Thoddoo is the agricultural island of the Maldives. While the rest of the archipelago lives off tourism and fishing, watermelons, papayas, passion fruit, and vegetables are grown here and later shipped by boat to Malé. That mix of green plantations, sandy paths between palm trees, and an impressive turquoise beach makes it different from all the other islands we visited. And we visited ten. Almost everything to see in Thoddoo is free and can be explored on foot or by bicycle, which is not very common in the Maldives.

1. Bikini Beach, the essential beach to visit in Thoddoo

If we had to summarize the best things to do in Thoddoo in a single image, it would be this. The western bikini beach is, without exaggeration, one of the most beautiful beaches we saw in the Maldives. It is long, wide, with fine white sand and a lagoon that ranges from light turquoise to deep blue. It is separated from the village by a path that crosses the plantations, so you arrive by walking or cycling among palm trees and papayas until the beautiful sea suddenly appears.

It has natural shade from palm trees, hammocks, and sun loungers provided by the guesthouses in the main area. Entering the water is very smooth and rock-free, ideal if you are traveling with children or just want to float without thinking about anything. We went almost every day after breakfast and stayed until sunset. By walking a bit, you can find a quieter spot with fewer people.

Keep in mind: the limit of the bikini beach is marked with a fence made of dried palm leaves. Outside that sector, Thoddoo is a Muslim island and you must be dressed modestly. It is respected and that’s it, it’s no trouble at all.

2. Sunrise Beach, the quiet beach in the northeast

The second authorized beach is on the other side of the island; it is smaller and much quieter. It doesn’t have the spectacular postcard view of the western one, but it has something we really liked: we were almost always alone. If the western one has ten people, this one has two.

It is perfect for going early in the morning when the sun rises from that side and the water is like a mirror. We used to bring our mate and stay for a while before the heat set in. It is about ten minutes by bike from the center of the village.

3. Thoddoo Snorkeling Point, the best thing to see in Thoddoo underwater

This is, for us, the big reason why Thoddoo stands out from the rest. Turtles live in the reef surrounding the island, and you can see them practically every day without needing to pay for any excursion: you just walk in from the beach.

The most reliable spot is at the end of the western bikini beach, where the lagoon ends and the reef begins. We saw turtles almost daily. A couple of times there were three at the same time, calmly eating sea grass while we floated above without moving.

TIPS: bring your own goggles and snorkel if you can. The ones rented on the island are worn out and fog up. And never touch or chase the turtles: if they feel harassed, they leave, and you ruin the moment for everyone. The B-side: Do not step on or stand on the corals. It is very sad to see huge amounts of people stepping on the corals and chasing the turtles.

4. The house reef: snorkeling from the shore without spending on excursions

In addition to the turtle spot, the Thoddoo reef has stretches with live coral and many colorful fish just a few meters from the shore. Parrotfish, clownfish, schools of surgeonfish, and moray eels hiding among the rocks. It is one of those free things that are worth more than any paid excursion.

Watch out for the current: on the outer edge of the reef, the water can pull outwards, especially at low tide. We always went in with the rising tide and never had any problems, but it is something to ask your accommodation about every day.

5. The watermelon plantations, the island’s trademark

Thoddoo produces the most famous watermelons in the Maldives, and there are more than two hundred farms working on an island of barely two square kilometers. Exploring the dirt roads between greenhouses and crops is one of the things to do in Thoddoo that no one tells you about, and we loved it.

The peak watermelon season coincides with Ramadan when the entire island harvests and dispatches entire boats to Malé. Outside of that season, you will still see papaya, banana, passion fruit, pumpkin, and even chili growing. Several farmers will let you take a look if you ask with a smile, and some guesthouses organize short guided tours.

There are also papaya plantations and other delicious tropical fruits.

6. Exploring Thoddoo by bicycle

Thoddoo is large by Maldivian standards, so a bike is the best way to get around. Many accommodations lend them for free; if not, they rent for about 5 to 10 dollars a day. We used ours every day, and it was the best expense of the trip.

The complete circuit along the outer paths takes about an hour if you stop to take photos, and it leaves you close to almost everything to see in Thoddoo without depending on anyone. There are stretches of asphalt and others of compacted sand, all among palm trees; near the bikini beaches, the sand can be looser, making it harder to ride, so you might have to get off. Late in the afternoon, with the light low and people returning from the fields, it is one of the most beautiful things about the island.

7. The ruins of the Buddhist temple, the most historical thing to see in Thoddoo

Before the 12th century, the Maldives was Buddhist, and Thoddoo was one of the important centers of that era. Remains of a stupa, a statue of Buddha, and even a Roman coin from 90 BC were found on the island, which is now exhibited in the National Museum of Malé.

Let’s be honest: the archaeological site is poorly marked, and what you see is a mound with some remains, not a restored temple. But knowing you are standing on that, in the middle of a papaya field, changes the meaning of the walk. Ask at your accommodation for the exact location because there are no clear signs.

8. Thoddoo port at sunset

The port is on the eastern side and is the practical heart of the island: that’s where ferries arrive, excursion boats depart, and crates of fruit are loaded. In the afternoon, it fills with people chatting, children playing, and fishermen cleaning the day’s catch.

We liked going a couple of times without a plan, sitting on the pier, and watching. It is where you see the real life of the island best, far from the tourist sector. If they offer to sell you fresh fish and you have a kitchen in your accommodation, take advantage of it.

9. The village and the mosque: one of the must-sees of Thoddoo

The village of Thoddoo has about 1,800 people, neat white sand streets, low-rise colorful houses, and total calm. There are two mosques, a school, a small hospital, a soccer field, and several shops.

Walking through it in the morning or after five in the afternoon is a plan in itself. People greet you, kids ask where you are from, and no one is trying to sell you anything. You cannot enter the mosque if you are not Muslim, but it looks perfect from the outside, and the call to prayer marks the rhythm of the day.

10. Bioluminescent plankton on the east beach

With luck and a new moon, you can see bioluminescent plankton on the east coast: little blue dots that light up in the surf when you step on the wet sand. We saw it one night out of the eight, and it was one of those things you never forget.

It is not a guaranteed spectacle, so don’t plan your trip around this. It depends on the season, the current, and total darkness. Go after 8:00 PM, without a flashlight, and give your eyes a few minutes to adjust.

11. The sunset from the bikini beach, a classic thing to see in Thoddoo

The western beach faces the open Indian Ocean directly, so the sun sinks into the horizon with nothing in between. It is the best sunset on the island and one of the best we saw in the whole country.

At the beach entrance, there is a small stand selling fresh fruit and coconuts. We used to buy a coconut, cut on the spot, and drink it there, sitting and watching the colors of the sky change. It sounds like a cliché, but it is exactly that good.

12. An excursion to a sandbank

Almost all guesthouses offer half-day trips to a nearby sandbank: a tongue of white sand in the middle of the sea with nothing around it. If you have never done one, it is the classic Maldives image you have in your head, brought to life.

We took an excursion to a sandbank in Dhiffushi and remember it as one of the best days of the trip. Bring plenty of sunscreen, a hat, and water: there is not a single bit of shade.

13. Snorkeling with manta rays and a trip to Rasdhoo

Thoddoo is a short boat ride from Rasdhoo and the North Ari atoll, one of the best diving areas in the Maldives. From here, you can book snorkeling trips with manta rays, nurse sharks, and, in season, whale sharks.

Prices range from 40 to 70 dollars per person depending on the excursion. They are booked at guesthouses or island dive centers, and it is best to book one day in advance because groups fill up quickly. If you have time left, many travelers recommend combining the day with a stop in Rasdhoo to get to know another local island.

14. The palm-lined interior paths

One of the things that surprised us most was how green Thoddoo is. The interior paths are lined with towering palm trees and crops, with that filtered light you won’t see on the smaller, barren islands of the country.

Go for a bike ride aimlessly between 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM. You will run into people working on the farms, carts loaded with fruit, and the occasional cat sleeping in the shade. It is free, it is not on any list of attractions, and it is very nice to tour the islands by bike without rushing.

15. Eating freshly picked fruit and trying Maldivian food

Something very simple: eating. Thoddoo fruit is picked on the same day, and the difference compared to what you buy anywhere else is huge. Watermelon, pineapple, papaya, passion fruit, small and sweet bananas, accompanied by a coconut, ideal!!!

The fruit was an unmissable part of the day; for example, pineapple freshly cut and off to the beach!

16. Diving in the North Ari Atoll

Thoddoo has a couple of dive centers on the island and is a stone’s throw from some of the best dive points in the Maldives. From here, trips are made to the Rasdhoo atoll and northern Ari, where you can see grey sharks, nurse sharks, turtles, and coral walls that drop steeply.

Baptisms cost around 100-130 dollars, and single dives for certified divers are between 60 and 90 dollars, depending on the point and whether you need to rent equipment. Complete Open Water courses are also available, much cheaper than in Europe. We didn’t dive, so we tell you this with data without embellishing it: it is one of the most highly valued activities by travelers staying on the island.

Keep in mind: if you are going to dive, check that your insurance covers recreational diving up to the depth you are going to. Many basic policies exclude it.

17. The star immersion: swimming with manta rays

One of the most sought-after things to do in Thoddoo is the trip to swim with manta rays. They are organized from the island by boat, last half a day, and are usually combined with two or three more snorkeling points plus a sandbank.

The prices we saw ranged from 40 to 70 dollars per person depending on how many points it includes. They are booked at the guesthouse or dive centers, and it is best to book one day in advance because the groups fill up quickly. The season with the most sightings goes from May to November, when the monsoon moves the plankton toward the eastern side of the atoll.

18. Swimming with whale sharks (long excursion)

The whale shark lives mainly in the south of the Ari atoll, so from Thoddoo the excursion is long: you leave very early and return late, with several hours of navigation. It costs between 120 and 180 dollars per person.

Our honest opinion: if your priority is the whale shark, it is better to stay directly in Dhigurah or Dhangethi, which are next to the sighting area. From Thoddoo it is possible, but you lose a whole day on a boat and the sighting is never guaranteed.

19. Kayaking, paddle surfing, and water sports in the lagoon

The lagoon of the western bikini beach is huge, shallow, and without a strong current, so it is ideal for paddling. Kayaks and paddleboards are rented on the beach for about 10-20 dollars an hour, and some accommodations lend them to their guests for free.

Going out to paddle early, with the water still flat, is one of our favorite things: you can see rays and fish from the board without needing to put your head in the water. If you go in the afternoon, keep in mind that a west wind usually picks up.

20. Sunset fishing with local fishermen

Sunset fishing is the cheapest excursion on the island, around 25-35 dollars per person, and one of the most beautiful: you go out on a dhoni with Thoddoo fishermen, cast the handline, and return with the sun setting over the sea.

The best part is what happens afterward: in several guesthouses, they cook what you caught for dinner, grilled with rice. If you don’t catch anything, that’s fine too; the trip itself is worth it. There is also daytime sports fishing, which is more expensive and aimed at those who go specifically for that.

Best time to travel to Thoddoo

Maldives has a tropical climate all year round, with temperatures between 27 and 31 degrees in any month. What changes is the monsoon, and that defines the experience quite a bit.

Where to stay in Thoddoo

Choosing the right accommodation changes the experience a lot because almost all things to do in Thoddoo are concentrated in two areas. There are quite a few guesthouses and small hotels, almost all family-run and concentrated in the village or near the path to the bikini beach. Prices start around 50-60 dollars a night with breakfast and go up to 120-150 in the newer ones with a pool.

Our advice: choose one that is less than ten minutes by bike from the western beach and includes bicycles. Also, ask if they organize the transfer from Malé, because it saves you a headache. In high season (December to February), it is advisable to book well in advance; the island is small and fills up.

Where to eat in Thoddoo

Eating is part of what to see in Thoddoo just as much as the beaches. It is not a gastronomic destination, but you eat well and cheaply if you know where. There are three different circuits and it is convenient to combine them.

• Village cafes: the cheapest, between 5 and 10 dollars per dish. Fish curry, fried rice, noodles, burgers. It is where people on the island eat and where the food is best.
• Guesthouse restaurants: more expensive (12 to 20 dollars) and with a menu designed for tourists. Comfortable, but repetitive if you stay for a week.
• Fruit stands and shops: for breakfast or snacks. Watermelon, papaya, coconuts cut on the spot, and bottled water.

Hedhikaa, those fritters and fried pastries that come out mid-afternoon, cost pennies and are addictive. We ate a lot of delicious fruit on the beach. We don’t give the names of the places because on local islands they open and close often or change names, but ask at your accommodation which one is operating and is a good bet.

TIPS: during Ramadan, many village cafes close during the day and only open at sunset. The guesthouses continue to serve guests normally, but it is worth keeping in mind if you travel during that time.

Of the local food, also don’t miss mas huni (grated coconut with tuna and onion) with roshi for breakfast, and some fish curry. We always prefer the ones in the village, cheaper and tastier.

How to get to Thoddoo from Malé

Before enjoying all the things to do in Thoddoo you have to get there, and the island is about 67 kilometers west of Malé, in the Alif Alif atoll (North Ari). There are three ways to do it and the price difference between them is huge.

Speedboat: the recommended option

It is what almost everyone uses and what we used. The usual departure times from Malé airport are around 10:30 and 16:00, and from Thoddoo to the airport around 06:45 and 13:00. Times may vary; it is booked through the accommodation, which generally also sends someone to pick you up at terminal D of the airport.

MTCC public ferry: the economical option

It costs about 4 to 6 dollars and takes between four and five hours. It leaves a few days a week and usually at night, so you arrive in the early morning. It is not booked online: you buy the ticket at the terminal and have to be there 30-45 minutes before. It is a genuine adventure, not a comfortable transfer, and we do not recommend it if you arrive tired from a long flight.

Seaplane

It exists, but it doesn’t make much sense for Thoddoo: there is no private platform, so they drop you off at a nearby resort and from there you continue by boat. It is booked several days in advance and only operates during daylight hours.

TIPS: if you get seasick on a boat, take something before boarding. The speedboat goes fast, and with rough seas, it bumps quite a bit, especially in the front seats. We learned to ask for a seat in the back and the difference is noticeable. Also, bring a light jacket: the air conditioning inside the cabin is polar.

Another point to coordinate in time: if your international flight lands at night, you won’t catch any departure and will have to sleep in Malé or Hulhumalé. We know ten local islands in the Maldives from two trips, so after telling you the best things to do in Thoddoo, the question we are asked most is which island to choose. Here is the honest comparison:

If we had to choose a single island for a first time and the focus is the beach, we would choose Thoddoo without hesitation. If the focus is the atmosphere and services, Dhiffushi. And if you want to put together a route of two or three islands, Thoddoo combines very well with Rasdhoo and Ukulhas, which are in the same atoll.

Practical tips for visiting Thoddoo

• Dress code: outside the bikini beaches, shoulders and knees must be covered. This also applies to the port and upon arrival by boat.
• Alcohol: prohibited on the entire island. It is not sold, nor can you bring it into the country. The only legal way is a trip to a boat or resort.
• Cash: there is an ATM, but it can run out of bills. Just in case, bring dollars from Malé. The bills have to be in good condition; torn ones are not accepted.
• Internet: accommodation wifi works well for basics. To arrive connected from the airport, an eSIM solves the process.
• Water: do not drink from the tap. Buy large containers in the shops; it is much cheaper than small bottles.
• Sunscreen: better bring some from your country. It is expensive on the island, and there is little variety. Use a reef-safe one; the reef is meters from the shore.
• Vaccines: there is no mandatory one to enter the Maldives if you come from Europe or America. What there is are mosquitoes at sunset among the plantations, so bring repellent: not because of dengue, which is infrequent, but because they bite a lot.
• Ramadan: if you travel during that time, cafe hours change and it is advisable to be discreet with food and drink in public during the day.
• Plugs: type D and G, the same as in the UK. Bring an adapter.
