Where is Xlendi located and how to get there?
Xlendi (pronounced “Shlendy”) is a small coastal town located in the municipality of Munxar, in the southwest of the island of Gozo. From Victoria (the capital of Gozo), the car ride takes just about 10 minutes, going down a road that winds between limestone fields until reaching the bay.
To get to Gozo from Malta, the most convenient way is to take the ferry from Ċirkewwa (north of Malta) to Mġarr (Gozo). The trip takes approximately 25 minutes and departs quite frequently. Once in Gozo, you can rent a car, scooter, or take public transport to Xlendi.
If you go by bus, line 306/330 connects Victoria with Xlendi quite regularly. If you prefer autonomy (which is what we recommend), renting a car or a motorbike allows you to explore the whole island with much more freedom. Gozo is small and can be traveled entirely in one day.
Things to do in Xlendi, Gozo: the must-sees of the bay
Xlendi Bay is the heart of the village and probably one of the most beautiful in all of Malta. It is surrounded by limestone cliffs that drop directly into the sea, creating a unique postcard that remains etched in the memory. The water has tones of blue and turquoise that are not seen in many places, thanks in large part to the coral formations that develop in this area.
The bay has a very small sandy beach with shallow waters, perfect for those traveling with children or who prefer a calmer entry into the sea. However, the most characteristic thing about Xlendi is not that beach, but the left side of the bay: a stone path that runs along the sea, with rock benches where people sit to sunbathe, read, or simply gaze at the water.
Along that path, there is a strip of flat rocks with different ladders carved directly into the stone to get into the sea. There is even a diving board! The water in this sector has a truly special color, that mix of deep blue and emerald green that invites you to jump in headfirst at any time of the day.
Activities in the bay
- Swimming and snorkeling from the shore
- Rental kayaks available in summer
- Artisanal fishing with local fishermen
- Sunset photography from the promenade
- Boat trips from the small pier
Snorkeling and diving in Xlendi
Xlendi Bay is one of the best snorkeling and diving spots in Gozo. The waters are clear, warm in summer, and the coral formations offer very varied marine life. It is possible to see octopuses, colorful fish, starfish, and much more with just a mask and a snorkel.
For diving lovers, there are local operators that offer trips from the bay itself. The seabed in this area has caves and walls that are very popular among experienced divers. If you have never dived, you can also do a discovery dive with certified instructors who operate in the town.
Xlendi Tower: history and unique views
One of the most iconic points of things to do in Xlendi, Gozo, is undoubtedly the Xlendi Tower. This watchtower was built by the Order of Malta in the 17th century to protect the bay from possible attacks by pirates and corsairs sailing the Mediterranean. Today, it still stands and has become one of the symbols of the town.
The tower is located at the end of the promenade on the left side of the bay. Walking a few minutes from the center of the town, you already have it in sight. The most interesting thing is not just the tower itself, but the entire path that surrounds it: the surroundings look like something out of another world, with jagged rocks, unique geological formations, and the sea breaking against the cliffs.
If you keep walking a little further past the tower, you reach some natural viewpoints with stunning views of the south coast of Gozo. The path is not difficult; it only has a section of uphill that goes by quickly, and the visual reward is enormous. Completely free and completely unmissable.
It is about a 30-minute walk with spectacular views throughout the entire journey. If you can, arrive at sunset: the colors generated over the sea are of a beauty difficult to describe.

The walking route up the mountain: panoramic view of Xlendi
Do you want to see Xlendi from another perspective? On the right side of the bay (Xlendi cave), there is a small path that goes up the mountain and takes you to a small natural cave. Throughout the entire route, you have panoramic views of the bay, the town, and the cliffs that will leave you breathless.
The path is very easy and short, ideal to do at any time of the day (although we recommend avoiding noon in summer due to the heat). You don’t need any special equipment: with comfortable shoes and water, you’re ready.
The aerial perspective you get of Xlendi from this path / viewpoint is simply beautiful.
If you like hiking and coastal routes, Gozo in general is a paradise. This island is full of paths that connect towns, cliffs, and coves. If you have already visited Ramla Bay in Gozo, you will understand what we are talking about: every corner has something special to offer.
Sunsets in Xlendi: one of the most magical in Malta
Living two weeks in Xlendi gave us something we won’t forget: the sunsets. The sun drops slowly over the sea and the bay turns into a postcard of orange, pink, and gold tones that is difficult to describe with words. On the left side of the bay, you can see the silhouette of the Xlendi Tower, and on the right side, a huge cliff rises, framing the scene in an almost theatrical way.
In that part of the bay, there are many perfect spots in nature for having some mate and sunset (unique moments of the day). Or otherwise, in the town, there are tables with chairs to sit and watch the sun go down with a glass of local wine or simply contemplate the horizon. It is a very calm and romantic moment that contrasts with the activity of the day.
We watched as many sunsets as we could during our stay and we never got tired of them. It was a very special moment for us!.
If you are traveling as a couple, this is definitely one of those places that must be on the list. And if you are traveling alone, too: those sunsets are the kind that recharge your batteries to keep exploring the world.
What else to do in Xlendi and its surroundings?
Eat and drink by the sea
Xlendi has several restaurants and bars facing the bay, most specializing in seafood and Maltese cuisine. Lampuki (mahi-mahi, a typical fish of Malta), bragioli, and ftira (local bread) are some of the specialties worth trying. Prices are reasonable, especially compared to those of Southern Western Europe.
For an aperitif or the end of the day, there are bars with terraces by the water where you can order a Cisk (the local Maltese beer) or a wine from the island while the sun goes down. The atmosphere is very quiet and the service is friendly. In Xlendi, there are no large chains or mass tourism: everything has that local and authentic touch that is so appreciated.
Supermarkets / Fruits and Vegetables in Xlendi
In Xlendi, there are 2 small supermarkets (mini markets) where you can find the basics and resolve last-minute purchases. Also, during the week, a small truck usually passes by selling fresh fruits and vegetables, a very practical and authentic option on the island (it surprised us and we tried to buy from them always).
For more complete shopping or finding more variety, it is best to go to Victoria, where the largest supermarkets are located. We really liked the Greens Supermarket Gozo, it has everything; though, prices can be a bit higher than other places.
Don’t forget to take out travel insurance before leaving. We always travel with IATI Insurance, and you can get a 5% exclusive discount through our link. It is the insurance we use on all our trips and it has never failed us.
Visit Victoria (Rabat) from Xlendi
Xlendi is just 10 minutes from Victoria, the capital of Gozo (also called Rabat). From there you can visit the Citadel, one of the most impressive historical sites in the entire Maltese archipelago. The Citadel is a medieval walled city that dominates the island from above and offers 360° views that are spectacular.
Combining a morning in Victoria with an afternoon in Xlendi is one of the best combinations that can be done in Gozo. You can also take the opportunity to explore the local markets of Victoria, where you will find cheeses, honey, olive oil, and island handicrafts.

Excursion to Comino and the Blue Lagoon
If you want to make the most of your visit to Malta and Gozo, an excursion to the island of Comino is unmissable. The famous Blue Lagoon is one of those places that truly live up to their fame: intense turquoise waters, practically no vegetation, and incredible transparency.
From Mġarr, boats depart for Comino frequently. The ideal is to go early to avoid the midday crowds. It is worth it.

Beyond Xlendi, Gozo has a lot to offer: the Dwejra Cliffs (where the famous Azure Window was before it collapsed), the Marsalforn salt pans, the prehistoric Ggantija temples (older than Stonehenge), and much more. If you have time, staying at least two or three nights on the island is completely worth it.
When to visit Xlendi, Gozo?
Malta and Gozo have a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters. The best time to visit Xlendi depends on what you are looking for:
- June to September: ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and diving. The water is warm and sun is guaranteed. It is high season, so there are more tourists, but Xlendi never gets as saturated as other parts of Malta.
- April, May, and October: ideal season for us. Pleasant weather, fewer people, lower prices, and the nature is still very green. The sea is already quite good in May and October.
- November to March: the island is almost deserted, many businesses close, but the landscape has a different beauty and prices are very low. Ideal if you are looking for total tranquility.
We were in Xlendi in mid-September and it was great.

Xlendi has several accommodation options directly in the village, from beachfront apartments to boutique hotels. Most of the accommodations are small and family-run, which fits perfectly with the spirit of the place.
