How to get to Albi from major cities

Albi is located about 75 km northeast of Toulouse, making it a very accessible getaway from several cities in southern France.

From Toulouse: This is the most common option. There are direct trains that cover the journey in approximately 1 hour. You can also drive via the A68, which takes between 50 minutes and 1 hour depending on traffic.

From Carcassonne: We arrived by car from Cordes-sur-Ciel, which is about 25 km from Albi. Directly from Carcassonne, the drive is about 100 km, taking approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. You can also combine a train ride with a transfer in Toulouse.

From Montpellier or Béziers: Access by car via the A75 and then secondary roads takes about 2 hours. It is not the most direct route, but it can be included in a road trip through the Languedoc.

If you travel by car like us, there are several parking lots in the city. The most convenient for visiting the historic center is Parking Carnot, just a few minutes’ walk from the cathedral.

The old town of Albi is compact and completely walkable. You can cover the main points of interest in a quiet afternoon, although we recommend staying at least a full day to enjoy it without rush.

Sainte-Cécile Cathedral: the most impressive monument in Albi

The Cathédrale Sainte-Cécile is, without a doubt, the symbol of Albi and one of the most extraordinary religious buildings in all of France. Built between the 13th and 15th centuries, this Gothic red brick cathedral is the largest in the world built from that material. Its scale is massive: when you see it for the first time from the square, it’s hard to believe it’s real.

The exterior is austere, almost intimidating, with that reddish tone that dominates the entire city. But the interior is an explosion of color: 15th-century frescoes cover every centimeter of the ceiling, and the flamboyant Gothic choir is one of the best-preserved in Europe. Don’t miss the jubé, the sculpted stone screen that separates the choir from the nave, a jewel of medieval art.

Entry to the cathedral interior is free. Access to the choir has a small cost (around €3-4). It is totally worth it.

The Palais de la Berbie and the Toulouse-Lautrec Museum

Attached to the cathedral, the Palais de la Berbie is a former 13th-century episcopal palace that now houses the Toulouse-Lautrec Museum, dedicated to the painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, born in Albi in 1864.

The museum has the world’s most complete collection of this artist’s works: over 1,000 pieces including paintings, drawings, posters, and prints. If you are interested in art or late 19th-century Paris, this museum is a must-visit. We didn’t walk through the whole thing due to lack of time, but what we saw we found excellent.

The palace gardens, with views of the Tarn River and the cathedral, are perfect for a break. Museum admission is around €8-12 depending on the season.

The Old Bridge: the best view of Albi

The Pont Vieux is an 11th-century medieval bridge that crosses the Tarn River and offers one of the most iconic postcard views of the city: the cathedral and the Palais de la Berbie reflected in the river’s waters. It is one of the oldest medieval bridges in southern France that is still standing.

Crossing it on foot doesn’t take more than 5 minutes, but you’ll surely spend much longer taking photos from different angles. The best light is at golden hour, close to sunset.

The La Madeleine neighborhood and medieval streets

Going down from the cathedral towards the river, the La Madeleine neighborhood is a maze of narrow streets with timber-framed houses (colombages) that contrast with the red brick characteristic of Albi. It is the most picturesque area to get lost without a map, explore artisan shops, and sit in one of the small cafes.

The Place Sainte-Cécile, right in front of the cathedral, and the Place du Vigan, in the heart of the commercial center, are the two main nodes of urban life in Albi.

If you have more than one day in the area, Albi works very well as a base for exploring the surroundings. These are the options that most catch our attention for a future visit:

Cordes-sur-Ciel: the medieval village in the clouds

About 25 km north of Albi, Cordes-sur-Ciel is one of the best-preserved medieval villages in southern France. Built on a hill overlooking the Cérou valley, it was founded in 1222 and today is one of the Plus Beaux Villages de France. We arrived in Albi coming from there, and combining both towns in the same day is perfect.

Castres: the city of tanners

About 40 km south, Castres has a historic center with colorful houses over the Agout river and a Goya museum with a notable collection. It is less touristy than Albi, which makes it an interesting destination for those looking to get off the beaten path.

The Parc Naturel Régional du Haut-Languedoc

For nature lovers, this natural park south of Albi offers hiking, waterfalls, and mountain landscapes less than an hour away by car. In summer, it’s a refreshing alternative to the city heat.

The Tarn River: the natural heart of Albi

One of the things we liked most about Albi was the city’s relationship with its river. The banks of the Tarn are a green and lively space, especially in the spring and summer months, when locals go out to walk, have picnics, and soak up the sun.

If the weather permits, don’t forget to go down to the banks of the Tarn. In summer, there is even a small artificial beach where the locals cool off. The Lices area, between the Pont Vieux and the center, is the most pleasant area to walk along the water.

We did exactly that: we bought varied cheeses, a baguette, pâté, and strawberries at a delicatessen in the center, and set up a picnic on the riverbank. We added our mate —which travels with us everywhere— and it was one of the most enjoyable afternoons of the trip. Simple, quiet, and with an unbeatable view of the cathedral from below.

Where to eat in Albi: the best of local gastronomy

The cuisine of the Tarn is influenced by the Occitan tradition, with heavy use of duck, foie gras, sheep cheeses, and wines from the Gaillac appellation, produced in the vineyards just a few kilometers from the city.

Some dishes and products we recommend looking for:

• Castelnaudary cassoulet: a local version of the classic dish of legumes and confit meats.
• Magret de canard: grilled duck breast, a classic of the French southwest.
• Tarn cheeses: especially Pérail, a soft and creamy sheep cheese.
• Gaillac wines: aromatic whites and structured reds, with good value for money.

To eat well without spending too much, the covered market Marché Couvert d’Albi, open Tuesday to Sunday mornings, is the best place to buy fresh local products. Ideal if you are planning a picnic like ours.

For sit-down dining, the area around Place Sainte-Cécile has several restaurants with good options. Looking for a lunch menu (between €15 and €22) is always the best value in France.

Albi has a continental Mediterranean climate, with hot summers and cold but not extreme winters.

• Spring (April-June): the best time to visit. Pleasant temperatures, gardens in bloom, and fewer tourists than in summer. Ideal for exploring on foot and enjoying the banks of the Tarn.
• Summer (July-August): high season. More tourists, more cultural activity and festivals, but also more heat (it can exceed 35°C). Book accommodation in advance.
• Autumn (September-October): an excellent option. The heat subsides, the Gaillac vineyards are in the middle of harvest, and the colors of the landscape are beautiful.
• Winter (November-March): the city is quiet and prices drop, but some attractions have reduced hours. The weather can be gray and cold.

We visited Albi in April and although it was partly cloudy, the afternoon was very pleasant by the river.
