If you are deciding where to stay in Bratislava, you have an advantage: it is a small, very walkable capital and quite a bit cheaper than Vienna or Prague. In this guide we tell you the 4 best areas, 11 hotels rated above 8 on Booking and a map to compare prices.

We visited in December, with the Christmas markets in full swing, and stayed in an apartment a 5-minute walk from the main square. It was an excellent decision: we went back to drop off our shopping and headed out again without thinking about transport.

What Bratislava is like for choosing where to stay

Bratislava’s old town is tiny: you can cross it on foot in 15 minutes. That is where you find the main square, St. Michael’s Gate, St. Martin’s Cathedral and the city’s famous statues. The castle sits on top of a hill, an uphill walk from the centre.

So the rule is simple: the closer to the old town you sleep, the less transport you will need. If you choose an area further out, check that it has a tram, because the network works very well and is cheap.

A practical tip: we arrived by train from Prague, at the main station, and left by bus from Nivy station to Vienna airport. If you are going to do something similar, it is worth checking where your accommodation is in relation to those two terminals. You can find the city’s official information at Visit Bratislava.

Lit-up street in Bratislava's old town, the best area to stay

1. Staré Mesto: the best area to stay in Bratislava

The old town is our recommendation for almost everyone, and even more so in December. The cobbled streets, the cafés and the Christmas markets are all here, so you can go in and out of the hotel as often as you like.

We stayed 5 minutes from the main square and noticed it above all at night: you walk back after dinner, with the city lit up, without waiting for any transport.

  • Pros: everything on foot, a beautiful atmosphere and the best choice of restaurants.
  • Cons: it is the most expensive area and, if you sleep on a street with bars, there can be noise at weekends.

2. The Danube riverside and Eurovea: sleeping with river views

If you prefer a bigger, more modern hotel, the Danube area is a good alternative. It runs from the UFO Bridge to Eurovea, a new neighbourhood by the river with a shopping centre, restaurants and a lovely promenade for walking.

You are 10-15 minutes on foot from the old town, with the advantage of having the river right next to you. The views from the UFO Bridge viewpoint, with the Danube and the castle, were one of our favourite images of the city.

  • Pros: modern hotels, river views and very quiet at night.
  • Cons: less charm than the old town, and in winter you feel the wind off the river.

Sheraton Bratislava Hotel (high price)

⭐ 9.0/10 on Booking · 1,200+ reviews

⭐ 9.0/10 on Booking · 1,200+ reviews

⭐ 8.7/10 on Booking · 9,000+ reviews

3. Between the centre and the station: good value for money

North of the old town, on the way to the main station (Hlavná stanica), there is a strip of hotels with slightly lower prices. You are still 10 minutes on foot from the main square, so the difference is minimal in time and can be big in money.

It is the most practical area if you arrive or leave by train, as happened to us when we came from Prague with our suitcases.

  • Pros: better prices, close to the Grassalkovich Palace and the station.
  • Cons: streets with more traffic and less atmosphere than the old town.

LOFT Hotel Bratislava (mid-range)

⭐ 9.4/10 on Booking · 8,300+ reviews

An industrial-style hotel on Štefánikova street, between the Grassalkovich Palace and the main station. It has its own restaurant and bar, and one of the highest ratings in the city.

➜ Check dates and prices at the LOFT Hotel (CLICK HERE)

Metropolitan Star Apart Hotel (mid-range)

⭐ 9.1/10 on Booking · 7,400+ reviews

A four-star apart-hotel near St. Michael’s Gate and the train station, with prices from about €82 a night. A good option if you want your own kitchen without moving away from the centre.

➜ See availability at the Metropolitan Star (CLICK HERE)

Hotel Saffron (budget)

⭐ 8.8/10 on Booking · 9,100+ reviews

On Radlinského street, about 10 minutes on foot from the old town. It is simple and functional, with one of the best value-for-money ratios in Bratislava.

➜ Book your room at Hotel Saffron (CLICK HERE)

4. Ružinov and Nivy: chain hotels at a better price

Ružinov is a residential neighbourhood east of the centre, with the new Nivy bus station and several chain hotels. It is not touristy, but the tram drops you in the old town in a few minutes.

We actually left from Nivy by bus to Vienna airport, so if you have an early bus, sleeping around here makes your morning easier.

  • Pros: cheaper, convenient if you travel by car and right next to the bus terminal.
  • Cons: you need the tram to get to the centre and the area has no charm.

Lindner Hotel Bratislava (mid-range)

⭐ 8.9/10 on Booking · 2,000+ reviews

It sits above the Central shopping centre, in Ružinov, a couple of tram stops from the old town and very close to the Nivy bus station.

➜ See photos and reviews of the Lindner Hotel (CLICK HERE)

DoubleTree by Hilton Bratislava (mid-range)

⭐ 8.7/10 on Booking · 1,600+ reviews

On Trnavská avenue, well connected by tram to the centre and handy if you arrive by car, because it usually has parking. Ideal if you are looking for a chain hotel at a better price.

➜ See prices for the DoubleTree by Hilton (CLICK HERE)

What about Petržalka, across the Danube?

Petržalka is the large neighbourhood of apartment blocks across the river, right below the UFO Bridge. There you will find apartments and guesthouses that are quite a bit cheaper, and from some points you can cross to the centre on foot over the Old Bridge.

It is an interesting option if you travel on a tight budget and don’t mind crossing the river every day, but for a short first visit we would stick with the old town.

Where to sleep in Bratislava at Christmas

In December the city changes completely: the Christmas markets take over Hlavné námestie and Hviezdoslavovo námestie, and many hotels decorate their entrances. That is why, on those dates, the old town is even more worth it.

Two tips from our visit: book in advance, because the market dates concentrate a lot of demand, and sleep at least one night in the city. Most people come on a day trip from Vienna and miss the markets lit up at night, which is when they are most beautiful.

You have all the details, dates and typical food in our guide to Bratislava at Christmas.

Tips before deciding where to stay in Bratislava

  • Check the distance to Hlavné námestie. Almost everything you will visit is within 10 minutes on foot of that square.
  • Book early for December. It is the city’s busiest season.
  • If you are coming from Vienna, stay the night. Bratislava is an hour away by train and the city at night is something else.
  • An apartment beats a hotel for several days. It is what we chose, and you notice it in the price.
  • If you go by car, confirm the parking. In the old town it is limited and paid.
  • Have data on your phone. With Holafly you get a 5% discount on your eSIM.

How to get to your accommodation in Bratislava

  • From Vienna: one hour by train, with frequent departures throughout the day. It is the most common way to arrive. We explain it in from Vienna to Bratislava.
  • From Bratislava airport (BTS): it is about 9 km from the centre. Bus 61 combined with the tram takes about 35-40 minutes and costs around €3.
  • From Vienna airport (VIE): there are direct buses to Nivy station, in the centre of Bratislava. It is the route we took, but the other way round.
  • By train from Prague or Budapest: you arrive at the main station, about 15 minutes on foot or two tram stops from the old town.

If you would rather arrive straight at the hotel door, there are private transfers at a fixed price per vehicle: €36 from Bratislava airport to the city and €101 from Bratislava airport to Vienna airport.

Staré Mesto, the old town. It is small, easy to explore on foot and it has the main square, the restaurants and the Christmas markets.

Is it expensive to stay in Bratislava?

It is quite a bit cheaper than Vienna or Prague. Even in December you will find four-star hotels in the centre at reasonable prices.

With one or two nights you see the city calmly. If you go at Christmas, sleep at least one night to see the markets lit up.

If you can, sleep in Bratislava. The day trip falls short and you miss the night-time atmosphere, which is the best of the city.

Where to stay cheaply in Bratislava?

Near the main station or in Petržalka, across the Danube. There are also apartments with very good value for money on the edge of the old town.

Yes. We walked around at night in December and the market area was very calm and well lit.

Our final recommendation

If it’s your first time, stay in Staré Mesto and that’s it: the city is so compact that you will make the most of every free moment. If you are looking to save, the strip between the centre and the station keeps you just as close for less money.
