you can go before 9 AM, the light is spectacular and there are far fewer people.

In summer it’s also possible to swim in the lake. The water is about 20–22°C thanks to the thermal springs that feed it, and there are designated areas for it. In July we jumped into the water without hesitation.

TIP: On the main pier, on the town side, you’ll find a red wooden heart very famous on social media. Take your photo with the lake in the background, it’s worth it. During the Christmas season, they decorate it with lights and it looks beautiful.

2. Bled Island: the only natural island in Slovenia

Bled Island is the symbol of the lake and one of the most iconic things to do in Bled. It is the only natural island in all of Slovenia, and in its center rises the Church of the Assumption of Mary, in Baroque style, with its bell tower visible from any point on the lake.

To get there, there are two options: hop on a pletna—the traditional wooden boat propelled by a rower in the Venetian style—or rent a rowboat on your own. We went by pletna in the afternoon and the experience was lovely. The price of the pletna is around €15–€18 per person (round trip with visit time included). If you prefer to row yourselves, renting a boat costs around €15 per hour.

Once on the island, you have to climb 99 stone steps up to the church. Legend has it that if you ring the tower bell while making a wish, that wish comes true. Admission to the church costs around €6–€12 per person. And if you’re in the mood for something more adventurous, you can swim to the island: the water is warm in July and the distance from the shore is about 200 meters.

3. Bled Castle: the best views of the lake

Bled Castle is the second most visited attraction in Slovenia, after the Postojna Caves. It rises above a 130-meter cliff and records of its existence date back to the year 1011, making it the oldest inhabited castle in the country.

From above, the views are absolutely stunning. The entire lake unfolds below you with the island in the middle and the Alps in the background. We hiked up from the town (15 to 20 minutes with some slope) and had lunch at the castle restaurant, which has a terrace with a unique panorama. If you eat there, parking is free. The entrance fee is around €15–€18 per person; we recommend buying it online.

Inside the grounds you can visit the Gothic chapel, the medieval printing press (where you can make hand-made manuscript replicas), and the courtyards with viewpoints. There is also a wine cellar where you can taste Slovenian wines.

4. Hot air balloon flight: the best of all

If we had to choose one single thing from our entire time in Bled… the hot air balloon flight wins without discussion. It was the most impressive experience of the trip and one of the most memorable of all our years traveling.

The balloon leaves at sunrise, around 6:00 AM. We did it with 3Glav Adventures Bled. The balloon rises gently over the lake with the Julian Alps illuminated by the first light of the day, the castle below, the island in the middle of the water… Seeing that landscape from 300 or 400 meters high, in absolute silence, is something you never forget. We were very surprised floating among clouds…

The flight lasts about an hour, but the full experience—transfer, balloon inflation, flight, champagne toast, and the famous Bled cake at the end—takes about 3 to 4 hours. The current price is around €275–€300 per person. It’s expensive, we know. But if you can, do it without thinking twice.

TIP: Book well in advance, especially in July and August. Spots are very limited and the flight depends on the weather: it must be optimal, if the day isn’t right, it’s rescheduled for another (it’s for safety, it happened to us that one day we couldn’t go out and we were able to fly the next day). We were lucky the next day, with a clear sky and it was magical.

5. Vintgar Gorge: emerald water between rock walls

Vintgar Gorge (Blejski Vintgar) is only 4 kilometers from the town and is one of the places we liked most in the entire area. It is a 1,600-meter-long gorge carved by the Radovna River, with rock walls up to 100 meters high and water of a turquoise color that seems out of a fairytale.

The route is done on wooden walkways and bridges built along the river, in one direction. At the end is the 13-meter Šum waterfall. To return to the starting point there are two alternative trails (red and green, 4 to 6 km). We went very early and it was an excellent decision: few people, light through the trees, the sound of the water. From 10:30 AM onwards, buses with groups arrive and the experience changes quite a bit.

Entrance costs €10–€15 per person depending on the season. Important: from 2025 tickets are purchased exclusively online with a fixed time slot. Do it at least a week in advance in July and August.

6. Lake Bohinj: bigger, wilder, just as beautiful

30 kilometers from Bled, Lake Bohinj is the largest lake in Slovenia and a must if you have more than one day in the area. It is less touristy, quieter, wilder… and for that very reason, we loved it. The waters are just as crystal clear but the atmosphere is completely different: no island or castle, surrounded by the mountains of Triglav National Park.

There are designated swimming areas along the shore, and in summer it’s full of families and backpackers jumping into the water. You can also rent kayaks or canoes to explore it from the water. We spent the afternoon there after visiting the Savica Waterfall and it was the perfect finale: lake, mountain, sun, and a picnic by the water.

If you’re in the mood for altitude, go up on the Vogel cable car from Ukanc (at the end of the lake) to 1,535 meters, with panoramic views of the Alps that take your breath away. The round trip ticket is around €24.

7. Savica Waterfall: 78 meters among pines

Savica Waterfall (Slap Savica) is close to Lake Bohinj and is perfect to combine on the same day. The waterfall falls in two jumps from 78 meters high, drawing an “A” shape between the rock walls and forming an emerald-colored pool.

To get there you have to climb about 500 steps along a very well-conditioned wooded path. It’s between 20 and 30 minutes of quiet uphill, with benches to rest. Admission costs around €4 per person. We visited it the same day as the hot air balloon, with energy at a thousand: it was a perfect combination.

8. Ojstrica and Mala Osojnica viewpoint: the iconic photo

If you see any photo of Lake Bled from above with the full lake, the island, and the castle in the background… it was probably taken from Ojstrica or its neighbor Mala Osojnica. They are the two most sought-after natural viewpoints in Bled.

From the town the hike takes between 20 and 30 minutes on a trail with some slope through the forest. It’s not difficult but you have to go with comfortable footwear. The view from above is superb: the entire lake at your feet with the island perfectly centered. Entrance is free. Many travelers recommend getting up early to arrive at sunrise and find the place empty.

9. Straza Hill: adrenaline with views of the lake

Straza Hill is the hill you see from the lake, right in front of the castle, and it hides one of the most original activities in Bled: the alpine slide. It is a cart on rails that goes down from the top of the hill at about 40 km/h with the lake in the background. It’s great fun and the view during the descent is spectacular.

To get to the hill there is a chairlift available in summer. In winter, the slope becomes a ski slope and you can skate when the lake freezes (something that happens in the coldest winters). The price of the slide is around €10–€12 per person depending on the season; you can buy it on the spot. It’s a good option if you are traveling with children or simply want something different from the classic circuit.

10. Vila Bled: Tito’s residence

One of the most unique places to see in Bled and that very few people talk about: Vila Bled. It is the former summer residence of Marshal Josip Broz Tito, the historic Yugoslav leader who chose this enclave to rest and receive foreign dignitaries such as Queen Elizabeth II and Indira Gandhi.

Today the building functions as a luxury hotel with access to the private lake. If you are not staying there, many travelers recommend at least walking around its surroundings during the tour along the south shore of the lake, from where you can see the facade. It’s a natural stop point if you do the full circuit walking.

11. Kremna rezina: the Bled cake

You can’t leave Bled without trying the kremna rezina (or “kremšnita”), the creamy cake that was invented here in 1953 when the chef of Hotel Park created it for guests. Since then it became the most emblematic sweet in Slovenia.

It’s a two-layer puff pastry cake: below a custard-style vanilla cream, above whipped cream, and powdered sugar on top. Simple, creamy, and delicious. At Café Belvedere – Vila Bled, on the shore of the lake, they serve it with coffee and it’s said to be where it was originally created. You can also find it at the castle restaurant and on almost any terrace in town. Another place where we ate it was at Kavarna Park, also with views of the lake.

TIP: Although kremšnita appears in other parts of Slovenia, the Bled version has a specific and protected recipe. The one you try in town is the original. Try it in more than one place, the excuse always exists.

12. Pokljuka Forest and Krnica Gorge

About 15 kilometers from Bled, Pokljuka Forest is an alpine plateau covered by a mantle of pines that in winter becomes one of the main cross-country skiing and biathlon centers of the country (World Cup events are held here). In summer it is a fantastic place for quiet hiking among firs and total silence.

Very close, Krnica Gorge offers a walk between rock walls much less crowded than Vintgar. It’s ideal if you’ve already done Vintgar and want something quieter and more authentic. Many travelers recommend combining both on the same trip from Bled.

13. Radovljica: the medieval village 10 minutes away

Only 10 kilometers from Bled, Radovljica is one of the best-kept secrets in the area. Its medieval historic center is perfectly preserved, with a beautiful central square surrounded by painted houses from the 16th and 17th centuries that contrast with the green of the Alps in the background.

Many travelers recommend visiting the Beekeeping Museum (Slovenia has a very strong beekeeping tradition) and exploring the cobblestone alleys in calm. It’s a perfect half-day stop for the day you do Vintgar Gorge, as it’s very close. Entrance to the historic center is free.

14. Triglav National Park: alpine nature without limits

Bled is on the edge of Triglav National Park, the only national park in Slovenia and one of the oldest in Europe. It occupies 4% of the country’s territory and has Mount Triglav at its heart, the highest peak in Slovenia and national symbol (it appears on the flag and on the 50-cent coin).

From Bled you can enter the park and do hiking routes of different difficulties. If you have a car, the Vršič Pass road is one of the most spectacular in the Alps, with views that take your breath away. The park also includes Lake Bohinj, Savica Waterfall, and Vintgar Gorge.

15. Sports and adventure at the lake

Bled is much more than quiet walks. There are a number of adventure activities that you can do both on the lake and in the rivers and mountains in the surroundings. Some options:

• Kayaking and canoeing on Lake Bohinj or the Radovna River
• Rafting on the Soča River, one of the most spectacular rivers in the Alps (departure from Bovec, about 90 km away)
• Paragliding from the slope of Vogel with views of Lake Bohinj
• Canyoning in the surrounding canyons
• Mountain biking along the paths of the National Park
• Hiking of different levels, from family routes to ascents to Triglav

16. Swimming and rowing in the lake

One of the best things to do in Bled is to get in the water. There are several swimming areas designated around the lake, the busiest being Grajsko Kopališče (the castle bath), with a solarium, showers, and a bar. There are also quieter areas on the north and south shore. In July the water is fresh but fine, between 20 and 22°C.

If you want to row, you can rent boats at various points on the lake for about €15 per hour. It allows you to approach the island on your own and see the castle from the water. A very quiet and photogenic experience.

17. Excursion to Ljubljana: the capital 55 km away

If you have extra days, Ljubljana is only 55–60 kilometers from Bled (less than an hour by car or about 70 minutes by bus). The Slovenian capital is a very beautiful city, compact and easy to walk around, with its own castle, canals with bars and restaurants, and a very pleasant atmosphere.

We dedicated a full day to it, with morning, afternoon, and dinner there. Ljubljana Castle, the historic center, the central market, and the bridges in the center provide several very entertaining hours. If you can, stay until night: the city has another life when the lights turn on.

18. Postojna Caves and Predjama Castle

About 90 kilometers from Bled (approximately an hour by car), the Postojna Caves are the biggest tourist attraction in Slovenia. A 24-kilometer cave system with stalactites, stalagmites, underground rivers, and the famous human fish (Proteus anguinus). Visits last about 1.5 hours and include a section on an underground train. Tickets are purchased online in advance.

Only 10 minutes from the caves is the spectacular Predjama Castle, built literally inside a cave on the side of a 123-meter cliff. One of the most unique castles in the world. We stopped to see it on the way, already at night, and the impact was total.

Best time to visit Bled

Bled is a four-season destination, each with its own charm. This is what you can expect depending on when you go:

We recommend June or early September as the sweet spot: the lake is still swimmable, there is less crowding than in August, and prices start to fall.

Budget to visit Bled: how much does it cost?

Bled is the most touristy destination in Slovenia and prices reflect that. Still, with a little planning you can handle it well. Here is an indicative summary:

1-day itinerary in Bled

Bled in one day: the essentials

Arrive early (7–8 AM) and walk along the lake shore. Go up to the Castle before noon for the views. In the afternoon, take the pletna to Bled Island and ring the bell. Close the day with a kremšnita and a local beer by the lake. With this you have a complete and memorable day.

Bled in 2 days

Day 1: lake, island, castle, kremšnita. Day 2: Vintgar Gorge very early + relaxed afternoon at Lake Bohinj with swimming and visit to Savica Waterfall. If you have energy, go up on the Vogel cable car.

Bled in 3 or 4 days

With more time incorporate the hot air balloon flight (book well in advance), a day in Ljubljana, the excursion to Postojna Caves with Predjama Castle, and some adventure activity (kayaking, Straza slide, or hiking in Triglav). We spent 4 days and it was the ideal amount.

Where to stay in Bled

Bled has options for different budgets, although prices are higher than in other parts of Slovenia.

Book well in advance if you are traveling in July or August. The best places fill up fast and prices rise quite a bit as the date approaches.

We stayed for 4 days in an apartment facing the lake, at Čarman Guest House and it was an incredible experience: waking up to that view every morning is priceless. We recommend you look for accommodation with views of the lake or in the center of the town to move everywhere on foot.

How to get to Bled

Bled is in northwestern Slovenia, about 55 km from Ljubljana and about 235 km from Hallstatt (Austria), from where we arrived.

By rental car

It is the most comfortable option and the one we recommend most if you want to explore the surroundings (Bohinj, Vintgar, Savica). From Ljubljana it is 35–40 minutes.

To drive on Slovenian highways you need to buy a vignette (a toll sticker): it costs €15 for one week or €30 for one month. It is bought at gas stations, borders, or on the official website. Without it, fines are high.

By bus

From the Ljubljana bus station, buses leave every hour for Bled. The journey takes approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes and the ticket costs around €6–€8. The stop in Bled is about a 10-minute walk from the lake. It is the most recommended option if you arrive from the capital.

By train

There are two stations in Bled: Lesce-Bled (4 km from the town) and Bled Jezero (1.5 km from the center). The train is slower and less frequent than the bus, so it is generally not the first choice.

Where to park in Bled

Parking in Bled is one of the main headaches in high season, especially in July and August. All parking lots are paid, including natural ones. Some tips:

• Arrive before 9 AM to find a spot without problems.
• The castle parking (Blejski Grad 1) costs around €3–€4 / hour but is the most central.
• There are cheaper parking lots a bit further from the lake (€1–€2/hour) from where you can walk in 10 minutes.
• If you stay in a hotel in the center, many offer free or discounted parking.
• Never park on roadsides or non-designated areas: fines are high and they’ll ticket you fast.

What to eat in Bled

Slovenian cuisine is more varied and tasty than many imagine. In Bled you have options for all budgets:

• Kremšnita: the Bled cream cake, mandatory.
• Kranjska klobasa: the typical Carniolan sausage, with mustard and bread.
• Štruklji: dough rolls filled with cottage cheese or walnuts, served hot.
• Golaž: Slovenian-style meat stew.
• Pršut: cured ham from the Karst, similar to Italian prosciutto.
