Where is Playa Figueirinha located and how to get there from Lisbon or Setúbal

Playa Figueirinha is located in the Serra da Arrábida, within the municipality of Setúbal, south of Lisbon. It is one of the most visited beaches due to its easy access, infrastructure, and stunning natural landscape.

From Lisbon: Your Step-by-Step Route to check out things to do in praia da Figueirinha

If you are staying in Lisbon, the trip to Figueirinha takes about two hours in total. First, you must reach Setúbal, which is the base city to access the beaches of the Serra da Arrábida. You have two main options:

Option 1 – Ferry and Bus (the most picturesque): Take the ferry from Cais do Sodré in Lisbon to Cacilhas (crossing the Tagus river), and from there take a bus to Setúbal. The ferry ride is short, affordable, and offers fantastic views of Lisbon from the water. This option takes about 1.5 hours in total.

Option 2 – Direct Bus: From the Sete Rios bus terminal in Lisbon, you can take direct buses from the companies TST or Rede Expressos to Setúbal. The trip lasts approximately 50 minutes and leaves every hour during the day. Prices are around 4-5 euros each way.

Once in Setúbal, head to the bus station (terminal de autocarros) to take the famous 723 bus.

How to get there by bus from Setúbal (line 723) to praia de figueirinha

We arrived on the 723 bus from the Setúbal bus station. The round-trip ticket costs €4.15, and can be purchased directly from the driver or paid with the Viva card, which is more convenient as the fare is slightly lower (the minimum top-up is €5).
The trip lasts about 20 minutes and drops you off right in front of the beach entrance. Practical, affordable, and hassle-free.

TIP: Viva Card, Save on Your Transfers

If you plan to use public transport several times or stay for a few days exploring different beaches, it’s worth getting the Viva Viagem card. This reloadable card works throughout the Lisbon and Setúbal region and offers slightly cheaper fares than paying with cash.

The card has an initial cost of 0.50 euros and requires a minimum top-up of 5 euros. You can purchase and recharge the card at any Lisbon metro station or at automatic machines in bus terminals. It is definitely an investment worth making if you are a frequent public transport traveler.

Alternatives: car, shuttle, and eco-friendly transport

If you prefer to go on your own, you can arrive by car (there is parking, though it fills up quickly in summer). There are also free shuttles that connect Figueirinha with other nearby beaches such as Galapos and Galapinhos.
And if you enjoy sustainable tourism, you can rent an electric bicycle in Setúbal for a coastal ride with incredible views.

Things to do in Playa Figueirinha: unmissable attractions

Have you ever imagined finding a piece of the Caribbean on Portuguese soil? Neither did we, until we stepped onto the white sand of Playa Figueirinha. As a couple of travelers always on the lookout for breath-taking destinations, we were completely amazed by this corner of the Parque Natural da Serra da Arrábida.

The name Figueirinha already evokes calm and nature. But once you’re there, you understand why it’s so special.

White sand and crystalline bay waters

When we arrived at Figueirinha and saw those waters, we literally asked ourselves if we had been magically transported to the Caribbean. The bright turquoise color of the water is something you really have to see to believe. This exceptional clarity is due to several factors: the fine white sand that reflects light, the ocean currents that keep the water in constant motion and renewal, and the natural protection of the bay.

However, the water temperature was our reality check. We are talking about the Atlantic Ocean, folks, and even though in summer it can reach 18-20°C, it is still considerably colder than Caribbean waters.

The first impression is unforgettable: a bay of calm, transparent, and bluish waters, surrounded by green hills that seem to embrace it.

The Secret Spot at praia de Figueirinha: Walk to the Right

Here comes our golden tip, the one that truly made the difference in our experience: if you want to find tranquility and practically have the beach all to yourselves, walk to the right (facing the sea). After about 10-15 minutes of walking along the sand and over some rocks, you will discover sections of the beach that are almost deserted and are a true paradise.

Natural viewpoints and nearby trails

If you want to see the beach from above, there are several viewpoints with spectacular panoramic vistas. From the Miradouro de Portinho da Arrábida, you can take postcard-worthy photos, and if you’re up for a hike, the Serra da Arrábida Trail rewards you with a blend of mountain and sea that is hard to beat.

The surroundings of the Parque Natural da Serra da Arrábida

The Magic of the Parque Natural da Serra da Arrábida
The Parque Natural da Serra da Arrábida is a protected reserve that stretches for over 10,800 hectares between Sesimbra and Setúbal. This unique ecosystem hosts exceptional biodiversity, with Mediterranean vegetation that contrasts dramatically with the deep blue of the Atlantic Ocean. The mountains of the Serra descend steeply towards the sea, creating spectacular cliffs and sheltered coves.
What makes this area special is the combination of microclimates that create unique conditions. The natural protection of the mountains creates calmer and clearer waters than in other parts of the Portuguese coast. In addition, the southern orientation of the beaches allows them to receive sun throughout the day, resulting in slightly warmer temperatures for both air and water.

Activities to do in Playa Figueirinha

Beyond swimming and sunbathing, there is plenty to do in this paradisiacal corner.

Snorkeling, kayaking, and paddle surfing in turquoise waters

The clear and calm waters are ideal for snorkeling or renting a kayak. On days with little wind, you can paddle along the coast and discover small hidden coves. There are also stands that rent paddle surf boards, a fun way to explore the sea.

Relaxing under the sun: quiet and family zones

A tip we learned: if you’re looking for more peace, walk to the right of the beach. The further you get from the main sector, the fewer people there are, and the environment becomes almost virgin. A corner of total tranquility.

Photography and nature: the most Instagrammable side of Arrábida

Every corner seems designed for the camera: the contrasts between the green of the mountains, the blue of the sea, and the white of the sand are hypnotic. We recommend going early or at sunset to take advantage of the best light.

Nearby beaches you can’t miss

The Arrábida area is a true corridor of paradisiacal beaches.

Galapos, Galapinhos, and Creiro: the paradise circuit

From Figueirinha, there are free shuttles to other beaches like Galapos, Galapinhos, and Creiro. They all have their charm, but Galapinhos stands out for its wilder atmosphere and almost untouched beauty. If you have time, it’s worth exploring them.

Praia de Galapos: Wild Nature

Galapos is the wildest and most preserved of the accessible beaches. The shuttle drops you at a point from where you have to walk about 15-20 minutes along a well-marked but natural trail. This walk is an experience in itself, passing through typical Mediterranean vegetation with sea views.

Praia de Galapinhos: The Most Beautiful Beach in Europe

Galapinhos has the honor of having been voted the most beautiful beach in Europe in 2017 by the channel European Best Destinations. Access requires going down a fairly steep staircase (about 180 steps), which keeps some visitors away but also means you’ll have to climb all that at the end of the day. We didn’t get to visit Galapinhos during our trip; it’s left for next time.

Praia do Creiro: Absolute Tranquility

Creiro is the option for those looking for the most tranquility. It is the least known of the four main beaches on the shuttle circuit, making it a perfect refuge to escape the crowds. Access also requires a moderate hike.

How the free shuttles from Figueirinha work

During the summer, the free transport system operates between the main beaches to reduce traffic and protect the environment. You just have to wait at the marked stop and enjoy the coastal tour.

Near the beach, there are some restaurants with sea views, ideal for trying fresh fish or a “dourada grelhada”. There are also small beach bars (chiringuitos) where you can buy drinks, sandwiches, or a coffee.

If you prefer something simpler, you can bring your own picnic. There are shaded areas near the forest, perfect for eating in peace. Just make sure to take your trash back with you, let’s take care of this paradise!

Local Gastronomy: Flavors of Setúbal

Visiting Figueirinha is an excellent excuse to explore the gastronomy of Setúbal, one of the most interesting culinary regions in Portugal.

The absolute specialty is choco frito (fried cuttlefish), prepared in a crispy way and typically served with salad and rice. It is a simple but delicious dish that you will find in almost every local restaurant. Another must is the caldeirada, a fish and seafood stew that reflects the seafaring tradition of the region.

The wines of Setúbal also deserve attention. The region produces excellent wines, particularly the Moscatel de Setúbal, a fortified sweet wine perfect as an aperitif or dessert. If you have the chance, visit one of the local wineries for tastings.

The Azeitão cheese, a creamy sheep’s milk cheese with protected designation of origin, is another local treasure. It is typically served with fresh bread and is the perfect accompaniment to a glass of wine. Look for it in local markets or traditional restaurants.

Don’t forget to try the pastries of Setúbal, especially the Azeitão cakes, which are rolled tarts with a sweet egg yolk filling. They are addictive and perfect for a beach picnic.

Useful tips for visiting Playa de Figueirinha

Best time to go and ideal weather

The best time is from June to September, when the weather is warm and the sea has its best color.

High Season vs. Low Season at Playa Figueirinha

The high season runs from mid-June to the end of August, coinciding with the European summer holidays. During these months, especially on weekends, Figueirinha can get quite crowded. The advantage is that all services are fully operational, shuttles run more frequently, and the atmosphere is livelier. But even in spring or autumn, the place maintains its charm and there are fewer people.

We visited during mid-season (May) and it was perfect: pleasant weather, fewer people, and more reasonable prices for accommodation. The months of May, early June, and September offer the best balance between good weather and fewer tourists. The air temperature is warm and the water, although cold, is tolerable.

The low season (October to April) has its own charms. The beaches are practically deserted, perfect for reflective walks and photography. However, many services close, the weather can be unpredictable, and the water is decidedly cold (12-15°C). The shuttles between beaches typically do not operate off-season.

Where to park and what to bring to the beach

There is a free parking lot at the entrance, although it fills up quickly. We recommend arriving early. Don’t forget an umbrella, sunscreen, and water (there is little natural shade).

How to avoid the crowds and find your corner of peace

Our secret: walk to the far right of the beach. In a few minutes, the bustle disappears and it’s just you, the sea, and the sound of the wind. A corner that seems all yours.
