It is worth clarifying something here that many people overlook: Marinella di Zambrone is not a village or a town, it is the name of a beach. A small, wild bay located in the municipality of Zambrone, in the province of Vibo Valentia, Calabria, Italy.
The area actually has two very different realities. On one hand, there is Marina di Zambrone, the coastal town with its long promenade, hotels, restaurants, and a wide, equipped beach. On the other hand, a few meters to the north and accessible only by a trail, is the Spiaggia Marinella di Zambrone —also known as Paradiso del Sub— which is what this guide is about: a small, wild beach with no infrastructure whatsoever, nestled between cliffs and vegetation.
Both are part of the Costa degli Dei (Coast of the Gods), that Calabrian Tyrrhenian stretch that goes from Pizzo to Joppolo and features some of the most impressive beaches in Italy. But they are completely different experiences:
- Marina di Zambrone/Zambrone Beach is comfortable and accessible.
- Spiaggia Marinella di Zambrone (Paradiso del Sub) requires effort, a bit of hiking, and descending over rocks (though some people go with children and even strollers).
How to get to Marinella di Zambrone
The most comfortable way is by car. From Pizzo, it is about 20 minutes via the SS18; from Tropea, between 15 and 20 minutes heading north. The most useful GPS reference point is the Zambrone train station: the path to the beach starts from there.
And here is the part that sets Marinella apart from the rest: there is no direct access. From the station, you have to hike down a path of about 700 meters that is in fairly good condition and has a wooden railing, but it ends in a staircase of rocks to reach the sand. It is not technically difficult, but you must keep it in mind before arriving.
Our recommendation: use closed-toe shoes for the descent, carry a light backpack, and above all bring water and food. Once you are down there, there is nothing: no bar, no beach club, no restrooms. The beach is completely wild and it will stay that way, which is exactly what makes it special.
For those traveling by train: the Zambrone station has connections from Lamezia Terme and is literally the starting point of the trail to the beach. It is one of the few beaches in the area reachable by train, although the walk is still required.
Parking at Marinella di Zambrone
Parking is managed near the Zambrone station. Parking spaces with white lines are free but fill up very quickly; the blue ones are paid. In summer, it is best to arrive before 10 AM to secure a spot without issues. Outside the high season, there is no problem.
Marinella di Zambrone Beach: what you will find
Once you go down and reach the sand, the panorama is from another world. The Zambrone Calabria beach is a completely wild beach: no beach clubs, no rental lounge chairs, no services. Just the sea, the sand, and the green cliffs surrounding it. That is exactly its charm.
The water is the highlight: turquoise, crystal clear, completely calm. With no waves and seabeds that combine sand and rock, it is perfect for snorkeling. The contrast between the green of the mountain and the intense blue of the Tyrrhenian is impressive, especially viewed from above as you descend.
The beach is cozy and intimate. It isn’t huge, nor does it pretend to be. We visited at the end of May and there were already people there, so it gets quite crowded in mid-summer. But even with people, it maintains that feeling of a discovered place that not everyone knows.
Is it suitable for children?
It depends on their age and mobility. The descent down the mountain and the final stretch with rocks can be tricky with very small children or a lot of equipment. With children 8 years and older and light backpacks, it is perfectly doable. Once on the beach, the water is calm and shallow, ideal for little ones.
Things to do in Marinella di Zambrone beyond the beach
Marinella doesn’t have a huge tourist offering, but that is part of its charm. What you can do:
- Snorkel: The clear waters of the Tyrrhenian make it worth bringing a mask and snorkel. In the rocky areas at the ends of the beach, you will find interesting marine life.
- Explore Marina di Zambrone: The coastal town has a quiet lungomare with restaurants and bars. It is the most accessible and relaxed side of the municipality, very different from the wild Marinella beach.
- Tour the coast by car: Marinella is the ideal starting point to explore the Calabrian Tyrrhenian coast. In a few kilometers, you can reach Tropea, Capo Vaticano, and Pizzo.
- Photography and sunsets: The sunsets from the beach are next-level. The sun sets over the sea and the sky turns colors that look edited.
Where to eat near Marinella di Zambrone
On the beach itself, you won’t find anything. It is a wild beach: no bars, no beach clubs, no kiosks. That is why it is essential to come down with everything you need. We always brought a backpack with plenty of water, some easy food —paninis, fruit, picnic snacks— and everything we needed to spend the day.
To eat well, the closest option is the promenade of Marina di Zambrone, a few minutes away by car, where there are small restaurants with genuine Calabrian cuisine. Pizzo —our base— has a much more varied gastronomic offer, including the famous gelateria with the tartufo which is worth the trip alone.
If you are going to spend the whole day in Marinella, plan well: calculate more water than you think you will need, especially in summer with the Calabrian heat.
The best time to visit Marinella di Zambrone
We visited at the end of May and there were already people there, which confirmed to us that in mid-summer it must be quite crowded. May in Calabria was a total success: pleasant heat, water already at a good temperature, and far fewer people than in July or August.
If you can choose, aim for May, June, or September. In those months the weather remains excellent, the access to the beach is not saturated, and you can enjoy the place with much more tranquility. July and August are perfect if you don’t mind sharing the space, but arrive early because the path down and the parking get complicated when there are many people.
In October, many services in the area close and the town enters a quiet mode. For those seeking total solitude, it can be interesting, but keep in mind that the experience will be more austere.
Marinella di Zambrone vs. Tropea: which one to choose?
This is the question we get asked the most. The answer depends on what you are looking for.
Visiting Tropea
Tropea is spectacular, there is no doubt. That cliff with the town on top and the beach below, “Spiaggia della Rotonda“, is one of the most iconic images of Calabria. But it is massive in summer: lines at restaurants, crowded beaches, higher prices.

Marinella di Zambrone
Marinella di Zambrone, on the other hand, is for those who want a slower pace. Fewer people, more authenticity, more reasonable prices. We visited it several times because it gave us that feeling of discovering something not everyone knows.
If you can, don’t choose: they are 15 minutes apart. You can do Tropea one day and Marinella another, or combine them on the same day.

We stayed in Pizzo, which was our base for almost a month to explore the whole coast. From there, Marinella is 20 minutes away and the logistics are simple.
Other nearby accommodation options:
- Marina di Zambrone: The coastal town in the same municipality has hotels, B&Bs, and apartments with direct access to the lungomare. It is the closest base to Marinella beach.
- Tropea: It has the largest hotel offer in the area, for all budgets.
- Briatico: Halfway between Pizzo and Marinella, with more affordable accommodation.

Practical tips for your visit
- Bring closed-toe shoes: The descent down the mountain and the final rocks are much more comfortable with sneakers. Save flip-flops for the beach.

- Light backpack: The less you carry, the easier the access. Leave unnecessary things in the car.
