Why visit Graz at Christmas
From the moment we stepped into Graz at Christmas (Austria 🇦🇹), we felt the city transform. Warm lights, the scent of spices and mulled wine floating in the air, and every corner of the Old Town with its own Advent story. History and Christmas tradition in Graz
Christmas tradition in Graz intertwines religious and popular elements. One of the most unique symbols is its ice nativity scene (Eiskrippe), which has been presented every year in the Landhaus courtyard since 1996: a sculpture carved in ice with human-scale figures, the work of Finnish artist Kimmo Frosti and his team, who work with more than 35 tons of crystal-clear ice. At night, illuminated, it is something unique.
Graz’s Christmas markets form a compact network called «Advent der kurzen Wege» (Advent of short distances): practically all the markets and attractions are close enough to walk from one to another without the need for transport. Celebrating Christmas in Austria from Graz is, therefore, very comfortable and familiar.

Beyond the markets, these are the places that, for us, you cannot miss in Graz:
- Hauptplatz, the main square of the historic center (at Christmas, with the tree and the lights over the Town Hall).
- Schlossberg: the hill with the fortress and the best views of the city. You can go up by elevator or funicular, or walk up for free.
- Uhrturm, the clock tower, symbol of Graz. A must-see.
- Kunsthaus Graz, the modern art museum with its striking architecture (the «friendly alien»).
- Murinsel, the modern design platform on the Mur river.
- St. Giles Cathedral and the Mausoleum.
- Graz Opera House.
- Landhaus and Landeszeughaus: in its courtyard is the ice nativity scene, and the historic armory is the largest in the world.
- Glockenspiel: the clock tower with figures that dance three times a day (11:00 AM, 3:00 PM, and 6:00 PM).
- Walk along Herrengasse avenue and get lost in the little streets of the historic center.

- «Kastner & Öhler», the multi-story department store (TIP: free public restrooms).
If you have more time, you can go a bit further from the center: the Augarten park by the river, Eggenberg Palace (reached by tram, line 1), or the Basilica of Mariatrost.

Map of Graz Christmas markets and attractions
Map Source: Graz Tourismus (+ Info)
As you can see on the map, almost everything is concentrated in the Old Town and its surroundings: you can visit most of the markets by walking on a single trip.
Our tour of the Graz Christmas markets
We visited them all on foot over a couple of days, stopping to eat something at each one. We tell you what each area has:
Main market in Hauptplatz (main square)
The Hauptplatz Christmas market is the heart of Christmas in Graz and the most visited. Dozens of craft stalls, typical food, and Christmas decorations under the historic Town Hall facade, with the large illuminated tree and a carousel for kids.
The most striking thing is the Advent calendar projection on the facade of the municipal building: every night one more window is lit, transforming the front into a giant calendar. We stayed until dark to see it with the lights… and it is very much worth it.
Franciscan district: the oldest market and children’s fair
The Altgrazer Christkindlmarkt, next to the Franciscan church, is the oldest market in Graz and we liked it a lot: it has a more cozy and traditional atmosphere, with handmade decorations, Thuringian-style tree ornaments, and products from the gourmet regions of Styria (jams, gingerbread, wooden toys).
Next door, in front of the church, is the Kinderadvent: the children’s fair with a carousel, a nostalgic Ferris wheel, and a giant snowman. If you are traveling with children, it is a mandatory stop.
Eisernes Tor and the Schmiedgasse Adventlounge
The Eisernes Tor market is on the edge of the historic center, where there was once an iron gate (that’s what its name means), next to the Mariensäule column. It is more intimate and quiet, designed to return to the original meaning of Advent. A nice detail: its stalls are usually run by charities, so what you spend there supports solidarity projects in Austria.
The Schmiedgasse Adventlounge, a few meters away, is more of a resting space than a massive market: Advent houses with special punches and lounge-style corners to sit in. Ideal for a break between walks.
Färberplatz: the craft market
The Färberplatz craft market is a mandatory stop if you like design and manual work: ceramics, looms, glass, wood, metal, and unique pieces by local artists, not mass-produced products. There is usually live music and workshops for children. An excellent place to buy different gifts.

Mehlplatz and Glockenspielplatz
The Mehlplatz market is steps away from the shopping street Herrengasse and stands out for its punch and mulled wine stalls with original creations, plus homemade waffles and crafts.
The one at Glockenspielplatz is small but with a lot of charm: it is right in front of the famous Glockenspiel, so you can combine the visit with the moment the figures come out to dance (11:00 AM, 3:00 PM, and 6:00 PM). Here everything revolves around Styria: sweets, crafts, and local customs, with visits from St. Nicholas and Krampus.
Karmeliterplatz: lights with a view of the Uhrturm
The Weihnacht am Karmeliterplatz is one of the prettiest markets to visit at night: it has light projections, gourmet products, live music, and a privileged view of the illuminated clock tower. Many travelers highlight it as one of the most atmospheric in the city.
Südtiroler Platz and Mariahilferplatz: the markets on the other side of the river
Crossing the Mur are two of our favorites. The Christkindlmarkt at Südtiroler Platz, behind the Kunsthaus museum, we liked quite a lot: rustic atmosphere around the Steirerhütte, with the largest painted tree ball and a historic sled.
At Mariahilferplatz operates the Winter Wonderlend, with more food options, low-volume alternative music, and light projections on the Mariahilferkirche church. If you are looking for a slightly more relaxed atmosphere, this is your place.
Grieskindlmarkt at Nikolaiplatz
The Grieskindlmarkt is committed to sustainability: fair trade regional gifts, mulled wine, Christmas cookies, apple strudel, and tarte flambée, all homemade. A neighborhood market with a great vibe.
The «Aufsteirern» market on the Schlossberg (hill)
One of the most memorable experiences of Graz at Christmas is going up to the Aufsteirern market, installed in the Kasematten (the ancient casemates of the fortress) on top of the hill, with spectacular views of the illuminated city.
In 2026 it runs from November 20 to December 20; in previous years it only opened from Friday to Sunday, so check the exact days before going up. You can arrive on foot or by funicular. One fact: here the mug deposit is usually more expensive than in the rest of the markets (about 5 EUR against 2 EUR), but the enameled mugs are precious. Our advice: combine the visit with the sunset over Graz before going down to the center to continue touring.
Notable Christmas attractions in Graz
Beyond the markets, Graz displays unique attractions at Christmas:
- Ice Nativity Scene in Landhaushof (Eiskrippe): from November 28, 2026. At night, illuminated, it is one of the postcards of the city.
- Graz Winter World: the large ice skating rink (about 3,000 m²) at the Landessportzentrum on Jahngasse, at the foot of the Schlossberg, with skate rental, curling, and events. Open from mid-November until the end of January.
- Projection of the Advent calendar on the Rathaus (Town Hall): every night a window is lit. Ideal for night photos.
- Krippenweg (Nativity scene path): a tour of shop windows and small decorated mangers between Stempfergasse and the Diocesan Museum.
- Advent train and tram: the tourist train tours the Old Town daily from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM (4 EUR adults, 2 EUR children), and the decorated historic tram runs on weekends.
- Krampus and Perchten Parades: folk shows with masks, music, and processions. They are impressive, but they are part of the alpine tradition.
- Christmas concerts and workshops in churches and museums, which change every year.
How much does Graz at Christmas cost: prices of food, drink, and transport
One of the most common questions is how much money to bring for the markets. The good news: entry to all markets and the ice nativity scene is free, and food prices are reasonable for Austria. These are the reference values:
| Typical Expense | Approximate Price |
|---|---|
| Glühwein or Punsch (glass) | 3 – 5 EUR |
| Mug deposit (returned to you) | 2 EUR (5 EUR at Aufsteirern) |
| Food at stalls (sausages, waffles, sweets) | 5 – 12 EUR |
| Tram or bus (1-hour ticket, zone 101) | ~ 3.30 EUR |
| 24-hour transport ticket | ~ 7 EUR |
| Advent Train (Old Town tour) | 4 EUR adults / 2 EUR children |
| Entry to markets and ice nativity scene | Free |
In our case, with about 20 to 25 EUR per person per day we ate and drank everything at the markets without looking too much at the price. If you collect the themed mugs (you can keep them by sacrificing the deposit), add that extra.
Transport in Graz during Christmas
Getting around Graz during the Christmas season is very comfortable if you know a few secrets:
We always use the tram: it passes very often and the ticket is bought at the machine inside the tram itself. The 1-hour ticket is around 3.30 EUR (fares rose slightly in July 2026). We use it, for example, to go back and forth from the accommodation to the central station (Graz Hauptbahnhof), and from there you also get to the historic center.
Transport TIP: inside the historic center, at stops marked as AltstadtBim, the tram is free. There are few stops (for example, lines 1 and 7 between Südtiroler Platz and Kaiser-Josef-Platz), but they work. Also, on Advent Saturdays, public transport is often free on certain lines.
Thanks to the «Advent of short distances», walking is almost always better between markets. To go up to the Schlossberg you can use the elevator or the funicular if you don’t want the walk. And if you are traveling by car, leave it in a peripheral parking lot: many areas of the center are pedestrian or have restricted access during the Christmas season.
Notable Christmas attractions
Beyond the markets, Graz deploys a series of unique attractions at Christmas that you shouldn’t miss:
- Ice Nativity Scene at Landhaus (Eiskrippe): it is one of the best-known ice sculptures in the Christmas world, with human-sized figures illuminated at night.
- Ice Rink / Grazer Winterwelt: a mega ice skating rink (approximately 2,500 m²) that opens from mid-November until January.
- Projection of the Advent calendar on the Rathaus (Town Hall): every night a window of the giant calendar is illuminated, ideal for night photos.
- Krippenweg (Nativity scene path): a tour of shop windows and small decorated mangers between Stempfergasse and the Diocesan Museum.
- Adventzug / Advent-Bim: special tram or disguised small train that runs Christmas routes through the city.
- Krampus / Perchten Parades: traditional folk shows that combine spectral masks with music and processions.
- Random events: Christmas workshops, concerts in churches, Christmas readings, and micro-shows are added to the repertoire each year. (Graz Tourismus)
These attractions add cultural depth to the Christmas stroll and make Graz at Christmas more than just markets.
Gastronomy and typical Christmas drinks
The gastronomy in the Graz markets is an essential part of the experience:
- Glühwein (spiced mulled wine): a must in almost all stalls. At Hauptplatz you will also see Feuerzangenbowle, the version with flamed rum.
- Punsch: hot punch in a thousand variations, the star drink of the Austrian Advent.
- Leberkäse, Bratwurst and local sausages: the quick classics of the stalls.
- Christmas sweets: Lebkuchen (gingerbread), Weihnachtskekse (festive cookies) and Stollen (sweet bread with fruits and spices).
- Styrian specialties: products with pumpkin seed oil, Zotter chocolates, and homemade jams.
The beautiful decorative Mugs: each market has its themed mugs with a deposit; you can collect them by keeping the deposit.
Where to stay to experience Graz at Christmas
A good choice of accommodation makes the difference in the Christmas experience:
- Altstadt (Old Town): the best area if you want to be in the heart of Graz, walking to almost all the markets. It is the one that sells out the fastest.
- Lend and Gries: neighborhoods across the river, 10-15 minutes walk from the center, with a more local atmosphere and more affordable prices. Right there you have the markets of Südtiroler Platz, Mariahilferplatz, and Nikolaiplatz.
- Near the Hauptbahnhof: practical if you arrive by train and move around by tram.
TIP: for Christmas book 2 or 3 months in advance, especially if you travel on a weekend, because demand grows very fast and center prices skyrocket. Choose accommodation with a good tram connection if you stay outside the Old Town.

Tips to enjoy Graz at Christmas
- Bundle up for real: December in Graz is cold; use layers (thermal, coat, scarf, hat, gloves).
- Play with the times: enter the large markets near opening (11:00 AM) to avoid crowds, and return after 5:00 PM, when the lights are more striking.
- Bring a camera: the Rathaus facade with the calendar and the ice nativity scene at night make for spectacular photos.
- Split the markets into two or more days: don’t try to see everything in one; between walks, stop at a café with Christmas decor.
- Watch out for December 24: the markets that open close between 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM, and on the 25th everything is closed.
- Variable climate: keep an umbrella or waterproof jacket handy.
- Check hours by market: some close earlier on specific days or only open on certain days.
- Travel insured: in Austria, private medical care is very expensive; we never travel without our IATI insurance, especially in winter, between colds and icy floors.
An international meeting point: the city’s Christmas fame crossed borders a long time ago. Many travelers arrive looking for Graz Christmas or winter in Graz, and our Italian neighbors 🇮🇹 choose it for a weekend getaway. It’s no coincidence: few cities condense so much Christmas atmosphere in so few blocks.
