How to get to Hallstatt from Vienna, Salzburg or Graz

Getting to Hallstatt is part of the charm. From Vienna, the easiest way is to take a train to Attnang-Puchheim and from there another one to Hallstatt Bahnhof, on the other side of the lake. Then you cross on a ferry that drops you right in front of the village —an epic, movie-worthy arrival 🎬.

From Salzburg, the trip is shorter (about two and a half hours by train), and if you are coming from Graz or Innsbruck, it is worth renting a car to enjoy the Alpine scenery.

We chose to rent a car and drive from Salzburg to Hallstatt (it took us about 1:30 h, 75 km), and honestly it was one of the best experiences of the trip: watching the village appear between the mountains is unforgettable.

Important: keep in mind that you can’t use the car in Hallstatt itself; it stays in the parking lot.

Where to stay in Hallstatt: lake views or the heart of the village

Spending the night in Hallstatt is worth every euro. We stayed two nights in a hotel looking straight onto the lake 🏞️ and it was a dream: waking up to the mountains reflected on the water is something we still remember with a smile.

There are options for every budget: from family-run guesthouses in the historic center to boutique hotels with terraces facing the lake. Our advice: if you can, stay at least one or two nights. During the day there are tourists, but in the late afternoon the village empties out and you feel an incredible peace.

Things to do in Hallstatt: the must-see places

Even though it is a small village, Hallstatt is full of corners that look like a postcard. Here are the ones we loved the most 👇

1. The old town: a stroll among fairy-tale houses and charming little streets

Getting lost in the streets of Hallstatt is a pleasure. The wooden houses decorated with flowers, the little staircases, the balconies and the sound of the lake in the background create a unique atmosphere. We recommend wandering with no plan, camera in hand, and letting the beauty of the place carry you along.

2. The Market Square (Marktplatz)

The heart of the village. Surrounded by pastel-colored buildings, cafés and little shops, it is ideal for a coffee or an Austrian beer while you watch local life go by. If you travel in summer, there are often fairs and cultural events.

3. Hallstatt Church and the Bone House (Beinhaus)

One of the most curious spots in the village. The bone house keeps painted skulls from the 18th century, a local tradition that surprises and fascinates in equal measure. From the church you also get beautiful views of the lake.

4. The Skywalk viewpoint: the most impressive views of the lake

This viewpoint, 350 meters above the village, offers a stunning panorama of Hallstatt and the Hallstätter See. You can walk up or take the funicular. We went early, when the sun was just starting to light up the lake, and it was magical 🌅.

5. Lake Hallstatt (Hallstätter See): out on the water in an electric boat

An experience we recommend 100%. We rented a little electric boat and cruised its amazing lake for an hour. From the water, the village looks even more charming, from a whole new perspective. Ideal for photos and for relaxing for a while.

6. The salt mines (Salzwelten Hallstatt)

Hallstatt owes its historical fame to its salt mines, the oldest in the world. The tour includes tunnels, wooden slides and projections that tell how salt was mined more than 7,000 years ago. Highly recommended, especially if you are traveling with kids.

7. The Hallstatt funicular and the Rudolfsturm viewpoint

The funicular takes you up to the Skywalk area, but you can also go up to the Rudolfsturm, an old defensive tower turned into a restaurant with a spectacular view. Perfect for lunch with a panorama included.

8. Hallstatt in the morning and at sunset: the most magical moments

We loved seeing how the village changes with the light. Early in the morning, when there are no tourists, Hallstatt feels suspended in time. And at sunset, the golden reflection on the lake is simply unforgettable.

Things to do around Hallstatt

Hallstatt is a little gem in itself, but the surrounding area is also full of places worth seeing. If you have a car or a few extra days, here are some stops we loved 👇

Lake Gosausee and the Dachstein glacier

Just 20 minutes away by car is Lake Gosausee, one of the most striking landscapes in the Salzkammergut, with the Dachstein glacier reflected in it. There are several trails that follow the shore, and if the day is clear, you can see the mountains perfectly mirrored on the water.

Bad Ischl: the imperial town near Hallstatt

This small spa town was where Empress Sisi and Emperor Franz Joseph came to rest. Today it is ideal for a quiet afternoon, a visit to its thermal baths or a Viennese coffee at the famous Zauner pastry shop, founded in 1832. An Austrian classic.

Scenic drive through the Salzkammergut region

If you enjoy driving, don’t miss a mini road trip around the region. The roads wind between lakes, green meadows and mountains. Some places worth a stop: St. Wolfgang, Gmunden and Traunsee. It all looks like an Alpine postcard 🌄.

Where to eat in Hallstatt: flavors of the Salzkammergut

The food in Hallstatt is as charming as its scenery. It may be a small village, but it has some really delicious options.

Some typical local dishes we recommend:

  • Wiener schnitzel (the Austrian breaded cutlet)
  • Trout from the lake
  • Apple strudel

A tip: if you travel in high season, it is worth booking a table in advance, especially for dinner.

Practical tips for visiting Hallstatt

Visiting Hallstatt is easy, but a few details can make the experience so much better 👇

  • Best time to go: spring and fall are ideal (fewer tourists, pleasant weather).
  • Recommended length: at least 1 full day, although ideally 2 nights to enjoy it without rushing.
  • Currency: euro (€). Almost everywhere accepts cards, but bring some cash.
  • Language: German is spoken, although most people understand English.
  • Connectivity: there is good Wi-Fi in most places to stay and cafés.
  • Useful apps: Google Maps, the ÖBB Train App (for trains) and Komoot for hiking.

And a personal tip: avoid the big half-day tours from Salzburg or Vienna. They all arrive at the same time and the village gets packed. If you can, stay and enjoy Hallstatt early in the morning or at sunset, when the calm returns.

How many days to stay in Hallstatt and how to plan your itinerary

Many people do a day trip, but we think Hallstatt deserves at least two nights.

Suggested itinerary:

  • Day 1: arrival, a stroll through the old town and along the lake, dinner with a view.
  • Day 2: salt mines + Skywalk + a boat ride on the lake.
  • Day 3 (optional): a trip to Gosausee or Bad Ischl before continuing your journey.

If you love photography or want to disconnect, even three days won’t feel like too many. There is something very special about watching the light on the lake change throughout the day ☀️🌙.

Hallstatt in spring, summer, fall and winter: every season has its magic

  • Spring: our favorite season 🌸. The weather is mild, there are fewer tourists and everything is in bloom.
  • Summer: ideal for outdoor activities, although there are more visitors. Book your accommodation well ahead.
  • Fall: the golden colors of the forest make the village look even more magical.
  • Winter: it looks like a snowy nativity scene 🎄. It is the season of Christmas markets and snow on the mountains.

Every season has its charm, so any time is a good time to fall in love with Hallstatt.

Photography in Hallstatt: the best viewpoints

📸 Must-visit photo spots:

  1. The classic view of the village from the south side of the lake (the most famous postcard).
  2. The Skywalk viewpoint, with all of Hallstatt at your feet.
  3. From the electric boat, with the village reflected on the water.
  4. The church and the cemetery, with the lake in the background.
  5. The main street at sunrise, when everything is empty.

Photo tip: if you want to avoid the crowds, get up early. Around 7 am the village is practically empty and the light is perfect.
