Why visit Corralejo in Fuerteventura?
When we chose to move to the island over four years ago, Corralejo was the place that won us over from day one. This coastal town, in the north of Fuerteventura, combines incredible beaches, a relaxed vibe, and that Canarian energy that invites you to take it easy.
Corralejo has it all: quiet areas, lively nightlife, desert nature, and convenient services. It is perfect for both those looking for rest and those who want adventure, surfing, or unique landscapes. Plus, its climate is stable almost all year round, making it an ideal destination regardless of the season.

How to get to and around Corralejo – Fuerteventura
The Fuerteventura airport is about 40-45 minutes by car from Corralejo.
From the airport to get to Corralejo, you can rent a car, take shuttles, a taxi, or a public bus (guagua). Although there is transport, the best option is to rent a car: distances are short, but many beaches or viewpoints are on dirt roads.
To arrive by bus, you must first take Bus Number 3 from the Airport to Puerto del Rosario (the capital’s bus terminal). Then, take bus (guagua) Number 6 from Puerto del Rosario to Corralejo.
Important: Buses are paid in cash to the driver (you must pay with change or preferably no more than 20 euros). Keep in mind that although you can get there for an affordable price, if you want to get around later, it is highly recommended to rent a car, as bus schedules are not very frequent and they do not reach the most beautiful beaches.
Fuerteventura Bus/Guagua information for schedules and routes: Thiade
As we live here, our recommendation is to book a car in advance, especially in high season, and ask about the insurance since it often does not cover unpaved roads. To avoid issues or hidden costs, we recommend CICAR (a Canary Islands company), which you can book and pay for when you pick up the car.
Driving in Fuerteventura is simple; the roads are in good condition and there is little traffic. However, several access points to wild beaches are on unpaved roads.
Historic center and town of Corralejo
The old town of Corralejo is a charming walk. Its narrow streets, paths, sea-facing bars, and small white houses preserve the spirit of the old fishing village. Walking through the port, you can breathe in a local atmosphere with street musicians, crafts, and terraces where you can sit and have a drink while looking at the sea.
Along the main avenue, which later becomes pedestrian, there are surf shops, cafes, markets, and endless corners to enjoy. At night, the atmosphere changes: there are bars with live music, Canarian cuisine restaurants, and some livelier spots if you want to continue the night.
Unique image of the Port of Corralejo (it was during a special season when it rained a lot and, incredibly, the volcano was green; generally, it is brown).👇
Things to do in Corralejo – Fuerteventura: beaches you can’t miss
Grandes Playas de Corralejo – an UNMISSABLE thing to do in Corralejo | Fuerteventura
The Grandes Playas of Corralejo are, without exaggeration, one of the most impressive landscapes to see in Corralejo – Fuerteventura. There are more than nine kilometers of white sand and turquoise sea that border the Corralejo Natural Park, creating a scenery that looks like it was taken from the Caribbean but with that wild Canarian air.
This spot is ideal for those looking to relax, walk barefoot on the sand, or enjoy a quiet swim in crystal-clear waters. It is also one of the best beaches in Fuerteventura to see the contrast between the dunes and the ocean.
We love going early in the morning to spend the day or at sunset, when the wind dies down and the light dyes the dunes in golden tones. If you like photography, those moments are pure gold.
Beaches within the Corralejo Natural Park
The Grandes Playas is not just one beach, but a collection of several coves and stretches of coastline with different personalities. Here we tell you which are the main ones and why they are worth it:
🏖️ Playa del Pozo
Wide, open, and perfect for long walks among the dunes. Very photogenic.
🌊 Playa del Viejo
Facing Isla de Lobos, with spectacular views and clear waters.
🏜️ Corralejo Dunes, an unmissable thing to see in Corralejo
The heart of the natural park, a sea of sand that disappears into the horizon.
🌅 Playa del Dormidero
More sheltered, ideal for couples or those seeking total tranquility.
💧 Playa del Moro / Playa del Burro (Glass Beach)
A small bay, cove-like, with calmer waters, ideal for swimming or snorkeling. It is located between Playa del Dormidero and Playa de El Bajo Negro.

🪁 Playa de El Bajo Negro
Wide and windy space, highly sought after by kitesurfing lovers.
🏄♀️ Playa Alzada
Next to the road, with consistent waves and a surfer vibe.
Each beach or corner of the Grandes Playas and the dunes of Corralejo has its charm, and perhaps visiting them all in one day is possible if you rent a car (though we recommend choosing 1 or 2 and enjoying them, as each has its own charm depending on the wind or tide). From the road, the panoramic views of the Grandes Playas of Corralejo are some of the most beautiful in the entire north of Fuerteventura.
👉 Local TIP: bring sunscreen, water, and a hat. There is no shade or many services, so it is best to go prepared. And if you can, stay until sunset: watching the sun hide behind the volcanoes with the wind playing between the dunes is one of those memories that will stay with you for a lifetime.
Playa de la Goleta / Playa de los Verilitos
Located very close to the center, it is the one we like the most in the town center. And it is perfect if you don’t want to go too far. You have bars, restaurants, and umbrella rentals a few meters away. It is semi-urban, comfortable, and family-friendly. Soft yellow sand, with calm and very transparent waters when it’s quiet, ideal for swimming or for families.
Playa Vista Lobos / Sunset Beach:
It is located a few steps from the center of Corralejo, easy to reach by the coastal path. We named it Sunset Beach, also known as Playa Vista Lobos, Three Views Beach, or Punta Elena.
Part of the beach is white due to its rhodoliths (sea algae stones shaped like popcorn). Please do not take them or break them.
Here you can find them without having to drive a few kilometers to the popcorn beach / Playa del Bajo de la Burra / Playa del Mejillón
❤️🏠… Fuerteventura ✨🏝.
Beaches for water sports
Corralejo is one of the best places in the world for surfing, kitesurfing, and windsurfing. The constant wind and waves make it a paradise for those who enjoy active sea life. If you have never tried it, there are schools with instructors who teach you from scratch. And if you are not a fan of the sport, simply watching the kites flying over the sea is a spectacle in itself.
We often sit down to have some mates, a delicious snack, and watch those doing Kite or Surf; it’s quite a show.
Corralejo Natural Park (Dunes)
An essential thing to do in Corralejo. The Natural Park is an expanse of white sand and dunes that resemble a desert next to the ocean. It is a protected area, so we ask for respect: do not drive off-road and do not leave trash.
We recommend going at sunrise or sunset, when the colors turn golden and the landscape looks like it’s from another planet. Bring water, a hat, and sunscreen, because there is no shade or services.
Corralejo International Kite Festival 🪁
Every November, the sky of the Natural Park of the Dunes fills with color with the Corralejo International Kite Festival, one of the most beautiful and photogenic events in all of Fuerteventura. Generally for three days, dozens of artists and enthusiasts from around the world gather to fly giant kites over the dunes, creating a show that mixes art, wind, and landscape.
For those of us living on the island, it is an unmissable event. We love going early, walking on the sand, and watching how the sky transforms into a multicolored canvas. It is a perfect plan for family, couples, or friends, and it is also completely free. If you are in Corralejo on those dates, you can’t miss it: it is Fuerteventura in its most cheerful essence.
38th International Kite Festival 2025: from Monday, November 10, 2025, to Sunday, November 16, 2025

Excursion to Isla de Lobos
From the port of Corralejo, ferries and speedboats depart daily to Isla de Lobos, a small natural gem just 15/20 minutes away. It is a protected reserve where you can go hiking, swim in transparent waters, and enjoy absolute tranquility.
To visit it, you need a free permit (requested online), and we recommend bringing food, water, and comfortable footwear. We usually go in the morning and return at sunset: a perfect day between the sea and untouched nature.
Volcanoes and viewpoints near Corralejo
The north of Fuerteventura has several extinct volcanoes that can be toured on foot. The most famous is Calderón Hondo, in Lajares. The hike is simple, and the views from the crater are spectacular.
Other places to see, a bit further away
Also, a bit further away (approx. 45 min by car), it is worth climbing to the Morro Velosa viewpoint, from where you can appreciate the color contrast of the Majorero landscape: reddish earth, dunes, sea, and blue sky. Or, right there, is also the famous Guise and Ayose Viewpoint, and then continue to one of the most beautiful towns, Betancuria.
Nearby towns to complement your visit
If you have time, take a trip to El Cotillo, about 20 minutes from Corralejo. It is a charming town with natural lagoons, wild beaches, and one of the best sunsets on the island.
More info: Things to do in El Cotillo
Another interesting plan is to visit La Oliva, where you can learn about the local Majorero history, see traditional architecture, and enjoy a more rural setting.
Markets in Corralejo – Things to do in Corralejo
El Campanario Shopping Center Market (Corralejo)
📅 Thursdays and Sundays – 09:00 to 14:00 | Map Location Link
Another lovely option to visit in Corralejo is the El Campanario Shopping Center Market, which is open on Thursdays and Sundays from 09:00 to 14:00. Unlike other more touristy markets, this one has a very pleasant atmosphere, with local crafts, live music, and local products, all in a super picturesque setting. It’s not huge, but it’s worth it to walk around for a while, have a drink in the central square, and enjoy the atmosphere.
Corralejo Market (Acua Water Park)
📅 Tuesdays and Fridays – 09:00 to 14:00 | Map Location Link
If you are in the area on a Tuesday or Friday morning, you can stop by the Corralejo Market, which is set up next to the Acua Water Park. It is a small market with few stalls and a rather touristy offering: cheap clothes, bags, sarongs, and imitations. It is not an unmissable or especially interesting market, but it can be useful for a quick walk if you are strolling through Corralejo.

Typical cuisine and where to eat in Corralejo
Eating well in Corralejo is not difficult. Canarian cuisine is tasty, fresh, and reasonably priced. You cannot leave without trying:
- Majorero cheese (our favorite)
- Papas arrugadas with mojo picón sauce
- Fresh catch of the day
- Gofio, a local classic
We love getting away from the more touristy areas and looking for family restaurants or local taverns. If you want something more gourmet, the port area has very good options with sea views.
Accommodation in Corralejo – Fuerteventura
There is accommodation for every taste: hotels, apartments, villas, hostels, and complexes with pools. If you are looking for peace and quiet, the old town or the streets near the dunes are ideal.
For a livelier atmosphere, the main avenue/Avenida Nuestra Señora del Carmen area has bars, restaurants, and nightlife.
Local TIP: book in advance, especially in July and August.

How to enjoy Corralejo like locals
After living here for over four years, we learned that Corralejo is best enjoyed without rushing. Get up early, walk or bike without a destination, discover non-touristy corners, and mingle with the locals.
Our favorite moments:
-
Having breakfast by the sea before the tourists arrive.
-
Watching the sunset from the dunes or at Sunset Beach (even if the sun sets off to the side).
-
Eating fresh fish at a restaurant without a menu, where the chef tells you what they caught that day.
The true essence of Fuerteventura: authenticity, calm, and sea.
