Where is Capo Vaticano and How to Get Your Bearings?

Capo Vaticano is located on the Tyrrhenian coast of Calabria, about 60 km south of Tropea and less than 20 km from Pizzo. It is right next to the municipality of Ricadi, which is the administrative heart of the area. The cape itself is a rocky point that juts out into the Tyrrhenian Sea, and some of the most impressive beaches in the entire region are spread out around it.

The area is quite spread out: there is no “center” as such in Capo Vaticano. There are some buildings, a lighthouse, and the main viewpoint provides access to the trails leading down to the beaches. Baia del Sole is one of the best-known names in the area: it is a complex of beaches and services that extends north of the cape. You will also find references to Santa Maria, which is a small nearby coastal town with some accommodation and dining options.

The most important thing to know from the start: without a car, it is very difficult to get around here. The beaches are separated from each other, the trails are not always clearly marked, and public transport is practically non-existent out of season. If you are traveling to Calabria, renting a car is almost mandatory.

How to Get to Capo Vaticano

By car (the best option)

We always arrived by car from Pizzo, and the journey is very simple. Take the SS18 south and then follow the signs to Ricadi and Capo Vaticano. In total, it is about a 25-30 minute drive, mostly with sea views. The scenery along the road is worth it alone.

From Tropea, which is the most touristy town in the area, it is barely a 15-minute drive. If you are arriving from Vibo Valentia, allow for about 45 minutes. Parking near the main viewpoint can be difficult in summer: arrive early or be prepared to wait for a spot on the roadside.

By train + shuttle/taxi

The nearest train station is Tropea, connected to the coastal line linking Reggio Calabria with Paola. From Tropea, you can take a taxi or, in high season, a shuttle service to Capo Vaticano. Outside of July and August, this option becomes quite complicated.

From Vibo Valentia

Vibo Valentia has a train station with more frequent connections than Tropea, but it is further from the cape. The best strategy is still to rent a car at the station or at Lamezia Terme airport, which is the nearest regional airport (about 80 km away).

Historical and Cultural Panorama of Capo Vaticano

The history of Capo Vaticano is fascinating. In ancient times, it was part of Magna Greece and was considered a sacred place. According to legends, sailors and oracles met here to predict the future before sailing through the dangerous Strait of Messina. The name “Vaticano” derives from vaticinio, meaning prophecy; and the promontory stood as a place of connection between land and sea. This cultural backdrop gives even more value to the landscape: it is not just beautiful, but also symbolic. As travelers, we loved this aspect because it adds depth to the photos and the experience.

A treasure in the south of the peninsula

Many travelers arrive looking for the most authentic essence of the Mediterranean and they find it in Capo Vaticano Italy. Being located at the tip of the “boot”, this place offers unique landscapes that mix wild cliffs with a hospitality that makes you feel at home from the very first day.

Capo Vaticano — Costa degli Dei 💫✨

This entire coastline is known as the Coast of the Gods Calabria, a name that suits it perfectly due to its almost divine beauty. Legends say that the ancient gods chose these beaches for their turquoise colors and magical sunsets, making it one of the most beautiful areas in the entire region.

Capo Vaticano is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Calabria, in the south of Italy. This place is famous for its beautiful beaches and spectacular coastal scenery, making it an ideal place for a relaxing vacation.

The Costa degli Dei (Coast of the Gods) is a stretch of the Calabrian coast, with 55 kilometers of stunning beaches with turquoise and crystal-clear water stretching from Nicotera to Pizzo.

The must-see viewpoint of things to do in Capo Vaticano: the lighthouse and the panoramic terrace

If there is one spot you cannot overlook when researching things to do in Capo Vaticano, it is the lighthouse viewpoint. The lighthouse in question, the Faro di Capo Vaticano, sits on a cliff overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea and offers spectacular views (it is said that you can sometimes see as far as the Stromboli volcano on clear days).

“Terrazza panoramica” viewpoint next to the Faro di Capo Vaticano, situated on a rocky cliff <Photos from the viewpoint>.

From the balcony / panoramic terrace you can capture unforgettable sunsets: the golden light over the sea, the white-gray promontory, and the silence of the natural surroundings combine into a magical scene. We spent an hour there almost in silence, taking photos, enjoying the wind and the distant horizon, and we recommend it to start your trip with good energy.

There is a small path downwards to the left that leads to the “Terrazza panoramica” viewpoint.
Without a doubt, it is one of the most beautiful seas in Calabria. A true gem 💎 of southern Italy 🇮🇹.

Beaches of Capo Vaticano: — Things to do and enjoy 🤩 Spectacular!

The beaches are the main attraction among things to do in Capo Vaticano. With crystal-clear water and golden sand, this place is a true paradise. Here are the ones we consider essential.

Spiaggia di Grotticelle Beach

It is one of the most fascinating beaches and one of the main things to do in Capo Vaticano. Surrounded by wild vegetation and a long stretch of incredibly clear sand with three beaches joined together, one next to the other. It is known as “the Calabrian Caribbean” due to the shade of its water and its seabed.

We opted to arrive early to get a quiet spot and take the opportunity to snorkel: we saw colorful fish, seaweed, and rocky formations that make the seabed as interesting as the surface.

Spiaggia Santa Maria Beach – Santa Maria di Ricadi

A few kilometers from the cape is the small town of Santa Maria di Ricadi, with a beach that is more accessible and quieter than those at the cape itself. It has a more authentic Italian coastal town atmosphere: a fish restaurant, shops with local products, and bathers coming from the surrounding villages. It is a great plan to combine with your visit to the cape.

Praia i Focu Beach (accessible only by boat)

A more adventurous experience: this beach is best reached by boat from Grotticelle or from a nearby boarding point. It is surrounded by three cliffs, which makes it even more perfect for those looking for something wilder and less crowded.

The Wild Coves of the Cape

If you dare to walk a bit, Capo Vaticano hides some of the most beautiful coves we saw in all of Calabria. There are trails that start from the viewpoint and lead to small stone and white sand beaches with practically no services. Some are only accessible on foot or by kayak.

We found a couple of completely empty coves on weekday visits, outside of high season. Bring water and food if you plan to explore, because there is nothing along those trails. The reward is worth every step.

Other coves/beaches: Torre Ruffa, Formicoli, Riaci

For those with more time or looking to explore less crowded beaches: Torre Ruffa, Formicoli, and Riaci or Spiaggia del Tono offer a quieter experience, with landscapes of rock, Mediterranean vegetation, and a sea that looks like it was painted. The water quality is excellent, and many of these beaches are perfect for exploring the seabed or simply relaxing in the sun.

TIP: rent an umbrella and lounge chair in advance in high season, or bring your own towel, water, umbrella and try to arrive early.

Baia del Sole

Baia del Sole is the most well-known beach complex in Capo Vaticano. It is located north of the cape and offers a series of coves with crystal-clear water, fine sand, and services like lounge chairs, umbrellas, and a bar. In high season it is quite busy, especially with Italian tourists. Outside of July and August, you can have the beaches almost to yourself.

The main access is from the road, descending a series of steps carved into the rock. The water here has those shades ranging from light green to deep blue depending on the time of day: perfect for snorkeling and swimming among rocks.

Did you know…?

The Aeolian Islands, visible from the Capo Vaticano viewpoint, are a UNESCO World Heritage site due to their complex volcanic activity, including the famous active Stromboli volcano.

The Beaches of Capo Vaticano: Which One to Choose

This is probably the most frequent question for those planning a visit. The area has several options depending on the type of experience you are looking for:

  • Baia del Sole: Most accessible and with the most services. Ideal if you are traveling with kids or want comfort. Can be crowded in summer.
  • Lighthouse trail coves: Wilder, no services, ideal for those seeking tranquility and who don’t mind walking a bit.
  • Santa Maria Beach: Longer, with fine sand and a more relaxed atmosphere. Good option if you want to avoid the crowds.
  • Rocky coves south of the cape: Only accessible on foot via unmarked trails. For the more adventurous, these are the most impressive.

The water at all beaches in Capo Vaticano is spectacular. The Costa degli Dei —that is the official name of this coastal strip— does not disappoint. Visibility conditions for snorkeling are excellent almost all year round.

Outdoor Activities and Nature

Besides sun and beach, there is much more to do in Capo Vaticano to connect with nature.

Snorkeling and diving

The seabed of Capo Vaticano is one of the best in Calabria. Volcanic rocks, sandy bottoms, and water clarity create perfect conditions for snorkeling. In season, some operators offer diving trips and equipment rental in the Baia del Sole and Santa Maria areas.

Stunning Sunsets (il tramonto)

Sunsets are another natural spectacle among things to do in Capo Vaticano. Head to the lighthouse viewpoint to witness the sun hiding behind the horizon of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Unforgettable.

Sunset viewpoints: one of our favorite moments was staying at the Belvedere at sunset, watching the sky turn orange over the sea. The silence and the view were magical.

Adventures in Nature – Things to do in Capo Vaticano

If you are a nature lover, Capo Vaticano also has several trails along the coast for hiking and exploring local flora and fauna. An ideal area for scenic walks (if it’s not too hot), there are trails from the viewpoint towards the lighthouse and towards hidden coves. The environment of Mediterranean vegetation, cliffs, and sea views is ideal for walking calmly.

Calabrian Food: Gastronomy and local flavors of Calabria

One of the pleasures of visiting Capo Vaticano is tasting the delicious local food. All the food in the region is very good! The Calabria region, where Capo Vaticano is located, is famous for its authentic and tasty cuisine.

Dishes you can’t miss:

  • Macaroni with ‘Nduja, a dish based on spicy pork sausage and red pepper.
  • Don’t miss the “fileja” pasta (Filea, filei or fileda), a typical pasta from the Vibonese area made with water and flour, with a long, twisted shape.
  • Red onion of Tropea, a must-have in local dishes.
  • Swordfish (pesce spada) grilled, fresh fish from the coastal region.
  • For dessert, the very famous Tartufo di Pizzo (very delicious), a chocolate-covered ice cream ball originating from the nearby area, perfect for ending a dinner by the sea.

Also, don’t forget to accompany your meals with a light Calabrian red wine, or even a regional liqueur like the Vecchio Amaro del Capo, which bears the name of this place.

Best Time to Visit Capo Vaticano

Calabria has a classic Mediterranean climate: very hot and dry summers, mild winters. The best time to visit Capo Vaticano depends on what you are looking for:

  • July and August: Maximum temperature, water perfect for swimming, but also the maximum number of tourists. The beaches get crowded and prices go up.
  • June and September: Our favorite times for Calabria. The weather is ideal, the water is still warm and there are far fewer people. It’s when southern Italy shows its best side.
  • May and October: For those looking for total tranquility. Some beach services may be closed, but the landscape is just as spectacular and prices are considerably lower.
  • November to April: Off-season. Some beaches are accessible but the water is cold. Good for seeing the cape in wild mode, with no one around. Local restaurants and accommodation may be closed.

We traveled at the end of May / beginning of June and it was ideal: warm days, pleasant sea, few people.

Practical Tips for Visiting Capo Vaticano and Surroundings

To make your stay in Capo Vaticano / surroundings smooth and pleasant, here are several TIPS:

  • Arrive early in summer: Parking near the viewpoint and Baia del Sole fills up fast. Before 10 in the morning everything is much quieter.
  • Car rental: although not strictly mandatory, it is highly recommended if you want to move freely.
  • Remote beach: if you want to reach more hidden coves, check boat schedules or access early from land.
  • Umbrella/lounge chair: high season implies greater demand; book or bring your own.
  • Sun protection: the Mediterranean sun is strong, bring sunscreen, hat, water.
  • Meal times: in Italy many trattorias open late (normal for us); plan dinner for after 7:30-8 PM.
  • Bring water and snacks: In the more remote coves there are no services. Prepare as if you were going on an excursion.
  • Respect the environment: the landscape of Capo Vaticano is spectacular, but also fragile. Do not leave trash, respect trails and wildlife.
  • Book accommodation in advance if traveling in July/August.
  • Combine with Tropea and Pizzo: The area has a lot to see. Capo Vaticano as a full day works well if you want to explore in depth; if you have less time, combine it with Tropea in the morning or afternoon.

With these simple tips, you avoid setbacks and enjoy it to the fullest.
