What Gdańsk is like for choosing where to stay

Gdańsk’s old town is compact and easy to explore on foot: the Royal Route, the Motława river and the Crane are only minutes from each other. If you stay in the centre, you will not need transport to see the city.

For the areas further out, the key is the SKM train, which links Gdańsk with Sopot and Gdynia. The stations that are most useful to you are Gdańsk Główny (next to the old town), Gdańsk Śródmieście and Gdańsk Wrzeszcz. Jelitkowo beach is best reached by tram or by car.

For up-to-date information on transport, events and museum opening hours, we recommend the official Gdańsk tourism website.

1. Główne Miasto: the best area to stay in Gdansk

It is the heart of the city and the area we recommend for a first visit. Here you have Długa street, the Long Market, Neptune’s Fountain, Mariacka street and St. Mary’s Basilica. When we walked through it, it felt like something out of a fairy tale, and staying here means having it at any hour, also at night and early in the morning, when there are fewer people.

  • Pros: everything on foot, a beautiful atmosphere and plenty of restaurants.
  • Cons: it is the most expensive area and in summer there is a lot of activity.

2. Granary Island (Wyspa Spichrzów): modern and by the river

Just across the Motława is Granary Island, a renovated area with modern hotels, cafés and walkways by the water. You cross a bridge and you are at the Green Gate, so you have the old town a step away, with newer hotels than in the centre.

From the riverbank you also get the best views of the quay façades and the Crane. The walk along the river was one of our favourite corners of Gdańsk, and at sunset it is magical.

  • Pros: modern hotels, river views and a few steps from the centre.
  • Cons: there are still areas under construction and less historic charm.

Wrzeszcz is a residential and university neighbourhood north-west of the centre, with a young atmosphere, cafés and plenty of apartments. It is not touristy, and that is exactly why prices tend to be lower.

With the SKM you reach Gdańsk Śródmieście in a few minutes, and Gdańsk Wrzeszcz station puts you on the way to Sopot and Gdynia. It is the option we would choose for a long stay or for working remotely.

The three cities are linked by the SKM train, so you can stay in one and visit the others as day trips. This is how we see it:

  • Gdańsk: the best option if you have few nights and your priority is the old town. We tell you everything in things to do in Gdańsk.

  • Sopot: the most touristy and expensive in summer, ideal if you want a beach and atmosphere. We have a guide to things to do in Sopot.

Tips before deciding where to stay in Gdansk

  • Book early for July and August. It is high season and the hotels in the old town fill up fast.
  • June and September are the perfect balance between good weather, fewer people and better prices.
  • If you are going on excursions, prioritise the station. Having Gdańsk Główny close saves you time every day.
  • If you go by car, confirm the parking. In the historic centre it is limited and usually paid. If you plan to tour the coast on your own, you can compare rental prices.
  • Pay by card without a problem. Poland uses the złoty (PLN) and cards work practically everywhere.
  • Have data on your phone from the moment you land. With Holafly you get a 5% discount on your eSIM.

How to get to your hotel from Gdańsk airport

Lech Wałęsa airport (GDN) is about 16 km from the historic centre. You have these options:

  • Bus: it stops in front of the central station, next to the Scandic, in about 20 minutes. It is the cheapest option.
  • PKM train: it connects the airport with Gdańsk Wrzeszcz, where you can switch to the SKM.
  • Taxi, app or private transfer: the most comfortable option if you arrive at night or with lots of luggage. The private transfer from the airport to the centre costs around €53 per vehicle, at a fixed price.
