Introduction to the Cofete Viewpoint: The wild jewel of southern Fuerteventura

The Cofete Viewpoint / Mirador de Cofete – Fuerteventura is, without exaggeration, one of those places that leaves you speechless even if you already live on the island, and we say this as people who chose Fuerteventura as our home over four years ago. Every time we head up to this strategic point on the Jandía Peninsula, we feel that mix of emotion, silence, and freedom that only truly wild landscapes can generate.

This lookout point is located at an altitude of about 700 meters, which allows for an immense view towards the Playa de Cofete / Cofete Beach and the mountains that dominate the south of the island. From here, the landscape looks like it’s from another planet: ancient dunes, giant cliffs, clouds resting on the peaks, and an Atlantic Ocean that vanishes into the horizon.

In this guide, we tell you EVERYTHING, absolutely everything, so you can enjoy this corner like the locals: how to get there, when to go, what to see, and how to make the most of one of the most stunning viewpoints in the Canary Islands.

History and essence of the Cofete Viewpoint

Volcanic origin and landscape formation

The Jandía Peninsula is one of the oldest territories in Fuerteventura. Its volcanic origin shaped the mountains, deep ravines, and slopes that we see today from the lookout. The rock textures, full of folds and reddish hues, are the result of thousands of years of erosion by wind and sea.

Cofete and its bond with rural Majorero life

The small houses that can be seen from the Mirador de Cofete / Cofete Viewpoint form one of the most isolated settlements on the island. For centuries, its inhabitants lived virtually disconnected from the rest of Fuerteventura. Today, it is a symbol of Majorero strength and identity, and visiting the lookout helps one understand that history of struggle in an extreme environment.

Cofete Viewpoint – Fuerteventura: What the real experience from the top is like

Views towards the Playa de Cofete

From above, you can see the nearly 14 km of wild beach stretching out like a golden cloak. It is one of the most impressive images in the entire archipelago.

Pico de la Zarza and the mountain range

Pico de la Zarza, at 807 meters, is the highest mountain on the island and seems to guard the beach from above. On clear days, the view is simply perfect.

Strong wind: part of the charm

If you come, be prepared: the wind here isn’t just a detail, it’s a protagonist. It blows hard, but it is also what keeps this area so wild and well-preserved.

Taking the best photos at the viewpoint: If you are a photography lover, this place is a paradise. To get spectacular photos at the Cofete Viewpoint, we recommend going at sunset, when the golden light bathes the mountains. Don’t forget to have your camera/mobile battery charged, because you won’t be able to stop shooting. If the weather is on your side, it’s a wonder how it looks from above.

How to get to the Cofete Viewpoint step-by-step

From Morro Jable via the dirt road

The Mirador de Cofete is located on the road connecting Morro Jable with Cofete. To reach the Mirador de Cofete, you must take the FV-2 road until before reaching the port of Morro Jable. There, you must turn off, and then a dirt track begins for several kilometers; then you have to turn right at the sign indicating Cofete to arrive at the viewpoint.

If you are driving, you can reach the parking area located right next to the viewpoint (although there isn’t much space), or there is another space slightly before arriving. From there, you will have to walk up a small hill to reach the viewpoint and the impressive views.

Access is via an unpaved road that starts in Morro Jable. It’s not difficult, but it requires a calm approach. The road has curves, loose stones, and narrower sections. The dirt road is not always in the best condition, especially beyond the viewpoint.

Tips for driving on unpaved roads

  • Maintain a low and steady speed.
  • Avoid braking sharply.
  • If you are not used to it, it is better to rent an SUV or a high-clearance vehicle.

Arriving on the island and first steps: Keep in mind that there are no flights to Cofete directly, as it is a pristine area. You will need to fly to Fuerteventura Airport (FUE) and, from there, rent a car or take transport to the south. It is the first step to discovering the magic of Cofete Fuerteventura.

Is there a Cofete Lighthouse?

Many travelers ask us about the Cofete lighthouse. In reality, there is NO lighthouse in Cofete. They are likely referring to the Punta Jandía Lighthouse, which is at the southern tip of the peninsula, a few kilometers from here. But it is accessible via another route, not the one to the viewpoint (let’s say you continue on the same route to the south, before turning toward the viewpoint or Cofete). It is a perfect visit to combine on the same day and complete your route through the wild south of the island.
