Where is Yvoire and how to get there?
Before starting with the guide, a traveler’s tip: if you are traveling to Europe, make sure to bring good travel insurance for Europe. We never leave without it.
Yvoire is located in the Haute-Savoie department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, in southeastern France. It is on the shores of Lake Geneva, right across from the Swiss city of Lausanne, which makes it an ideal stop if you are doing a tour of Switzerland or the French Alps.
The nearest city with good connectivity is Geneva, just 45 kilometers away.
We visited Yvoire for the day from Annecy, which is undoubtedly the most comfortable base and the one we recommend the most. The distance between Annecy and Yvoire is only 55 kilometers, and by car, you arrive in approximately 45-50 minutes following the D1201 route along the lake.
The journey from Annecy to Yvoire is an experience in itself: the alpine landscape with the lake water appearing between the trees is some of the prettiest scenery we saw in the whole region.
From Annecy, you can reach Yvoire in several ways:
- By car from Annecy: The option we chose and the one we recommend the most. It is about 45-50 minutes along routes that pass through beautiful landscapes of Haute-Savoie.
Other options to reach Yvoire:
- By boat: You can take the boat from Thonon-les-Bains or from Geneva if you are already in that area.
- By bus: From Thonon-les-Bains, there are regional buses that reach the village. It is not the most direct option if you are coming from Annecy, but it works as an alternative if you don’t have a car.
- From Geneva: It is also possible to arrive from Geneva, about 45 kilometers away. But if you have the possibility to stay in Annecy, it is a much more picturesque option with more to see in the surroundings.
The village itself is very small and everything is explored on foot. There is parking at the entrances (some paid in high season), so if you arrive by car, you will have to leave it in the outskirts and enter the historic center on foot.
Things to do in Yvoire: must-see places
Yvoire is a small village that you can walk around quickly, but every corner holds something special, ideal for relaxing. Here we detail the spots you cannot miss if you want to make the most of your day.
The Medieval Castle of Yvoire
The most iconic symbol of the village is, without a doubt, the Château d’Yvoire, a 14th-century medieval castle that dominates the village skyline with its imposing towers. It was built by Amadeus V of Savoy and has remained in the hands of the same noble family for centuries.
Although the interior of the castle is not open to the public, its exterior is absolutely photogenic and the view from its surroundings is among the best in the village. It is worth walking around it to capture different angles.
The Garden of the Five Senses (Jardin des Cinq Sens)
This is, probably, the most special place in Yvoire and one of the most visited attractions in all of Haute-Savoie. The Jardin des Cinq Sens is a recreated medieval garden with a unique philosophy: to stimulate the five senses simultaneously through plants, textures, aromas, sounds, and flavors.
It was created in 1986 and has since won multiple international gardening awards. The tour includes different thematic spaces: the aroma garden, the vegetable labyrinth, the medicinal plant garden, and a terrace with incredible views of Lake Geneva.
Admission has a cost (around 10-12 euros for adults). If you are traveling with children, they will have a lot of fun with the labyrinth.
Important: The garden generally opens from May to September. Check the hours before you go, especially if you are traveling in the off-season. When we went, it was closed.

The Harbor and Views of Lake Geneva
Going down to the harbor of Yvoire is mandatory. It is one of the most picturesque harbors on all of Lake Geneva, with wooden boats, houses with flowers, and that characteristic light that changes depending on the time of day. In the background, the Swiss Alps are visible, and on clear days, the view is absolutely spectacular.
We arrived at noon and the light was perfect for photographs. However, if you can stay until sunset, the visual reward is enormous: the sky is tinged with oranges and pinks over the lake.
Boats to other locations on the lake also depart from the harbor, so if you want to combine Yvoire with a nautical excursion, this is the starting point.
The Narrow Streets of the Medieval Historic Center
Getting lost in the streets of Yvoire is an experience in itself. The 14th-century stone houses with windows and balconies covered in geraniums, hydrangeas, and roses create an atmosphere that seems frozen in time. It is no coincidence that the village is recognized as one of the most beautiful in France.
The main narrow streets are connected by tight passages and internal courtyards. Every turn is a new postcard. We recommend walking without a fixed destination, simply following your instinct and curiosity.
Pay attention to the plaques on the facades, which provide historical information about the oldest houses. You will also find small chapels and niches with religious images that are part of the local tradition. If you like the medieval villages of France, be sure to read our guide on things to do in Eguisheim, Alsace.
The Saint-Pancrace Church
In the heart of the historic center is the Church of Saint-Pancrace, a small but charming medieval church whose history dates back to the 14th century. Its stone facade and bell tower are architectural elements that perfectly complement the village’s setting.
The interior is simple and serene, ideal for a moment of tranquility amidst so much walking. Around the church is a small historical cemetery; a brief visit can be made for the heritage value of its epitaphs and old gravestones.
Flowers everywhere: the hallmark of Yvoire
One of the things that impressed us most upon arriving in Yvoire was the quantity and quality of the flowers. The village has been participating for decades in the Villes et Villages Fleuris contest and has won the top prize multiple times. Each inhabitant takes great care of the geraniums, roses, and bougainvilleas that adorn facades, windows, and pots.
The peak season for floral splendor is between June and September. If you can visit Yvoire in that period, you will find a village literally exploding with color.
Even out of season, Yvoire has a special charm. In autumn, the warm colors of the trees and in winter the quiet atmosphere of the village also have their appeal.
Gastronomy in Yvoire: what to eat and where
The culinary offer in Yvoire revolves around Savoyard cuisine and products from Lake Geneva. Being an alpine region, the dishes are hearty and delicious. Here are some recommendations:
The Fish of Lake Geneva
If there is something you cannot miss trying in Yvoire, it is the fresh fish from the lake. The féra (a type of lake trout) and the perche (perch) are the stars of most local menus. They are usually served as fried fillets with potatoes and salad.
Several restaurants in the village offer these specialties. Prices are consistent with a European tourist destination: expect to spend between 15 and 25 euros per person for a full meal.
Fondue and Raclette
Being an alpine region, fondue and raclette are dishes that will appear on almost all menus. They are perfect for cooler days and for sharing with a partner or group. If you have never tried Savoyard raclette, Yvoire is a good place to start.
Cafes and Ice Cream Shops with Lake Views
For a lighter break, the village has several cafes and ice cream shops where you can take a break with a view of Lake Geneva.
La Creperie d’Yvoire: ideal for grabbing something to go and having a picnic by the lake.
Lake Geneva from Yvoire: water activities and excursions
Yvoire’s privileged position on Lake Geneva offers many possibilities for travelers wanting to do outdoor activities.
- Boat trip: You can take the CGN boats and visit other locations on the lake such as Lausanne, Montreux, or Evian-les-Bains. It is a fantastic way to see the lake from the water and combine destinations.
- Kayak and paddle: In high season, there are companies that rent kayaks and paddleboards near the harbor. The lake is calm, and the landscape with the Alps in the background makes paddling a nearly mystical experience.
- Swimming: There are small beaches near the village where you can take a dip in the lake during the summer months. The water is cold but crystal clear.
The best viewpoints and photo spots
Yvoire is a paradise for photographers and lovers of beautiful images. These are the spots we liked the most:
- The medieval wall with the lake in the background: From the ramparts of the old walls, you get one of the most classic and recognizable views of the village.
- The harbor at sunset: We already mentioned it, but it deserves a separate place on this list. The combination of the sun’s reflection on the water and the wooden boats is simply magical.
- The flowered alleys: Any corner of the historic center can become a great photo, but especially the streets where flowers hang from both sides, forming a natural tunnel of color.
- The terrace of the Garden of the Five Senses: From here, you can see Lake Geneva and the Swiss Alps in the background. It is one of the most impressive panoramas in the village.
When to visit Yvoire: seasons and recommendations
The best time to visit Yvoire is between May and September, when the village is in full floral splendor, the weather is pleasant, and Lake Geneva invites outdoor activities. Summer (July-August) is the high season, with more tourists but also more life.
If you prefer to avoid crowds, May, June, or September are ideal months: the flowers are already in full bloom, the weather is nice, and there are fewer tourists than in mid-August.
Autumn has its particular charm, with warm colors and a quieter atmosphere. In winter, the village is very peaceful, but some restaurants and the garden close, so keep that in mind.
How much time to dedicate to Yvoire
Yvoire is a small village that can be explored in half a day or a full day, depending on how much you like to stop, photograph, and rest. We dedicated a little more than half a day to it and found it the perfect amount of time to see everything calmly, eat well, and enjoy the lake landscape.
If you are traveling to Geneva or Lausanne and want to take a day trip, Yvoire is an excellent choice.
If you are staying in Annecy, like us, Yvoire is a perfect day trip: leave in the morning, visit the village calmly, have lunch with a view of the lake, and return in time to enjoy the afternoon in Annecy. It also works very well combined with a visit to Evian-les-Bains, which is on the way and has its own charm.
Where to sleep in Yvoire
The village has some accommodation options, although the offer is limited due to the size of the place. There are small boutique hotels and guesthouses (chambres d’hôtes) that offer a very authentic experience.
That said, our recommendation is to stay in Annecy and do Yvoire as a day trip. Annecy is a beautiful city, with much more to see and do, and has a much wider range of hotels for all budgets. Also, the drive between Annecy and Yvoire is a pleasure in itself. If you prefer to stay closer to Lake Geneva, Thonon-les-Bains (10 km from Yvoire) is also a valid option with more available accommodations. If you are putting together an itinerary for northeastern France, combine it with our guide on things to do in Strasbourg, which is a few hours away.
