One clarification before we start: Dhigurah is an inhabited local island in the Maldives, not a resort. This means local rules apply, the village has its own pace, and bikinis are restricted to the designated beach. We have been traveling for 9 years and have visited the Maldives twice, for a month each time, so we are sharing this from our experience and referencing the 10 islands we know.
Best time to travel and things to do in Dhigurah
Before deciding what to see in Dhigurah, it’s worth checking the calendar.
The dry season runs from November to May: less rain, calmer sea, and clearer water. Within that window, January to April provided us with the best underwater visibility (we visited at the end of January and the sea was calm and spectacular).
From June to September, the southwest monsoon hits: there is more plankton, visibility drops a little, but this increases the activity of the large animals that come to feed. The Maldives is not in a hurricane zone, so even in the wet season, rains are usually short and intermittent. What does change is the sea: with rough seas, transfers and excursions get canceled.
Whale sharks can be seen all twelve months of the year in South Ari, so the season doesn’t define that experience. It does, however, define how many days you will be able to go out sailing.
How many days to stay and how to split things to do in Dhigurah
To enjoy the things to do in Dhigurah without rushing, our advice is 5 nights minimum, and 7 if you can. The island is small but the weather dictates everything: if the day you booked the whale shark tour wakes up with rough seas, you need a margin to repeat. This is how we distributed our week:
- Day 1: arrival at noon, walk around the village, and first swim at the bikini beach.
- Day 2: whale shark and manta ray excursion (leaves early, returns at noon) and afternoon to rest.
- Day 3: walk or bike to the Thundi, with a picnic and return at sunset.
- Day 4: morning snorkeling from the shore and sandbank or dolphins in the afternoon.
- Day 5: diving, water sports, or a free catch-up day in case the weather ruined something earlier.
- Days 6 and 7: beach without a schedule, night fishing, and farewell on the east coast at sunrise.
1. Bikini Beach, the longest beach we saw in the Maldives
It is the first of the things to do in Dhigurah and the one we used the most: a strip of blinding white sand on the west coast, with transparent water and palm trees that provide real shade by mid-afternoon. The island is just over 3 km long and barely 300 meters wide, and the beach follows most of that path.
The best part isn’t the postcard view, it’s the space. You walk five minutes south and there’s no one around. In our case, we would head out early with our mate and stay until the sun got too strong, around eleven. There are hammocks and sun loungers for free use in several sections, and some accommodations, if you ask, will lend you an umbrella.
Keep in mind: the bikini beach is clearly marked. Outside of it, in the village and at the port, you must cover your shoulders and knees. This is not just a recommendation; it is the rule on most local islands in the Maldives and is respected without exception.
2. The Thundi, the sandbank at the southern tip
If there is one place on the island that we loved, it is this one. The Thundi is a natural sandbank at the southern tip of Dhigurah, where the water opens into three shades of turquoise and the sand stretches into the sea like a runway. It is the main reason we chose this island.
Best of all: you can walk there (it’s not very close), for free, without an excursion or set time.
The walk from the village takes between 40 and 60 minutes along a sandy path through dense vegetation, and every so often it opens up to pristine little beaches where you won’t bump into anyone. Bring water and a hat. We went twice: once mid-morning but with transport from the accommodation, and once for the sunset. Go with water, a hat, and footwear that can get wet.
The size of the sandbank changes with the tides and the time of year. If the tide is high, it can be almost covered, so check with your accommodation before leaving so you don’t make the walk and be unable to see the tip properly.
3. The jungle path towards the south of the island
The path to the Thundi deserves its own spot. Dhigurah has the village concentrated in the north and the rest is tropical vegetation, fruit plantations, and sand. There are no paved roads or cars: you walk, bike, or go in a golf cart or small transport if your accommodation has one.
We did it with hotel transport because it had rained (otherwise, a bike is an option, depending on the condition of the path). Most guesthouses have bikes, either included or for rent for about 5-10 USD per day. It was quite an experience and the best part of the week. The silence is total except for the birds. In the open sections, deserted beaches appear for a dip with no one around.
4. The island’s reef: snorkeling from the shore
One of the things to do in Dhigurah that costs the least and offers the most. The reef is just a few strokes from the beach and from there we saw green turtles, blacktip reef sharks (harmless, small ones), rays, and huge schools of fish.
There are several entry points in the southern part of the bikini beach; it’s recommended to go when the tide is coming in and the sun is high for good light. Bring your own gear if you can, because renting it on the island is around 10 USD per day and the quality varies quite a bit.
TIPS: do not touch or step on the coral, and watch out for the current in the southern channel, which can be strong when the tide changes.
5. The whale shark excursion, the great must-do of Dhigurah
Dhigurah is adjacent to the South Ari Marine Protected Area, the only place in the Maldives where the whale shark can be seen throughout the year. From here, the boat reaches the sighting area in 15 or 20 minutes, whereas from further islands the trip can take two or three hours.
The standard excursion lasts between 3 and 5 hours, is done with snorkeling (no need to dive), and is usually combined with looking for manta rays. The prices we saw on the island ranged from 60 to 120 USD per person depending on the operator and duration. We booked it directly at the accommodation the day before, which is usually cheaper than booking online.
No one can guarantee a sighting: it is a wild animal and is not fed to attract it, as happens in other destinations. If you have several days, leave the excursion for the first or second, so you have a margin to repeat if it doesn’t appear.

6. Manta Point and the manta ray ballet
The western lagoon of Dhigurah has spots where manta rays come to be cleaned at coral stations. Watching them glide a few meters away is one of those things you never forget. The best season is from December to April, when the water is clearer.
Many excursions combine whale shark and manta rays in the same outing, and that is the option we preferred most: same boat, same day, two animals. Ask if the tour includes both stops before paying, because not everyone does.

7. The village, one of the things to see in Dhigurah outside the beach
The village occupies the northern tip and is small: low-rise colorful houses, sand instead of sidewalks, the occasional store, local cafes, and kids playing soccer at sunset. It is one of the points of interest in Dhigurah that most people skip and that we ended up loving very much.
In local cafes (the famous “hotaa”), you can eat very cheaply: a plate of mas huni with roshi and milk tea for just a few dollars. It’s the best Maldivian breakfast we tried on the whole trip. Note that many close or change hours on Fridays, which is the holy day.
The Dhigurah hanging chairs are one of those simple but charming corners of the island. Located next to the beach, they allow you to sit and swing quietly while enjoying the breeze, the sound of the sea, and the views of the Indian Ocean. They are perfect for relaxing, reading for a while, or just taking some beautiful photos with the landscape in the background.
8. The port and the pier sunsets
The port is the practical heart of the island: that’s where speedboats arrive, provisions are unloaded, and fishermen gather at the end of the day. At sunset, the light turns orange over the moored dhonis and it is a perfect place to sit for a while.
We happened to chat with fishermen who were returning with the day’s catch and showed us everything with enormous patience. That, for us, is worth as much as any beach.
9. Fruit bats at dusk
Something you will definitely see in Dhigurah… At dusk, flying foxes (enormous, harmless fruit bats) emerge from the trees and cross the sky in silence. They are very easy to spot from the path heading south.
The first time we just stared upward, with the pink sky in the background. Go around 6 PM, which is when the movement starts.
10. The east coast, the sunrise, and the surf
Dhigurah is on the edge of the atoll: on the east coast, you can see waves breaking against the outer reef, while the west coast is a calm lagoon. That double side is very rare and means you can watch the sunrise on one side and the sunset on the other by walking 300 meters.
The east coast is not for swimming (there is coral and current), but it is the best site for the sunrise. We got up twice at 6 in the morning and didn’t regret it one bit.
11. An excursion to a sandbank in the middle of the ocean
Sandbanks are banks of sand that appear in the middle of the sea, without a single tree, surrounded by turquoise water. It is one of the most photogenic experiences in the Maldives, and half-day trips from Dhigurah cost about 30-50 USD per person depending on the group.
We did a sandbank excursion from Dhiffushi on our first trip, and the feeling of standing in the middle of nowhere, with water up to your ankles, compares to nothing else. Bring reef-safe sunscreen and plenty of water: there is no shade.
12. The dive sites of South Ari Atoll
Around the island, there are top-level dive sites like Kuda Rah Thila, Manta Point, or Reethi Thila. The island’s dive centers work very well and many offer the complete Open Water course, which is one of the things to do in Dhigurah if you have a full week.
A dive usually costs between 60 and 90 USD with equipment included, and multi-dive packs lower the price per trip significantly. The best visibility is from January to April; between June and September there is more plankton, sharpness drops, but large animal activity increases.
Generally, diving is done through the guesthouse where you are staying.
13. Go out to see dolphins at sunrise or sunset
In the Ari Atoll, there are bottlenose dolphins and spinner dolphins that move in groups of five to fifteen, and sometimes they gather by the dozens. The excursion lasts a couple of hours and is done early in the morning or near sunset.
It is the ideal outing if you are traveling with children or if the sea is too rough for snorkeling: you don’t get in the water and the probability of seeing them is high.
14. Night fishing with the locals
The Maldives was for centuries a nation of fishermen and this outing is the most honest way to understand that. You leave before sunset, the boat anchors near a reef, and they teach you how to use a hand line, without a rod. It lasts between an hour and a half and two hours.
The best part comes later: many tours grill what you caught. We caught very little and ate great anyway, so there’s no performance pressure, hahaha.
15. The southern lagoon and the view of the neighboring resort
From the southern end, you can see, one channel away, the luxury resort LUX* South Ari Atoll. The image is a good synthesis of the two Maldives: that of the overwater villas at 800 USD a night and that of the local island where you sleep for 70. We chose the second without a doubt.
The lagoon in that stretch is one of the calmest and is where the water gradient is best seen at noon. Below we leave you all the practical details.
16. Water sports, one of the things to do in Dhigurah with the calm lagoon
The lagoon on the west side is very calm and shallow, so it is ideal for kayaking, paddle surfing, and, if you like a bit more adrenaline, jet skiing or wakeboarding. Several guesthouses lend kayaks for free to their guests; at the centers that rent them separately, the hourly rate is around 10-20 USD.
We went out kayaking early, with the water like a mirror, and from above you can see turtles passing underneath. It is one of the things to do in Dhigurah that costs almost nothing and is very rewarding.
17. A day trip to a resort island
From Dhigurah, you can hire day passes to nearby resorts in the South Ari Atoll, like LUX* South Ari Atoll or Villa Park. You pay a fee for the day (the prices we saw started around 100-150 USD per person, depending on whether it includes food and drinks) and get access to the pool, sun loungers, and bar.
It is the way to experience both sides of the Maldives without paying for a night at a resort. It is also the only way to have alcohol, because it is not sold on the local island. Book it one or two days in advance from your accommodation, because resorts limit capacity.
18. A Maldivian cooking class with local families
Several women on the island organize private classes in their homes: they teach you how to make mas huni, fresh tuna curry, roshi, and those fried snacks that are called “hedhikaa” in the Maldives. It usually lasts two or three hours and ends with a meal at the table.
It is one of the things to do in Dhigurah that connects you best with the real life of the island, especially if you go outside of high season and there is time to chat. It is coordinated at the guesthouse the day before.
19. Snorkeling with nurse sharks and coral garden
Apart from the whale shark outing, there are half-day snorkeling tours that make three stops: a coral garden, a turtle area, and a nurse shark spot, which are big, slow, and harmless. The prices on the island ranged from 40 to 70 USD per person.
We thought this was the best price-experience ratio after the whale shark, especially if the sea does not allow going out to the open ocean. Always ask how many stops are included and if the guide gets into the water with the group.
20. The sunset from the west coast, the closing of the things to do in Dhigurah
We close the list with the simplest and most repeated thing: sitting on the west beach to watch the sun go down. Because the island is narrow and oriented north-south, you have the full sunset over the sea, with nothing to block it.
Our favorite moment of the 7 nights was this: the last few days we would go down with a thermos/mate and stay until it got dark. You don’t need to book anything or pay anything. And yes, it is one of the best sunsets we saw in the country.
Where to Stay in Dhigurah
All the things to do in Dhigurah are within walking distance of the village, and that is where the accommodation is concentrated. There are no resorts on the island: they are guesthouses and small hotels, almost all concentrated in the village, a few meters from the beach. The prices we saw range from 50 USD a night in a simple room to 150 USD in the more curated options with full board.
Our advice is to book with half-board or breakfast (they are quite complete with the mas huni): there are few restaurants on the island and eating out all the time ends up costing about the same. And book in advance if you travel between December and February, because the island is small and fills up.

How to get to Dhigurah
There is no airport on the island and no direct public ferry from Malé, so the usual route is the shared speedboat, which takes about 2 hours.
Shared speedboat
It leaves from Velana / Malé airport twice a day, generally at 11:00 and 16:30, with earlier times on Fridays. The price is around 60-80 USD per person each way, and some boats that make intermediate stops lower it to 45-50 USD. The return usually leaves Dhigurah at 07:00 and 13:00.
Domestic flight
The other option is to fly from Malé to Maamigili (about 20 minutes) and from there cross by boat for 20 minutes to Dhigurah. It costs significantly more but saves you if your international flight arrives late and you miss the last speedboat.
Public ferry (the budget option)
At the moment, There is no direct public ferry from Malé to Dhigurah. What does exist, which people mention, is the combination of local ferries via Mahibadhoo, the capital of the atoll. The full journey takes 7 hours or more, costs a few dollars (about 8 USD total), and does not run on Fridays.
The usual combination leaves early from Dhigurah towards Mahibadhoo and there you link with the ferry to Malé (be careful to check or get good advice when you go, so you can manage to make the connection). It works if you are traveling with plenty of time and a small budget, or if you are island hopping around the atoll. If you have an international flight, we don’t recommend it: any delay (they often leave at different times than scheduled) will leave you stranded on the island, hehe…

Transfer tips
Book the transfer through your accommodation: they reserve your seat, wait for you at the port, and reschedule you if the boat is canceled due to weather, which happens. And leave a margin: if your flight lands after 15:00, it is likely that you will have to sleep one night in Malé or Hulhumalé.

Money and payments: budget for things to do in Dhigurah
The official currency is the Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR), but in practice the US Dollar is accepted everywhere: accommodations, excursions, and most shops. The prices for guesthouses and tours are directly in dollars.
There is an ATM on the island, but there is only one and it often runs out of cash. Cards work at accommodations and dive centers, but not always at local cafes or village shops. If you can, bring cash in dollars in small bills from Malé and don’t depend on the ATM.
Keep in mind: many accommodations add 16% GST plus the green tax per person per night. Always ask if the price they give you already includes it, because it is a big difference at the end of the stay.
Where to eat in Dhigurah
Among the things to do in Dhigurah also fall its meals, and here there are two worlds. On one hand, the restaurants of the guesthouses and a couple of places facing the beach, with international menus and prices from 10 to 25 USD per dish. On the other, the local cafes of the village, where you eat for 2 or 3 dollars and where we stayed several times for breakfast.
Fish is the most worthwhile option in either: grilled fresh tuna, mild curries, and rice. Since the island doesn’t have too many options, booking half-board or full-board at the accommodation usually costs about the same as eating out every day and takes the stress off your mind.
And remember: no alcohol is sold on the island, neither in restaurants nor in stores. If you want to have a drink, it’s on a day pass to a resort or on an authorized boat.
What NOT to do in Dhigurah: local rules
This is what causes the most blunders among those looking for things to do in Dhigurah, and almost no guide explains it well. Dhigurah is an inhabited island of a Muslim country, so there are rules that are not suggestions:
- Bikini only on the designated beach. In the village, the port, and the rest of the island, shoulders and knees must be covered.
- No alcohol or bringing it in luggage: it will be seized at the Malé customs and returned to you when leaving the country.
- No public displays of affection beyond the minimum.
- Ask for permission before photographing people, especially women and children.
- During Ramadan many shops change hours and eating or drinking in the street during the day is not allowed.
- Do not touch, step on, or take coral: besides damaging the reef, taking it out of the country is prohibited.
Health, vaccines, and water
No mandatory vaccine is needed to enter the Maldives from Argentina or Spain, except for the yellow fever certificate if you come from a country where the disease is endemic. It is advisable to have the usual schedule up to date and, if you are going to dive, to have the corresponding medical check-up.
Tap water is not for drinking: bottled or filtered water is consumed on the island, and almost all accommodations offer a few bottles included each day or have a refill station. Bring repellent, reef-safe sunscreen, and something for minor injuries, because coral cuts are the most common injury and in the tropics they get infected quickly.
