Lefkada has something that makes it unique among the Greek islands: it is connected to the mainland by a floating bridge. You don’t need a ferry or plane to arrive by car. Yet, its west coast beaches have nothing to envy the Caribbean. We are serious… the color of the water does not look real.

1. Porto Katsiki, the star beach of Lefkada
We start strong. Porto Katsiki is THE postcard of Lefkada and probably one of the most famous beaches in all of Greece. A huge white cliff, intense turquoise water, and a strip of light pebbles that make the sea shine even more.
We went early in the morning to avoid the crowds and it was a total success. You arrive by car on a mountain road with curves (beautiful, but drive calmly), leave the vehicle in the paid parking lot above (between €5 and €10 depending on the season, and more in mid-August), and walk down about 100 steps to the sand. Nothing demanding, it takes a few minutes.
Keep in mind: there is a part of the beach cordoned off due to the risk of rockfalls, so respect the signs. And bring an umbrella or something for the sun, because the cliff only provides shade early in the morning. For us, it is an absolute MUST, even if there are people. The water is the kind you never want to leave.
2. Egremni Beach, a paradise at the end of 400 steps
If there is one place on the island that we loved, it is Egremni. It is 2.5 kilometers of wild beach under cliffs over 200 meters high, with a blue that competes head-to-head with Porto Katsiki but with far fewer people.
But winning it comes at a price. From the parking lot, you walk a section of more than a kilometer along a downhill path, and then the metal staircase of about 400 steps begins (rebuilt in 2021 after the 2015 earthquake destroyed the original access). Going down is easy. Going up in the afternoon, in the heat… that’s another story haha. Bring water, comfortable footwear, and patience.
Important and updated fact: the winter 2026 storms damaged part of the staircase with a rockfall, so check the status of the foot access before going. The alternative is always the boat excursions that depart from Nidri and Vasiliki, which drop you off directly on the beach without effort.
3. Lefkada Town, the Venetian capital of the island
The capital of Lefkada surprised us much more than we expected. It is a small town, built at sea level, with colorful little houses, pedestrian alleys, and a promenade ideal for sunset. The main street comes to life in the late afternoon: ice cream parlors, tavernas, local shops.
Among the things to do in Lefkada town are its churches with iron bell towers (a seismic peculiarity of the island) and, for those who enjoy museums, many travelers recommend the archaeological museum and the collection of post-Byzantine religious art. We preferred to get lost in the little streets and sit in front of the marina to watch the sailboats. A simple plan that is well worth it.
4. Santa Maura Castle, the gateway to the island
Just before crossing the floating bridge that connects Lefkada to the mainland, you will see the Santa Maura Castle. It is a 14th-century fortress that passed through Venetian and Ottoman hands and guarded the only access to the island for centuries.
We stopped to see it when we arrived by car. The walls next to the sea are very photogenic, especially with the sunset light. It is a short visit, the kind that combines perfectly with entering or leaving the island.

5. Pefkoulia Beach and viewpoint, the first postcard of the west coast
Going down from the capital towards the west, one of the first things to do in Lefkada on the wild coast awaits you: the Pefkoulia viewpoint. From above you can see the complete beach, very long, with a gradient of turquoise that seems edited with a filter… but no, it’s like that in person. We stopped the car at every viewpoint on this coast, and this was one of the ones that impressed us the most.
Pefkoulia beach, below, is wide, pebbly, and much quieter than its famous neighbors. It is a perfect stop on the way to Agios Nikitas, which is just a step away.
6. Agios Nikitas, the most charming village on the west coast
Agios Nikitas is the only village in Lefkada that is literally on the west coast, and it is a gem. A main pedestrian street that goes down to a small beach with crystal clear water, tavernas with outdoor tables, and a relaxed atmosphere that you will fall in love with.
In our case, we went for lunch and ended up staying the whole afternoon. Taxi boats leave from the village to Milos beach, and you can also walk along a path. If you are looking for where to stay with an authentic Greek village atmosphere, this is one of the best points on the island.
7. Kathisma Beach, the most comfortable on the west coast
Kathisma is the “organized” beach of the west: wide, long, with beach bars, sun loungers, and easy parking. The water has the same spectacular turquoise as this whole coast, but here you don’t have to go down hundreds of steps to enjoy it.
For us, it is the perfect option for a quiet day or if you are traveling with children. At the end of September, it was almost empty, and the sunset from the beach was one of the most beautiful of the trip. The west coast of Lefkada looks directly towards where the sun sets… and it shows.
8. Milos Beach, the wild neighbor of Agios Nikitas
Next to Agios Nikitas hides Milos Beach, a half-moon of white pebbles without any services. You arrive by taxi boat from the village or by walking along a path of about 20-30 minutes that starts behind the church.
Watch out, do not confuse it with the island of Milos in the Cyclades, which is another Greek destination that also fascinated us. This Lefkada beach is pure nature: cliffs, open sea, and silence. Bring everything you need because there is nothing down there. And that is precisely why we liked it so much.
9. Megali Petra, the beach of the giant stones
Following the west coast towards the south, Megali Petra appears, a long pebble beach known for the huge rocks that detached from the cliff and ended up on the shore (hence its name: “big stone” in Greek). Many travelers choose it precisely for that reason: of all the things to do in Lefkada, it is one of the least crowded on this coast, and the water color has nothing to envy the famous ones.
You can get there walking from Kathisma or leaving the car about 10 minutes away on foot. It has no services, so bring water, comfortable footwear for the stones, and your own umbrella (on the island’s organized beaches, renting one costs around €5-10 per day; here, there simply aren’t any).
10. Nidri and its boat excursions, one of the essentials in Lefkada
Nidri is the busiest tourist center on the island, on the east coast. The coast here is totally different: calm sea, green islands scattered around the bay, and a port from which boats leave all day long.
The classic excursions tour the islands of the bay: Meganisi, Madouri (a private island with a mansion included), and the famous Skorpios, which was owned by Onassis. We missed the full excursion due to travel time, but many travelers recommend it as one of the best trips in the area. Boats to Egremni and Porto Katsiki also leave from Nidri, ideal if you prefer to avoid the stairs.
11. Dimosari Waterfalls, an oasis near Nidri
About 3 kilometers from Nidri, inland, are the Dimosari waterfalls. A short path between rock walls takes you to pools of clear (and very cold, we warn you heh) water. After the summer, the flow drops quite a bit, so if you go in September or October like us, expect more pool than waterfall.
Still, the walk is worth it: the canyon is beautiful, there is a taverna on the way, and it is a different plan among so much beach. In spring, with the thaw, is when it has the most water.
12. Mikros Gialos, the calm bay of the east coast
On the east side, the coast changes completely: protected bays, flat sea, and family-friendly beaches. Mikros Gialos is the nicest of all, a cove with transparent and calm waters, ideal if you travel with children or if you want a day at the sea without waves or stairs. You arrive by car right to the beach, with tavernas and services around.
It is the perfect counterpoint to the wild beaches of the west: less spectacular visually, much more comfortable to stay all day.
13. Sivota, the hidden bay of sailboats
Sivota is one of those places that makes you stop the car at the viewpoint on the road. A narrow and protected bay, full of sailboats, with fish tavernas around the port. It doesn’t have a notable beach, but it has something better: atmosphere.
We went for dinner one night and it was lovely. Fresh fish, tables next to the water, and the masts of the sailboats moving slowly. If you like photography, the viewpoint over the bay at sunset is unmissable.
14. Vasiliki, windsurfing and starting point to the south
At the southern end of the island, Vasiliki is famous throughout Europe for one thing: the wind. In the afternoon, a constant thermal wind rises, making it a mecca for windsurfing. Watching dozens of sails crossing the bay is a spectacle in itself.
In addition to water sports, Vasiliki is a port village with a very good vibe and the departure point for boats to Agiofili, Egremni, and Porto Katsiki. Ferries to Kefalonia also leave from here, something to keep in mind if you are planning a route through the Ionian islands as we did.
15. Agiofili Beach, the turquoise cove of the south
A few minutes from Vasiliki is Agiofili, a small white pebble cove with water so transparent that the boats seem to float in the air. It is one of the best waters on the island for snorkeling.
You arrive by taxi boat from the port of Vasiliki in about 10 minutes, or by walking along a path of about 30-40 minutes with good views. Since it is small, it fills up quickly in high season: go early or leave it for September, which is when we enjoyed it with very few people.
16. Karya, the mountain village you don’t expect
The interior of Lefkada is another world. Karya, at an altitude of about 500 meters, is a mountain village with a huge square under giant plane trees, traditional tavernas, and ladies who still weave the typical embroidery of the island, a craft with centuries of history.
We went up by car one afternoon and loved the change of scenery: olive trees, mountains, and coolness after so many days at the beach. Having a Greek coffee in the square, without hurry, is one of those simple things that make a trip special.
17. Cape Lefkatas and the Doukato lighthouse, the end of the Ionian world
At the southern tip of the island, where everything ends, is Cape Lefkatas with its lighthouse. The cliffs drop into the sea and the views are some of the most impressive things to do in Lefkada. According to legend, the poetess Sappho threw herself from these rocks for an unrequited love, and in ancient times there was a temple here dedicated to Apollo.
The road to the cape is narrow and has stretches of gravel at the end, but it is done very slowly. We went for sunset and it was one of the moments of the trip. The sun setting into the Ionian Sea, the lighthouse, the wind… no photo does it justice.
18. Faneromeni Monastery, the viewpoint of the capital
A few kilometers from Lefkada town, on top of a hill, is the Faneromeni monastery, the most important on the island. Beyond the religious building, what justifies the climb are the views: the city, the lagoon, the floating bridge, and the mainland, all in one panoramic view.
Admission is FREE and respectful clothing is requested to tour the interior, where many travelers recommend its small ecclesiastical museum. We went up mainly for the viewpoint and it was worth every curve of the road.
Where to see the best sunsets in Lefkada
Sunsets are another must-do in Lefkada. The entire west coast looks directly towards where the sun sets, so there are plenty of options. Our three favorites, tested in person: Kathisma beach with your feet on the pebbles, Cape Lefkatas next to the lighthouse (the most dramatic of all), and the viewpoints on the road between Agios Nikitas and Athani, where you can stop the car and have the show all to yourself.
Another classic that many travelers talk about is Café Panorama, near Athani, with a terrace over the cliffs on the way to Porto Katsiki. We didn’t get to go, but it appears in all the recommendations in the area; keep it on your radar if you are around there in the late afternoon.
Itinerary to visit Lefkada in 4 days
With our 12 nights we could go without hurry, but if you have less time, this itinerary covers the essentials of what to see in Lefkada:
- Day 1: Lefkada town, Santa Maura castle, and sunset at the Faneromeni monastery.
- Day 2: Complete west coast: Pefkoulia viewpoint, Agios Nikitas, Milos beach, Megali Petra, and Kathisma for sunset.
- Day 3: The two greats: Porto Katsiki early and Egremni later (or boat excursion that combines both).
- Day 4: South and east: Vasiliki, Agiofili, Sivota, Mikros Gialos, and Nidri with its waterfalls.
With a fifth day add Karya, Cape Lefkatas, and a boat excursion around the islands of the Nidri bay.

Where to stay in Lefkada
The key decision is east or west. Nidri and Lefkada town are the most practical bases with more services; Agios Nikitas is the option with the most charm to be close to the best beaches; and Vasiliki is ideal if your plan is the south and water sports. In our case, we stayed at a fixed base and moved around by car everywhere, something that in an island of this size works perfectly. How to get to Lefkada
Lefkada is the only Ionian island you can reach by car without taking a ferry, thanks to the Agia Mavra floating bridge that connects it to the mainland. These are the options:
- By plane: the closest airport is Preveza-Aktion (PVK), about 22 km from Lefkada town, with flights from Athens and European charters from May to September. A taxi to the island costs around €25-30 and takes about 30 minutes.
- By car from Athens: about 4 and a half hours on the road (approx. 380 km), with tolls. This is what makes Lefkada so popular among those touring mainland Greece.
- By ferry from other islands: Lefkada connects with Kefalonia and Ithaca, perfect for combining islands as we did on our Ionian route.
Ferries from Lefkada to Kefalonia and Ithaca
An important fact, because there is a lot of old information going around: ferries to Kefalonia no longer depart from Nidri but from the port of Vasiliki, in the south of the island. The Vasiliki-Fiskardo route takes about 1 hour, operates daily in season (from June to September), and the ticket is around €11-12 per person. In summer there is also a seasonal connection from Vasiliki to Frikes, in Ithaca. Only the local ferry to the small island of Meganisi leaves from Nidri.
If you are traveling with a rental car, two tips from our experience in the Ionian: confirm with the rental company that the insurance covers travel between islands (many do not allow it) and book the vehicle’s place in advance in July and August, because the hold fills up. How to get around Lefkada
Our recommendation is clear: rent a car. We toured the entire island by rental car and it is, by far, the best way to get to the west and south beaches, which public transport does not cover well. The roads are in good condition, although in the cliff area they are narrow and with many curves.
KTEL buses connect Lefkada town with Nidri, Vasiliki, and Agios Nikitas, but with limited frequencies. For beaches like Porto Katsiki or Egremni there is no bus: only car, taxi, or boat excursion.

What to eat in Lefkada
Ionian cuisine has its own identity and in Lefkada you must try the Englouvi lentils (famous throughout Greece), the local salami (ladotyri and island sausages), fresh fish in the Sivota tavernas, and homemade sweets from the mountain villages. And for dessert, like in all of Greece, Greek yogurt with honey… we never get tired of it heh.
A tip from our experience: small port tavernas (Sivota, Agios Nikitas, Vasiliki) tend to have better price-quality ratios than those in the more touristy areas of Nidri.
