Ramla Bay is located in the north of the island of Gozo, in the municipality of Nadur. It is situated in a natural valley surrounded by green hills that lead directly into the Mediterranean Sea. This privileged geographical position gives the beach an incredible landscape setting: you descend through fields and suddenly that strip of reddish sand appears in front of turquoise waters.
The bay is relatively isolated from the urban center, which helps to preserve its wild and natural character. However, that does not mean it is inaccessible —quite the opposite, as we explain later, getting there is quite simple.

How to get to Ramla Bay Gozo by bus (and without a car)
One of the great advantages of Ramla Bay is that you can get there perfectly by public transport, something that is not always possible at more remote beaches in the Mediterranean. We did it this way and it worked wonderfully.
The Malta and Gozo bus service (Malta Public Transport) connects Ramla Bay with the main points of the island. From Victoria (Rabat), the capital of Gozo, you take line 322/302 and it leaves you a few meters from the beach entrance. If you come from Mġarr, the arrival port for the ferries, you also have direct options or with a transfer in Victoria.
From Xlendi, where we stayed, the route involved first going to Victoria and then taking the bus to Ramla. In total, counting the waiting times, it is about 45-60 minutes of travel. Nothing complicated. Although, the frequencies are sometimes not the best, or they can get crowded quickly.
Once you get off the bus, you walk a few blocks downhill and you are at the beach. It is a very short and pleasant walk, with beautiful views the whole way.
Is it worth renting a car to go to Ramla Bay?
If you already have a rental car in Gozo, you can go perfectly. There is parking near the beach, although in high season it gets difficult. But honestly, given how well the bus works, we don’t believe it is necessary to rent a vehicle just for this excursion.

The day we went it was very windy, which caused quite a bit of swell. It is not the most common (calm days are the majority), but even so, the beach seemed beautiful to us and the atmosphere was very pleasant. We walked along the shore, sat down to watch the sea, and enjoyed the scenery.
The natural environment
Beyond the sand and the sea, the environment of Ramla Bay is spectacular. The beach is framed by hills with Mediterranean vegetation and farmland that give it a rural and authentic air. There are no large buildings or invasive urban developments on the beachfront. It is, in short, a beach that still retains its wild character.
On the slopes surrounding the bay, you can see remains of native vegetation and, if you are lucky, some of the lizards that inhabit the area. There are also spectacular views towards the open sea that are worth every photo.
Services and infrastructure in Ramla Bay
One of the things that surprised us most about Ramla Bay is that, being a relatively “wild” beach, it has quite complete service infrastructure. Here we detail what you will find:
- Lifeguards: The beach has a lifeguard service in high season, which is an important safety guarantee, especially if there are waves.
- Free public restrooms: Yes, free! Something that is not always easy to find on European beaches. They are well maintained and easily accessible.
- Access for people with reduced mobility: The beach has a wooden path over the sand that facilitates movement. Ideal for people with physical disabilities, elderly people, or families with baby strollers. An inclusion detail that is very much appreciated.
- Place to eat at the beach: There is a small establishment where you can buy something to eat or drink. It is not a formal restaurant, but it is enough to recharge energy without having to go far away.
- Food trucks at the entrance: On the street accessing the beach you will find several food trucks with varied options. A good option to have lunch before or after the beach.
- Rental of umbrellas and sunbeds: In high season there is usually beach equipment rental service.

A few meters from the beach, at the top of the cliff that borders the bay on the west side, is the famous Calypso Cave. According to Greek mythology, this is the cave where the nymph Calypso held the hero Ulysses (Odysseus) for seven years, as recounted by Homer in the Odyssey.
Although the interior of the cave is not visitable (it is closed to the public for safety reasons), you can go up to the viewpoint that is right above it, from where the views towards Ramla Bay and the sea are absolutely impressive. The walk from the beach takes about 10-15 minutes and is completely worth it.
This historical-mythological addition gives Ramla Bay an extra dimension: it is not just a beautiful beach, but also a place loaded with history and legend.
Where to eat near Ramla Bay Gozo
As we mentioned, at the entrance to the beach there are several food trucks that offer quick options: sandwiches, pizzas, pastizzi (the typical Maltese pastries), cold drinks, and ice cream. They are perfect for an informal lunch.
If you prefer something more sit-down and quiet, the village of Nadur is a few minutes away by bus or car and has some local restaurant options where you can try authentic Maltese food at a good price.
You can also bring your own food and have a picnic on the beach, something many visitors do and which works wonderfully given the natural environment of the place.
The best time to visit Ramla Bay
Gozo has a typical Mediterranean climate: hot and dry summers, mild and somewhat rainy winters. To visit Ramla Bay as a beach (that is, for swimming), the ideal season is from May to October, with the months of July and August as the peak of heat and tourist influx.
If you prefer to avoid the crowds, June and September are excellent months: the sea is already warm, it is hot but without the stress of full summer, and there are fewer tourists. We visited Malta and Gozo in a transition period and the weather was very pleasant.
In winter the beach is still beautiful for walking, but swimming is quite cold. If your main goal is the scenery and photos, you can visit Ramla Bay throughout the year.
Ramla Bay vs other Gozo beaches
Gozo has other interesting beaches, but Ramla Bay clearly stands out above them. Why?
- San Blas Bay: It also has similar reddish sand, but it is much smaller and only accessible on foot or by boat. More intimate, but with many fewer services.
- Marsalforn Beach: Urban beach with a lot of infrastructure, but with sand mixed with stones and without the natural magic of Ramla.
- Xlendi Bay: A beautiful fishing village with a small rocky beach. Ideal for the town’s atmosphere, not so much for a sandy beach.
- Dwejra Bay: Famous for the Azure Window (now gone), it is not really a beach for swimming.

- Arrive early: In summer, the beach gets quite full from midday. Arriving at 9-10 AM ensures you a good spot.
- Bring sunscreen: The reddish sand reflects quite a bit of sunlight. The sun is strong in summer.
- Wear water shoes: The bottom is sandy but there may be stones on the shores. Water shoes are useful.
- Check the wind: As happened to us, there may be windy days with a lot of swell. It is not common, but check the forecast beforehand.
- Combine with Calypso Cave: Go up to the viewpoint after the beach. The view from above is incredible and it doesn’t take more than 30 extra minutes.
- Bring cash: Food trucks and stalls usually do not accept cards.
- Respect the environment: It is a beach with great natural value. Take your trash with you, don’t collect sand, and respect the surrounding vegetation.
