Brela Beach, in Croatia, was chosen by Forbes magazine as the most beautiful in Europe… and believe us, they aren’t exaggerating. When we arrived from Split and saw that turquoise water among the pine trees, we were left speechless. In this guide, we’ll tell you about the 11 best beaches and places in Brela, where to stay, how to get there, and we’ve left you a map with all the essentials.

We are a couple of Argentine travelers and for over nine years we’ve been traveling the world as digital nomads. We’ve returned to Croatia several times: on one trip we spent almost two months touring the country and its islands, and on another we based ourselves for three nights in Split, from where we escaped for an entire day to this area of the Makarska Riviera. And it is absolutely worth it.

Before we dive in, one detail to keep in mind: since 2023 Croatia uses the euro, so if you have old guidebooks or blogs that talk about kunas, they are already outdated. Another detail: almost all beaches in Brela are pebble beaches, not sand. We explain this in detail below, as it significantly changes what you should carry in your backpack.

Things to do in Brela beach in Croatia

1. Punta Rata, the jewel of Brela beach in Croatia

If there is one image that sums up why Brela is famous worldwide, it’s this one. Punta Rata is about 800 meters northwest of the center and is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful beaches we saw in the entire country. Forbes included it in its top 10 most beautiful beaches on the planet back in 2004, and it also holds the Blue Flag, the distinction that rewards the cleanliness of the water and the environment.

What makes it so special? The water. A turquoise that looks photoshopped but is real, with a light pebble bottom that gives it that color. All around, centuries-old pine trees that reach almost to the shore and give you natural shade (pure gold in the middle of summer). We arrived early, around mid-morning, and you could still walk around peacefully. By noon it was a different story.

2. Kamen Brela, the rock that makes everyone fall in love

In the middle of the sea, right in front of Punta Rata, there is a rock with a pine tree growing on the top. It is called Kamen Brela (or “the rock of Brela”) and it is the symbol of this entire place. You will recognize it immediately because it appears on every postcard and in every brochure for Croatia.

It is one of those spots that steals your heart the moment you see it. We took about fifty photos from the same angle, hahaha, we couldn’t leave. The best thing is to approach it when the sun sets a little: the light hits it from the side and it looks incredible. If you’re up for it, the water around it is perfect for a dive with a snorkel, because you can see quite a few fish.

Did you know…?

The iconic symbol of Brela, known as Kamen Brela, is a natural rock formation on which ancient pine trees grow, surrounded by crystal clear waters.

3. Podrače Beach, the most photogenic cove

Walking north from Punta Rata, along the path that skirts the coast, you reach Podrače, another of the beaches you can’t miss. Many consider it the most photogenic cove in the entire Makarska Riviera, and we truly understand why: the combination of pine trees, rocks, and transparent water is cinematic.

It is well equipped, with a small bar nearby for a cold beer or an ice cream after a swim. One of the things to do in Brela is exactly this: go jumping from cove to cove along the coastal promenade, without rushing, stopping where you like. Every corner looks like a private hideout.

4. The Šetalište promenade, from cove to cove among pines

Brela has a beautiful seaside promenade of several kilometers, known as the Šetalište (or “Longo Mare”), which connects almost all of its beaches. It is flat, shaded, and skirts the sea the entire time. For us, walking it was one of the best parts of the day.

You pass through hidden coves, rocks, pine forests, and viewpoints that appear out of nowhere. Every so often you get the urge to jump into the water. If you visit Brela, even for just a few hours, do this walk by all means. It’s free, it’s peaceful, and it shows you the best side of the place. In our case, we did it in the mid-afternoon, when the heat subsides a bit.

5. The center of Brela and the church of St. Nicholas

The town itself is small but charming. It has a center with bars, restaurants, and a nice view of the marina, where you can see little boats and the occasional yacht. It is not an imposing historic center, but it is a beautiful walk and has a relaxed Mediterranean vibe.

Among the little streets you will find the church of St. Nicholas (Sveti Nikola), a simple little chapel with a lot of local flavor. We aren’t the type to go into every church unless it’s unmissable, but this one is on the way and adds to getting to know the quieter side of town, away from the beach hustle.

6. Soline Beach, ideal for families with children

Towards the north of the town stretches Soline, one of the most comfortable beaches if you are traveling with family. It has easy access to shops and restaurants, a great playground, and even a floating water park right in front. Many travelers choose it for this reason, because the little ones have entertainment for a while.

The bottom is pebbles, like almost all of them in Brela, but the entry to the water is gentle. If you are looking for a place with services at hand and little hassle to get there, this is one of the most practical options in the area.

7. Vrulja Cove, the secret hideout of Brela

For the more adventurous there is Vrulja, a hidden cove that can only be reached by walking for a while over the rocks or directly by boat. Its name comes from “vrulja”, which in Croatian refers to a freshwater spring that bubbles up near the shore. The result? The water there is noticeably colder and of stunning transparency.

We didn’t make it to Vrulja on our one-day visit, but many travelers recommend it as one of the most pristine corners of the entire Riviera. If you have time and the desire to walk, they say the reward is worth it. Just keep in mind: bring water, comfortable shoes, and don’t be in a rush.

8. Jakiruša Beach, at the western end

In the westernmost part of Brela is Jakiruša, a more secluded and quiet cove, perfect if you want to escape the crowds of Punta Rata. It is made of stones, with its pine shade and a very serene atmosphere.

It is not one of the most famous, and precisely for that reason many travelers mention it as a good plan B for high season days, when the central beaches get crowded. An essential if your thing is peace and crystal clear water without too many people around.

9. The views of Biokovo, the perfect backdrop

Something that will catch your attention the moment you arrive: behind Brela rises the imposing Biokovo massif. That wall of gray mountain against the blue of the Adriatic is one of those contrasts that makes the Makarska Riviera landscape unique. You can appreciate it from the beach itself, and it looks spectacular in photos.

If you stay more than one day in the area, one of the things to do is go up to the Biokovo Nature Park, with its famous Skywalk viewpoint with a glass floor and views of the entire coast. We didn’t do it on this trip, but many travelers recommend it as an unmissable excursion to combine sea and mountain.

10. A beach day in Brela: our best memory

More than just a point on the map, this is a piece of advice: if you can, dedicate an entire day to Brela. We came from Split thinking of “spending a while” and ended up staying until the sun started to go down. We jumped from Punta Rata to the coastal promenade, had something to eat by the sea, and ended with one last swim when there were fewer people.

That is the magic of Brela beach in Croatia: it is not for going in a rush. It is for throwing your towel under a pine tree, opening the cooler with something fresh, and letting the hours pass. An experience that stayed with us and that we recommend with all our hearts. If you are left wanting more of Croatia afterward, don’t miss our guides to the neighboring islands.

11. Maestral Beach, the most complete in town

If you are looking for a beach with everything at hand and without leaving the center, Plaža Maestral is the answer. It is right in the heart of Brela, on the main promenade, and is one of the most equipped in the entire area: lounge chairs, umbrellas, showers, a floating aquapark for the kids, bar and restaurant just meters away. Many travelers choose it for this reason, especially those traveling with family.

The setting remains typical of Brela: light pebbles, turquoise water, and pine trees that provide shade without having to search for it. It is one of the busiest in high season, so if you want a quiet place arrive early or bet on one of the more hidden coves. But if what you need is total comfort with everything nearby, Maestral will not disappoint you.

Where to stay in Brela (and surroundings)

Although Brela can be easily visited on a day trip from Split, staying in the area has its charm: you wake up with the sea just meters away and take advantage of the beaches early, before the buses with tourists arrive. If you like the quiet atmosphere of a coastal town, we recommend you stay at least one night in Brela.

We always compare accommodation options on the same map, so we see at a glance what is near each beach and at what price. See the options available in Brela below:

Keep in mind: in July and August apartments facing the sea fly off the shelves, so book well in advance. If you travel in June or September you get better prices and the beaches are much less crowded. For those looking for more life and services, Makarska is a few minutes away and has a larger supply of hotels.

How to get to Brela

Brela is on the Makarska Riviera, on the Dalmatian coast, halfway between Split and Makarska. Getting there is very easy:

  • By car (what we did): from Split it is about 45 km along the D8 coastal road, about an hour’s journey. It is our favorite option because it gives you total freedom to stop at the viewpoints along the way, which are beautiful.
  • By bus: there are direct buses from the Split station to Brela (stop “Brela, D8 / Stjepana Radića”), operated by companies like Promet Makarska, FlixBus, and Arriva. They leave several times a day, the trip lasts about an hour and the ticket is around 7 to 14 euros.
  • From Split Airport (SPU): it is a little over an hour away by car. It is convenient to rent a car or arrange a transfer, as public transport involves making connections.

Parking tip: if you go by car and want to stop near the sea, arrive early, between 8 and 9 in the morning. Parking is paid and the spots closest to the beach fill up extremely fast in high season. When they are full, you have to leave the car further away and walk a long stretch downhill. We arrived early and saved ourselves the headache. To organize all these details well, we leave you our guide on how to plan your trip.

Frequently asked questions about Brela beach

Why is Brela beach in Croatia so famous?

Because Forbes magazine named it the most beautiful beach in Europe and placed it among the 10 most beautiful in the world in 2004. Its star beach, Punta Rata, also has the Blue Flag for the quality of its waters. The combination of turquoise water, pine trees, and the iconic Kamen Brela rock made it world-famous.

Is Brela beach sandy or pebbly?

It is made of pebbles, that is, little stones. The entry to the sea has a bottom of stones and some sand. That’s why we recommend you bring water shoes or sandals, as the stones can be hot and slippery. With a good towel or lounge chair, the issue of the stones ceases to be a problem.

How to get to Brela from Split?

From Split it is about 45 km along the D8 coastal road, about an hour by car. There are also direct buses several times a day (Promet Makarska, FlixBus, Arriva) that take about an hour and cost between 7 and 14 euros. The stop is “Brela, D8 / Stjepana Radića”, on the main road.

What is the best time to visit Brela?

June and September are ideal: the sea is already warm, the weather is good and there are far fewer people than in July and August, which is the peak of high season. In those peak months the beaches are crowded and parking becomes complicated, so it’s a good idea to get up early.

Can you visit Brela in one day from Split?

Yes, perfectly. We did it that way and we had enough time to enjoy Punta Rata, the coastal promenade, and the town center. If you want to visit more remote coves or go up to Biokovo, better add a night in the area so you aren’t rushing around.

Do you have to pay to enter the beaches of Brela?

No, access to the beaches is free. What you do pay for is parking if you go by car, and renting lounge chairs and umbrellas if you want them. Arriving early you can find a place to park nearby and a good spot under the pine trees without spending extra.

Conclusion: Brela beach in Croatia, an unmissable Adriatic spot

Brela Beach, in Croatia, is one of those places that justify a trip on their own. Between Punta Rata, the Kamen Brela rock, and that coastal promenade among the pines, we immediately understood why it is considered the most beautiful in Europe. We never tire of recommending it.

If you are putting together your route along the Dalmatian coast, don’t leave it out. And since you are in the area, take the opportunity to see the neighboring islands: you will love them as much as we did.
