The easiest and most convenient way to reach Quebec is by plane. Jean Lesage International Airport is located just 20 minutes from the city center. For a more picturesque experience, consider traveling by train from Montreal, or by bus from other cities in Canada.

A fact we loved: the decorations and lights on this street remain until March, so even if you travel after the holidays, you will find it just as magical.

A historic square that seems frozen in time: stone houses, illuminated windows, soft music… and a huge Christmas tree that dominates the whole scene, in front of the Notre-Dame-des-Victoires Church. In the same square is one of the Maison Smith branches, a local café perfect for warming up with a hot chocolate or a special coffee while watching the Christmas bustle through the window.

You don’t need to be a guest to enter and enjoy the magical decorations inside: at Christmas, the lobby is filled with giant trees (more than 20 throughout the hotel!) and lights everywhere. Ideal for photos.

Go sledding on the Au 1884 Toboggan (Dufferin Terrace)

Right next to the Château Frontenac, on the historic Dufferin Terrace, one of the city’s oldest attractions operates: the Au 1884 toboggan run, active since that very year. You slide downhill reaching up to 70 km/h with the Saint Lawrence River in the background: pure winter adrenaline in the heart of the historic center.

• Price: approx. 4 CAD per ride (one of the cheapest plans in the city).
• Season: depends on the snow, normally from December to mid-March.
• Tip: during Christmas holidays and weekends it gets crowded; and some days it may close due to weather, so it is advisable to check their social media before going. We found it closed when we visited Quebec, it remained on our to-do list for next time!

If you have a few days, visiting the Montmorency Falls is wonderful. Did you know they are 30 meters higher than Niagara Falls? The falls have a height of 83 meters.

The Parc de la Chute-Montmorency is a spectacular historic site that offers an impressive view of the waterfall. There is a bridge that passes right over it, you can feel its power! (it is a short path, don’t be afraid of the cold). It also has several walking trails. In winter, the frozen spray forms the famous “sugar loaf” of ice at the foot of the falls.

There are not many cafés or places to eat in the surroundings: McDonalds / IGA in Boischatel (supermarket).

-Uber/Taxi is the easiest; otherwise, bus 800 (Chute-Montmorency) in approx. 45 min drops you off near the entrance. The ticket is purchased with cash only on the bus (bring the exact change, no change is given).

Visit the Hôtel de Glace, the ice hotel in Quebec

About 20-30 minutes from the center (in Valcartier), the Hôtel de Glace, the only ice hotel in America, is built every winter. It is raised from scratch every year with thousands of ice blocks and tons of snow, with a different theme in each edition: sculpted rooms, a bar with ice glasses, an indoor slide, and even a chapel where weddings are celebrated.

We didn’t get to go, but other travelers recommended it to us. You don’t need to stay overnight: you can visit during the day by paying an entrance fee, and during the Christmas season, it is specially decorated. It normally opens from late December/January until March, so if you travel for New Year’s or after the holidays, it is a great plan.

Tip: dress warmly in layers, inside the temperature is around -3°C to -5°C constant.
