1. Bikini Beach, the beach that justifies the trip
We start with the obvious, because here the obvious is spectacular. Ukulhas’ Bikini Beach occupies almost a kilometer of the island’s south coast and is one of the longest of all local islands in the Maldives. Fine white sand, turquoise water with that unreal transparency, free loungers and umbrellas, and a natural shade area with palm trees for when the sun gets too strong.
In our case, the hotel was facing the beach and had loungers, although you had to go early to get a spot in the front row. The beach was very spacious and there was plenty of room, though with little shade. In the late afternoon, it gets even more beautiful because the tide goes out and a new strip of sand appears that wasn’t there in the morning.
Things to keep in mind: it is the only area of the island where foreigners can wear swimwear or bikinis. Outside of this sector, even walking back to the accommodation, you should wear a t-shirt and shorts or a sarong. It is not a suggestion, it is the code of conduct of a Muslim island that must be respected.
2. The house reef: snorkeling ten meters from the shore
If there is one of the things to do in Ukulhas that sets it apart from other local islands, it is its house reef. In front of Bikini Beach, the reef starts practically as soon as you enter the water: no need to pay for any excursion or get on a boat to see live corals, schools of parrotfish, and surgeonfish everywhere.
We would go in with mask and snorkel two or three times a day, without a plan and without a schedule. The coral wall drops vertically quite quickly, so in a few strokes, you are already over the deep blue. If you don’t have much experience, stay on the inside: the current on the edge can pick up suddenly when the tide changes.
TIP: bring your own snorkel gear from home. Renting it on the island costs between 5 and 10 dollars per day, and in six nights you have already paid for a new one. Also, rental equipment is usually quite worn out and masks leak water.
3. Swimming with green turtles without paying for an excursion
One of the things to do in Ukulhas that surprised us the most was how easy it was to see turtles. In the eastern part of the reef, where the coral forms lower gardens, they feed almost every day. We saw turtles four out of the six days, always between 8:00 and 10:00 AM, which is when the water is calmest.
It is not a guaranteed show or an aquarium: they are wild animals and there are days when none appear. But the odds here are much better than on other islands where they sell you a “swim with turtles” excursion for 40 dollars. Here you simply get in the water and wait.
Golden rule: do not touch or chase them, and keep at least three meters of distance. If a turtle surfaces to breathe and you are on top of it, you stress it out and it leaves. With patience and stillness, they come on their own.
4. The northern tip and its sandspit
Walking toward the northern end of the island, passing the guesthouse area, a sandspit appears that changes shape depending on the season.
We went in the afternoon and we were almost always alone. The current at the tip is really strong, so it’s a place to walk and take pictures, not to go for a long swim.
5. The harbor at sunset: baby sharks and rays
This is the free activity we repeated the most. Every afternoon, when the fishermen return and clean their catch of the day at the pier, small blacktip reef sharks, nurse sharks, and some rays come to eat the scraps. They are clearly visible from above, with the water illuminated by the harbor lights.
It’s a very local moment: Maldivian families with children, some travelers, and not much else. We would sit on the edge of the pier watching the water until it got dark. One of those simple things you remember more than the expensive excursions.
Schedule: between 17:30 and 19:00 approximately, depending on when the boats come in. Ask at your accommodation in the morning; they always know.
6. The recycling center, the island’s pride
It sounds strange to put a waste plant among the things to do in Ukulhas, but it makes perfect sense. Ukulhas was the first inhabited island in the Maldives to set up a serious waste management system, back in 2011, and in 2014 it received the Green Leaf Award from the government. Today they separate waste into organic and non-organic, compost, recycle, and have banned single-use plastics.
Why does it matter? Because you notice it as soon as you get off the boat. After having seen the less beautiful side of other local islands, where trash is burned at the tip of the island, arriving in Ukulhas and seeing separated bins every fifty meters and immaculate streets is a huge contrast. If you are interested, you can ask the island council to see the center from the outside; it is not a set-up tourist attraction, it is a working facility.

7. Getting lost in the sandy streets of the town
Among all the things to do in Ukulhas, this is the part that is usually skipped. The town is small and can be covered in half an hour, but it’s worth doing slowly. The streets are made of compacted, snow-white sand, with low-rise houses painted in colors, overflowing bougainvillea, and wooden swings on almost every corner.
Those swings (the famous “joali”) are the social center of the island: people sit there to chat when the sun goes down. We sat down several times and someone always ended up asking us where we were from. The Maldivian hospitality on local islands is real and not faked at all.
8. The mosque and the island’s daily life
The main mosque marks the rhythm of the day with the five calls to prayer. You cannot enter if you are not Muslim, but listening to the call in the afternoon while walking around the island is part of the experience. On Fridays at noon, almost everything closes for a couple of hours for the main prayer, including some shops and even certain boat transfers.
Around it, you will find the school, the health center, the soccer field where they play every afternoon, and several small stores that sell everything from water to imported cookies. Be careful about one thing: on local islands, alcohol is not sold, and you cannot bring alcoholic beverages into the country.
9. The west beach and the prettiest sunset in Ukulhas
While Bikini Beach faces south, the west coast is where the sun sets. It is not a swimming beach (there is more stone and dead coral on the shore), but it is the best point on the island to watch the sunset, with the boats anchored in the foreground and the sky turning from orange to violet in a matter of minutes.
If you are lucky, you can also see dolphins in the distance from there early in the morning. It happened to us only once, but it was a great moment.
10. Snorkeling with manta rays at the atoll’s spots
One of the star excursions and one of the essentials in Ukulhas if you travel during the right season. The North Ari Atoll has several cleaning stations where mantas come close to the reef, and all guesthouses organize half-day trips.
Here is our dose of honesty: it is not guaranteed. It depends on the season, the current, and luck. We went out once and didn’t see any, and other guests from the same guesthouse saw them the next day. If they sell it to you as something guaranteed, be suspicious. Most serious operators offer to repeat the trip at half price if there was no sighting.
Approximate price: between 40 and 60 dollars per person for a half-day trip, equipment included.
11. Excursion to a sandbank, the classic of the Maldives
A sandbank in the middle of the ocean, without a single palm tree, with turquoise water swirling around. It is the postcard we all have in our heads when we think of the Maldives, and from Ukulhas, it takes about 20 or 30 minutes by boat.
We did our first excursion to a sandbank on another island, and the feeling of standing on a spot of sand in the middle of nowhere is hard to explain. If you’ve never done one, do it: it’s one of those things worth every dollar. Bring a hat, plenty of sunscreen, and water, because there is absolutely no shade.
12. Sunset fishing with local fishermen
Another of the most economical and, for us, most fun trips. You go out in a traditional dhoni when the sun begins to set, you get a hand line (no rods) and fish the old-fashioned way while the sky catches fire.
The best part comes after: if you caught something, the guesthouse cooks it for dinner. We weren’t exactly the best fishermen on the boat, hahaha, but we ate anyway thanks to the generosity of the rest. It usually costs between 25 and 35 dollars per person.
13. Diving at the best spots in the North Ari Atoll
If you dive, you are in one of the best places in the world to do so. Around Ukulhas there are several spots accessible in a few minutes by boat, with channels where reef sharks, turtles, napoleon wrasses, and, depending on the season, whale sharks can be found in the southern part of the atoll.
We don’t dive, we snorkel, so we tell you this with some distance: many travelers who stayed with us agreed that the diving centers in Ukulhas are good but more expensive than those on other local islands. If diving is your priority and your budget is tight, it is worth comparing prices with Rasdhoo before booking.
14. Rasdhoo and Madivaru, the neighboring island you visit for the day
Rasdhoo is about 50 minutes away by local ferry and is one of the easiest excursions from Ukulhas to organize. In addition to the town, you can reach Madivaru, a small islet with an interior lagoon of an incredible color.
The Rasdhoo + Ukulhas combination is, in fact, one of the most recommended itineraries for those who have a week in the Maldives and don’t want to go back to Malé between islands. Check the ferry days well before planning the itinerary, because there is no connection every day.
15. Thoddoo, the island of fruits and empty beaches
One option is to go to Thoddoo, the agricultural island of the atoll. It is famous for its watermelon and papaya plantations, something very rare in a country where almost everything is imported, and for having a beautiful and wide bikini beach.
It can be done in a day if the ferry schedules allow, although we recommend sleeping at least one night there. We stayed there. At the moment there was no direct Speedboat, but local snorkel boats can organize the trip to Thoddoo. As long as the tide helps. The logic of moving between islands of the same atoll without going through the capital is what makes a DIY trip to the Maldives more flexible.
16. Day visit to a nearby resort
Of all the things to do in Ukulhas and surroundings, this is one of the plans most sought after by those who choose a local island: spend a day in a luxury resort in the atoll without paying 800 dollars a night. From Ukulhas, there are several resorts within a short boat distance, and many sell day passes that include transfer, pool access, lunch, and, in some cases, alcohol (something impossible on the local island).
Prices are around 100-150 euros per person depending on the resort and season, and they are booked through the guesthouse with one or two days’ notice. It’s not cheap, but if you want the overwater photo and a glass of wine by the sea, it’s the only way to do it without changing accommodation.
Our honest opinion: we didn’t do it. We prefer to spend that money on more nights on a local island, and the beach in Ukulhas is in no way inferior to that of a resort. But if you are traveling as a couple and looking for a different day, we perfectly understand the appeal.
17. Dinner on the beach at sunset
Various guesthouses and some island cafes set up tables directly on the sand of Bikini Beach when the sun goes down, with lanterns and the sea three meters away. It is the classic romantic plan in Ukulhas and you have to book it in advance, usually the day before.
The menu usually consists of fresh fish of the day, rice, Maldivian curry, and fruit. No alcohol, obviously: the most you will find are natural juices and non-alcoholic drinks. Even so, having dinner with your feet in the sand and the entire sky of stars above you is one of those things you remember.
18. Excursion to an uninhabited picnic island
Different from the sandbank: here we are talking about a truly deserted island, with vegetation, palm trees, and beach, but with no one living there. Guesthouses organize half-day or full-day trips with lunch included and usually combine it with a snorkeling stop.
It is one of the less advertised excursions from Ukulhas and, for us, one of the prettiest: you have shade (something that doesn’t exist on the sandbank) and the feeling of a private island for a few hours.
19. Tour Ukulhas by bicycle
The island can be walked entirely, but several guesthouses lend or rent bicycles for a few dollars a day. Riding a bike through the sandy streets, crossing from the beach to the town and from the town to the harbor, is a different way to experience the pace of the place.
It is especially useful if you stay at the northern end and Bikini Beach is twenty minutes away: by bike, it’s five. Be careful with loose sand in some sections, which makes the back wheel slip.
20. Sunrise from the east coast
If the sunset is on the west side, the sunrise is on the east, and very few people take advantage of it. We got up twice before 6:00 AM and the reward was a completely empty beach, the sea like a mirror, and the most beautiful light of the day for photos.
It is also the best time to get into the water: visibility for snorkeling in the early hours is notably better than at noon, when the movement of boats and swimmers stirs up the sand.
Where to stay in Ukulhas
Ukulhas has several guesthouses and accommodations; that’s good news: there is competition and prices remain reasonable. You can find everything from basic rooms for about 40 dollars to beach-front options around 120. Almost all include breakfast, and many offer half-board, which is convenient because dining options on the island are limited.
We chose a hotel facing Bikini Beach, which on an island of this size means “close to everything.” All the things to do in Ukulhas are less than twenty minutes walking, so what matters is not the distance but that the accommodation organizes the transfers: they are the ones who get you the speedboat and wait for you at the pier.
Book in advance. In peak season (December to April) the best guesthouses fill up months in advance, and being left without a place on an island of this size means you have to change islands.

Where to eat in Ukulhas and how much it costs
Among all the things to do in Ukulhas, eating is the topic where it is best to go prepared. Ukulhas has a dozen cafes and restaurants, but it is one of the local islands where eating is more expensive: a main course in a tourist-oriented place is around 10-15 dollars, while in a “hotaa” (the typical local cafe) you can eat for 3 to 6 dollars.
Half-board at the guesthouse is almost always cheaper than eating out every day, especially if you are traveling as a couple.
The double menu trick
In some restaurants on the island, two menus circulate, one with local prices and another with prices for tourists that can double the cost. It is not illegal or unique to Ukulhas, but it is good to know.
How to avoid a bad experience: always ask the waiter for the menu instead of grabbing one from the counter, confirm the price of what you order before it comes out of the kitchen, and see if the amount includes the tourism tax (GST) and service charge, because often they are added at the end and the bill surprises you.
What to try no matter what
- Mas huni: shredded tuna with grated coconut, onion, and lime, the quintessential Maldivian breakfast, served with roshi (a type of flatbread).
- Garudhiya: clear tuna broth with rice, lime, and chili. Simple and great.
- Fish curry: the standard dinner at guesthouses, different each day depending on what was caught.
- Hedhikaa: fried snacks sold in the late afternoon at cafes, very cheap and very addictive.
- Raa and fresh fruit juices: there is no alcohol, but mango and papaya shakes are excellent.

Best time to visit Ukulhas month by month
Maldives can be visited all year round, but not all months are the same. The real difference is between the dry monsoon (iruvai, from December to April) and the wet one (hulhangu, from May to November).

We went in mid-February and had six days of full sun. If your priority is snorkeling and photos, that window is the safest. If your priority is price and you are not afraid of a cloudy day, the shoulder of May or November gives a very good quality-price ratio.
How to get to Ukulhas from Malé
Ukulhas is about 75 kilometers west of Malé, in the Alif Alif atoll (North Ari). There are two ways to get there and the difference between one and the other is money and patience.
Speedboat: the practical option
It is what we used and what 90% of travelers use. Shared boats leave from Velana airport several times a day (usual schedules are around 10:30 AM and 4:30 PM, with changes during Ramadan) and the trip lasts between 60 and 90 minutes depending on the state of the sea. It costs between 50 and 75 dollars per person each way.
The reservation is made through your accommodation: they buy the seat at the time that best connects with your flight, and someone waits for you at the pier upon arrival. You don’t need to manage it yourself from the outside.
Public ferry: the cheap option
The public ferry is very cheap (less than 5 dollars) but requires planning. The Malé-Rasdhoo-Ukulhas route operates only a few days a week, leaves in the morning from the Malé ferry terminal, and takes between three and a half and five hours because it stops in Rasdhoo. Fridays there is usually no service due to the noon prayer.
Important: public ferry schedules change with the season, and there is no 100% reliable online system. The MTCC network was updated in 2026 and the frequencies you read in blogs from two or three years ago may be outdated. Always confirm with your guesthouse the week before the trip. If your flight arrives at night, forget about the ferry: you will have to spend a night in Malé or Hulhumalé anyway.

Travel insurance for the Maldives
Maldives requires all visitors to have medical coverage, and beyond the requirement, the reality is simple: you are on an island with a basic health center, and anything serious is solved with a boat or seaplane transfer to Malé. That, without insurance, costs a fortune.

Three days (most chosen)
Day 1: beach, reef, and harbor.

Day 3: sunrise on the east coast, free morning on the beach, and afternoon bike ride around the island. It is the ideal balance between rest and activity.
Five days or more (what we did)
You add a big excursion (picnic island or sunset fishing), a day trip to Rasdhoo or Thoddoo, and you still have entire days without a plan, which in the Maldives is exactly the point. If you are going to be there for five nights or more, the public ferry starts to make economic sense over the speedboat.
Practical tips for Ukulhas
These are the details we would have liked to read before traveling and that quite change the experience.
Money and payments
Bring cash in dollars. There is an ATM on the island, but it doesn’t always work with foreign cards and commissions are high. Several guesthouses accept cards with a surcharge between 3% and 5%, and excursions and small cafes are almost always cash only. The rufiyaa is little used with tourists: you will be quoted everything in dollars.
Connectivity
Mobile coverage on the island is good and most accommodations have free Wi-Fi, although speed varies and it drops during peak hours. You can buy a local SIM from Dhiraagu or Ooredoo at the airport, or solve it before leaving with an eSIM and avoid the line upon arriving tired from the flight.
Cultural norms
Ukulhas is a Muslim island and works with clear rules: swimwear only on Bikini Beach; shoulders and knees covered in town, also for men; no alcohol or pork products; and ask for permission before taking photos of people, especially women and children. During Ramadan, many cafes close during the day and boat schedules change.
What to bring
- Your own snorkel gear (mask and tube): it pays for itself in three days.
- Reef-safe sunscreen, without oxybenzone: you protect the reef and it is expensive and scarce on the island.
- Water shoes or sandals to enter without hurting yourself on the coral.
