We did this journey in reverse: we arrived in Bratislava by train from Prague and left by bus from Nivy station to Vienna airport. So we will also tell you about that connection, which many people need and almost no one explains.

Prices are estimates for 2026 and vary based on how far in advance you book. As a general rule: the train wins on comfort, the bus on price, and the boat on the experience.
1. From Vienna to Bratislava by train
This is the most comfortable option and the one we recommend if you don’t have a specific reason to choose another. The journey takes about an hour, there are about 20 trains per day, and they depart from Wien Hauptbahnhof (Vienna’s central station).
In Bratislava, you have two possible stations: Bratislava hlavná stanica, the main one, about a 15-minute walk from the Old Town, and Bratislava-Petržalka, on the other side of the Danube. Check carefully which one you are arriving at when buying your ticket, because from Petržalka you will need a bus to get to the center.
A single ticket usually costs between €7 and €14, but the most interesting option is the ÖBB Bratislava Ticket: for about €19 you get a round trip, you can return the same day or up to three days later, and the first day includes public transport in Bratislava. If you are spending the whole day, it’s the best deal.

2. By boat on the Danube: the Twin City Liner
It’s the most original way to arrive. The Twin City Liner is a fast catamaran that departs from the center of Vienna, at Schwedenplatz, and navigates the Danube to the center of Bratislava in about 75 minutes (90 minutes in the opposite direction, as it goes against the current).
Prices start at about €25 each way and it operates seasonally, from spring to December, with special departures on Advent weekends. It’s not the cheapest or fastest option, but the journey is part of the plan.
3. By bus: the cheapest option
If you want to spend the absolute minimum, the bus is unbeatable: there are frequent departures from FlixBus, RegioJet, and Slovak Lines, with tickets starting at about €5-10 if you book in advance. The trip takes between one hour and one hour and twenty minutes, depending on the service and traffic.
Most arrive at the Nivy station, a modern terminal inside a shopping center, about a 15-minute walk or two tram stops from the Old Town. We used it in the opposite direction and it works very well: it’s comfortable, has shops and toilets, and is easy to find.
4. By car: only if you are on a road trip
By car, it’s about 80 km via motorway and about an hour, depending on traffic leaving Vienna. Keep two things in mind: you need the Austrian and Slovak vignettes (which can be purchased online) and parking in Bratislava’s Old Town is limited and paid.
We only recommend this if you are already on a road trip through Central Europe or if you are continuing your journey to the Carpathians or Budapest. For a day trip, the train is simpler.
5. Excursion to Bratislava from Vienna with a guide
If you don’t want to organize anything, or you are traveling with little time, there are day trips from Vienna with guided tours. They usually include transport and a guided tour of the Old Town, and some return by boat along the Danube, so you combine two options in one.
It is the most comfortable alternative, although the most expensive and with fixed schedules. If you prefer to go on your own, the train and our city guide are more than enough.

From Vienna Airport to Bratislava
Many people fly to Vienna (VIE) and sleep in Bratislava because it’s cheaper. It is completely feasible: there are direct buses between Vienna airport and Nivy station in the center of Bratislava, with a travel time of about an hour.
We did this journey in reverse to catch our return flight, and it was very simple. A tip from that experience: leave yourself plenty of time, because it’s a border crossing and any traffic delays can eat into your buffer time.
If you are traveling with luggage, at night, or in a group, there is also private transfer with a flat price per vehicle: about €101 between Vienna airport and Bratislava, and about €36 between Bratislava airport and the center. Divided by three or four people, the difference compared to the bus shrinks significantly.
And if your plan is the other way around and you need to get around Vienna, there are also transfers from Vienna-Schwechat Airport to the center from about €75 per vehicle.
