What makes Cofete beach so special?

Cofete beach is, without exaggeration, one of the most impressive beaches in all of Spain. It stretches for over 12 kilometers of fine, dark sand at the foot of the Jandía massif, with the mountains practically falling into the sea and not a building in sight. It is a pure, wild, untamed landscape.

What makes it unique compared to other beaches in Fuerteventura is precisely that: the distance and difficulty of access, which keeps it away from mass tourism. There are no beach bars, no rental umbrellas, no sunbeds. Just sand, wind, waves, and mountains. For those looking for nature in its purest state, it is paradise.

Furthermore, Cofete is part of the Jandía Natural Park, which guarantees its protection and explains why the environment remains intact after decades of tourism on the island.

Where is Cofete beach located?

Cofete Beach is a virgin beach located in the Jandía Natural Park, in the southwestern part of Fuerteventura.
Cofete is an extensive golden sand beach surrounded by imposing mountains and cliffs that create a dreamlike landscape. To reach it, you must take an unpaved road that crosses the natural park. It is a somewhat complicated path, but worth the journey if you want to enjoy the island’s natural beauty. The scenery you can observe during the drive is simply spectacular: mountains, cliffs, virgin beaches, and the Atlantic Ocean.

How to get to Cofete beach: the famous dirt road

Here comes what generates the most questions: access to Cofete beach in Fuerteventura is via a dirt, unpaved road of approximately 20 km starting from Morro Jable. These roads are gravel and generally passable by a normal car, but you must drive with great caution and at a reduced speed.

During our visit to Cofete at the beginning of 2026, we saw firsthand that the access road is in better condition than in previous years, although it is also much more crowded. Even so, it remains a demanding dirt road, so it is essential to drive slowly and with great caution. It is not a destination to rush to, but rather one to enjoy the journey and the surroundings from the very first moment. However, this can change from week to week due to traffic, and it must be said, even if it sounds strange, the rains (2026 is being atypical in terms of ‘bad weather’ on the island).

Do you need a 4×4 to get to Cofete?

A 4×4 vehicle is not mandatory, but it is highly recommended, or a high-clearance car, if the roads are in poor condition after rain.

Under normal, dry conditions, a standard car can arrive without problems if driven carefully and slowly (We always went in our Fiat Panda). That said, an SUV, high-clearance car, or 4×4 provides much more peace of mind because the terrain has sections with stones and bumps.

Important: check your rental contract before entering this gravel road area (passing the port of Morro Jable). Many car rental companies expressly prohibit the use of vehicles on dirt roads, and if you have an accident there, the insurance will not cover the damage. It is something we learned over time and is worth keeping in mind.

Things to do in Cofete

Cofete Beach

Cofete beach is an ideal place to relax and enjoy the tranquility. The water is crystal clear and the sand is fine and golden, making it a perfect place for a swim and sunbathing. Be careful when swimming as there are usually strong currents/waves and depth.

Because it is a virgin beach, there are no beach bars or restaurants, so it is advisable to bring everything you need for the day.

In the village of Cofete there is a single bar/restaurant (Restaurante Cofete Pepe El Faro).

In addition to enjoying the beach, you can also go on some hiking trails in the surrounding area.

Can you swim at Cofete beach?

This is one of the most important questions, and the answer must be given honestly: Cofete is not a beach for relaxing swimming. The surf is strong, the currents can be dangerous, and there is no lifeguard service. Many days the waves are not suitable for anyone who is not an experienced surfer.

This does not mean that you can never get in the water, but you have to read the day’s conditions well. On days with relatively calm seas and if you know how to swim well, you can take a dip or get wet at the shore. However, Cofete beach in Fuerteventura is better enjoyed by walking, contemplating the landscape, and sunbathing rather than as a swimming destination.

Surfers, on the other hand, love it: the waves are powerful and the wild environment adds to the appeal.

Roque Del Moro Beach

Roque del Moro Beach is one of the first natural gems discovered when taking the first turn-off after the viewpoint, before reaching the village. This wild corner stands out for its imposing volcanic rock that emerges facing the sea and for its calm atmosphere, away from the more crowded areas. Surrounded by arid and spectacular landscapes, it is an ideal place for those looking to enjoy nature in its purest state and contemplate the power of the Atlantic Ocean.

The village of Cofete: “Casa Winter” the mystery of the Jandía massif

From the beach, you will see Villa Winter on the mountain, a mansion built in the 1940s by the German engineer Gustav Winter. The building, isolated in the middle of nowhere, generated all kinds of legends and conspiracy theories for decades about its alleged link to the Nazi regime.

The environment and the history surrounding the place give it an air between mysterious and cinematic that fits perfectly with the landscape of Cofete. You can get there by car or walking from the beach (it is not very close).

Today the villa is private property, they charge an entrance ticket but it is not essential (it is rumored that there are military things, but they were brought later), it is not very well maintained, but it might be worth approaching to see it from the outside.

The Cofete islet

The Cofete Islet is a small rocky formation located in front of the wild coast of Cofete, which stands out for its isolation and natural beauty. Surrounded by the intense swell of the Atlantic, this islet integrates perfectly into the virgin landscape of the Jandía Natural Park, offering an impressive picture where the sea, the sand, and the mountains create a unique and almost intact environment. It is an ideal place to contemplate the power of nature and enjoy one of the most authentic corners of Fuerteventura.

Practical tips before going to Cofete beach

  • Bring water and food: There are no services on the beach. The only place where you can get something is at the only bar/restaurant in the village, and it is not always open.
  • High sun protection: The wind can be deceiving and you don’t feel that the sun is hitting hard, but in Fuerteventura, the radiation is intense all year round.
  • Arrive early: The gravel/dirt road can become quite crowded at midday in high season. If you arrive before 10am, you will enjoy the beach almost all to yourself.
  • Watch out for the wind: Cofete is one of the windiest beaches on the island. On days with strong wind, the sand flies and it can be quite uncomfortable.
  • No cell signal: Once on the dirt road, coverage practically disappears. Download the offline map just in case before leaving Morro Jable.
  • Respect the environment: We are in a natural park. Do not leave trash, do not make fires, and respect the local flora.

Cofete beach on the map: where it is exactly

Cofete beach is located at the southwestern end of Fuerteventura, on the Jandía peninsula. It is on the Atlantic side (west face), unlike the famous Sotavento Beach which is on the east side.

The closest reference point is Morro Jable, from where it takes about 30-45 minutes by car via the dirt road. If you are coming from the north of the island, for example from Corralejo, allow at least 1h45 just for the road/highway to Morro Jable, then the time for the gravel path to Cofete (allow at least 1hr).
