What El Cotillo is like for choosing where to stay

El Cotillo is in the north-west of the island and the offer is mostly holiday apartments, small guesthouses and low-rise complexes. There are hardly any big hotels: on Booking, with a score above 8, we found only a handful.

The village is walkable, but the beaches are spread out: La Concha and the lagoons in the north and Playa del Castillo and Piedra Playa in the south. That is why, more than the distance to the centre, it is best to choose according to which beach you will use most.

To get around the island, we recommend renting a car: El Cotillo is about 25 minutes from Corralejo and about 45 from the airport. Without a car, Tiadhe bus line 8 links Corralejo with El Cotillo, with a direct variant of about 25-30 minutes. Updated timetables are on the official Tiadhe website.

1. Los Lagos: the best area to stay in El Cotillo

It is the north of the village, between the centre and the lagoons. This is where the most modern part of El Cotillo developed, with holiday complexes and newer accommodation, close to the beach and a few minutes’ walk from the centre. Further north are La Concha and the lagoons, with calm waters and a relaxed atmosphere, very popular with families and couples.

  • Pros: the beach a few steps away, the hotels with pools in this guide and apartments facing the sea.
  • Cons: to reach Playa del Castillo and Piedra Playa you have to cross the village.

Sleep in El Cotillo or in Corralejo?

It depends on what you’re looking for. This is how we see it:

  • El Cotillo: smaller, quieter and more authentic. If you want a calm beach, surf and to really disconnect, El Cotillo wins. We tell you everything in things to do in El Cotillo.
  • Corralejo: bigger, with more restaurants, nightlife and tourist services. If you prefer activity and options, it is the better base. Check our guide to things to do in Corralejo.

We love both for different reasons. If you haven’t decided yet which part of the island to sleep in, we have our guide on where to stay in Fuerteventura.

Tips before deciding where to stay in El Cotillo

  • Avoid late July and August if you can. There is more tourism and prices go up quite a lot.
  • May-June and September-October are the sweet spot: fewer tourists, better prices and a gentler wind.
  • Choose the area according to your beach. For La Concha and the lagoons, Los Lagos; for Playa del Castillo and Piedra Playa, the south or the harbour.
  • Think about an apartment with a kitchen. It is what is most abundant in the village and there are supermarkets with good prices.
  • Bring something warm for the evening. The wind can surprise you, even in summer.
  • Have data on your phone from the moment you land. With Holafly you get a 5% discount on your eSIM.

The airport is about 50 km from El Cotillo, about 45 minutes by car. You have these options:

  • Rental car: the most practical option, because afterwards you will want to move between beaches. We explain how in renting a car in Fuerteventura.
  • Bus: from the airport to Puerto del Rosario and from there the direct line 7 to El Cotillo, which is not very frequent. The alternative is line 6 to Corralejo and line 8 to El Cotillo. Check the timetables on the Tiadhe website, because they change with the season.
  • Private or shared transfer: the most comfortable option if you arrive at night or with lots of luggage. You can book the transfer from the airport and choose El Cotillo as the destination.
