Why Annecy is one of the most beautiful cities in France
Annecy is not a destination you just pass through. It is one of those cities that one discovers almost by accident —perhaps on the way to the Alps or returning from Geneva— and that end up being the most memorable part of the trip. The city is located at the northern end of the great lake, surrounded by mountains that offer spectacular views in any season of the year.
What caught our attention the most from the first day was the quality of the lake water: a transparency and a blue-turquoise color that we did not expect to find. In fact, Lake Annecy is considered the cleanest lake on the continent.
Add to that an old town with canals that remind one (distance notwithstanding) of a miniature Venice, a gastronomy that blends the best of Savoyard cuisine with French influence, and an atmosphere that is lively without being chaotic. Annecy works for travelers of all kinds: families, couples, backpackers, or digital nomads like us who needed a quiet base for over a week.
How to get to Annecy and get around the city
Annecy is very well connected. From Paris, there are direct trains in about 3 hours and 45 minutes with the TGV INOUI, which makes it a perfect weekend getaway or the start of a longer journey through the French Alps. If you are coming from Geneva, the drive is just 45 minutes by highway, and there are also frequent buses between both cities.
We arrived by car, and that was our great advantage for exploring the surroundings. Having a car in Annecy has its pros and cons: the historic center is mostly pedestrian-only, and parking can be expensive and difficult to find in high season. However, to visit the lake at its different points, nearby villages like Yvoire, or take a trip to the Alps, the car is very useful.
Within the city, the best way to get around is on foot or by bicycle. There is a very accessible electric bike rental network and a bike path that borders the lake. For public transport, city buses cover the city and part of the lake area well.
The old town of Annecy: the heart of the city
The main thing to see in Annecy is “The Vieil Annecy“ —the old town— it is the place where you will want to spend most of your time. Its cobblestone streets, colorful houses with geraniums in the windows, and the canals that run through them create a unique atmosphere that is difficult to describe without having experienced it. We walked through it at different times of the day —at noon with the sun beating down on the canal, slightly cloudy, at sunset with the warm colors, and each time it was different.
The main canal is called Thiou and is born directly from the lake, passing right under the Palais de l’Île before flowing between the old medieval buildings.
In summer, this canal is the epicenter of social life: restaurant terraces on the sides, tourists taking photos from the bridges, locals having a coffee.
You can’t miss crossing the Bridge of Loves (Pont des Amours), which connects the old town with the Pâquier gardens and from which you get one of the best views of the lake with the mountains in the background.

The Palais de l’Île: the icon of Annecy
If there is a symbol of Annecy, it is the Palais de l’Île (Palace of the Island). This 12th-century medieval building is literally built on a small islet in the middle of the Thiou canal, with a “ship’s bow shape”. It was a prison, the prefect’s residence, a courthouse, and a mint throughout its history.
Today it serves as a local history museum that is worth visiting to understand the evolution of the city. But even if you don’t go inside, the exterior view from any of the nearby bridges already justifies the visit.
The Château d’Annecy: panoramic views from above
Dominating the old town from above is the medieval castle of Annecy, which dates back to the 12th century although it was expanded and renovated in several later periods. The access on foot from the rue de la Tour takes about 10 minutes from the canal level and the effort is absolutely worth it: the panoramic view of the lake, the rooftops of the old town, and the surrounding mountains is extraordinary. Inside the castle is the Regional Museum of Lake Annecy, with permanent exhibitions on geology, regional art, and the history of Savoy.

Lake Annecy: unmissable in any season of the year
The lake is, without a doubt, the big star of Annecy. With 14.6 km long and about 3 km wide, it offers infinite possibilities depending on the time of year and the time available. In summer, the water temperature rises enough to take a dip —especially in the northern sector— and the public beaches fill up with families and young people. The Champ-de-Mars beach, next to the city center, is the most accessible and always lively.
As we went at the beginning of May, it was cool and the water was frozen. It was not for swimming.
For water sports lovers, the lake offers kayaking, paddleboarding, sailing, windsurfing, and canoeing. There are also companies that organize boat trips to tour the shore and reach small villages with beaches like Talloires or Duingt, which from land look like postcards and from the water even more so.
There is a cycling route that circles the entire lake, it is about 40 km long and can be great to do in one day with electric bikes. If you prefer something shorter, the stretch between Annecy and Talloires (about 12 km one way) is beautiful and very manageable.
We took the opportunity to walk and have a picnic on the shore of the lake, especially on the east side, which is less touristy and where the natural landscape is more preserved.

If the old town is the historic heart of Annecy, the Pâquier gardens are its green lung. This public park of more than 8 hectares extends between the lake and the Vassé canal, offering a space of respite in the center of the city.
On Sunday mornings it is a classic to see it full of local families: children playing, people jogging, old people on the benches looking at the lake.
From the park, there are direct views towards the lake and towards the château, especially photogenic at sunrise or sunset. It is also the starting point for the pedestrian promenade that borders the lake shore to the east. In summer, bars and food stalls are set up in the park, and occasionally there are events, concerts, and open-air markets.

Savoyard gastronomy: what to eat in Annecy
Annecy is a city for eating well. The local Savoyard cuisine is hearty, generous, and perfectly adapted to the mountain climate: lots of cheese, lots of cream, lots of potatoes.
The typical dishes of the region that you must try are the fondue savoyarde (melted cheese with bread), the raclette (melted cheese over potatoes and cured meats), the tartiflette (potato gratin with Reblochon, bacon, and onion), and the gratin dauphinois.
To eat seated, the streets of the old town are full of restaurants, but you have to distinguish those that work with local products from those that live off tourism.
A general recommendation: if the menu is written only in English and has large photos, keep walking. The best places usually have chalkboards with the daily menu written by hand.

Yvoire: the medieval village on the shores of Lake Geneva
Yvoire is one of those places that you find hard to believe exists. A small medieval village of barely 800 inhabitants is located on the shores of Lake Geneva (also known as Lac Léman), about 40 km from Annecy. Its cobblestone streets, stone houses, and 14th-century castle make up one of the best-preserved medieval ensembles in France. It is on the list of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France (The Most Beautiful Villages of France).

From Yvoire, you can also take the ferry to Nyon (Switzerland) or to Lausanne, making it a very interesting connection point if you plan to cross the lake.

Geneva, Switzerland: 50 minutes from Annecy
Geneva is just 50 minutes away by car from Annecy, making it a very comfortable excursion. The Swiss city surprises with its elegance, its famous water jet (the Jet d’Eau, 140 meters high), the historic Vieille Ville district, the lake, and an international culinary offer of the highest level.
Watch out for the currency exchange: in Switzerland you pay in Swiss francs and everything is considerably more expensive than in France.

Talloires and the southern lake
The southern sector of Lake Annecy, with the villages of Talloires, Doussard, and Faverges, is the quietest and least touristy. The road that borders the lake on this stretch is spectacularly beautiful, especially in autumn when the trees are dyed in warm colors. Talloires has an excellent beach and a beautiful village with a Romanesque church that is worth a visit.

Annecy works well in almost all seasons, although each season has its profile.
- Spring (April-June): our favorite season. The weather is pleasant, the flowers are in full bloom, there are fewer tourists than in summer, and prices are lower. The lake is still fresh for swimming, but the landscape is already spectacular.
- Summer (July-August): high season par excellence. The lake allows for swimming, outdoor life is intense, and the atmosphere is very lively. The downside: crowds and high prices. Booking accommodation well in advance is essential.
- Autumn (September-November): an underrated season. The forest colors are beautiful, tourists are reduced, and the atmosphere becomes more local. The first snows on the peaks add drama to the landscape.
- Winter (December-March): the old town decorated for Christmas is a delight. However, some lake activities are suspended, and the days are short.
