Things to do in Arcachon: Essential 2026 Guide
If you have ever lived or spent time in Bordeaux, you have probably heard of Arcachon. We did, and the truth is that we looked it up immediately and saved it for a day trip (even though it was the end of winter, we wanted to see the sea!). We spent almost two months living in Bordeaux as digital nomads, and one day we decided to rent a car and take the excursion. The result? One of the best outings we had during our entire stay in the southwest of France. In this guide, we tell you everything about things to do in Arcachon, from the famous coastal town to the impressive Dune of Pilat, so you can organize your visit without missing anything.
Arcachon is a coastal town located about 70 km from Bordeaux, on the shores of the bay that bears its name. It is famous for its oysters, its 19th-century summer villa architecture, and, above all, for being the gateway to the largest dune in Europe. If you are in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, including it in your route is practically mandatory.
Do you want to know if it’s worth it? Spoiler: absolutely yes.

How to get to Arcachon from Bordeaux
Arcachon is about 70 km from Bordeaux, which makes it a perfect day trip. We went by car and it took about an hour, taking the A660 motorway. The road is simple and quite direct.
If you prefer public transport, it is also a very viable option. There are direct trains from the Gare de Bordeaux-Saint-Jean with a very good frequency, and the trip takes about 50 minutes. Once in Arcachon, the town center can be perfectly explored on foot.
What we do recommend is to go early, especially in high season (summer), because both the town and the Dune of Pilat get full of tourists and the parking lots fill up quickly. Since we went out of high season, we didn’t have any problems.
Things to do in Arcachon town: villas and the seafront
Arcachon is not just the dune. The town itself has a lot to offer. The first thing that catches your attention when you arrive in the center is its characteristic architecture: 19th-century Belle Époque villas, with gardens, turrets, and a very particular style that mixes Norman with Moorish influences. It is beautiful to walk around without rushing.
The seafront, known as the Boulevard de la Plage, is ideal for a quiet stroll by the sea. There is a quite pleasant urban beach where people swim and sunbathe in summer. In the off-season, like when we went, the atmosphere is much quieter and more authentic.
It is also worth getting a little lost in the Quartier d’Hiver (Winter District), which is located in the upper part of the town. It is the historic residential area where the Bordeaux bourgeoisie built their summer mansions. There are huge trees, houses with personality, and very few people. A total contrast to the seafront.
The Observatoire Sainte Cécile: the best views of the bay
The most famous viewpoint in the entire bay of Arcachon is, without a doubt, the Observatoire Sainte Cécile. It is a 25-meter-high metal structure that is reached by climbing a spiral staircase. An important detail: although the staircase is spiral and can be a bit intimidating, it is an open structure, which makes it perfectly suitable for those who suffer from claustrophobia. However, if you are afraid of heights, it might not be the best idea to go all the way to the top.
From the top, the views are stunning: a 360-degree panoramic view of the entire bay, with the water, the vegetation, and the town’s villas at your feet. On a clear day, the experience is truly magical.
Best of all: access is completely free. And it has quite extensive opening hours:
- Winter / Autumn: 8:30 to 19:30
- Spring: 8:30 to 22:00
- Summer: 7:00 to 22:00
It is open every day of the year, so no matter when you go, you will be able to visit it. Opening hours may vary.
Arcachon oysters: a classic you can’t miss
The Arcachon bay is one of the most important oyster producers in France. If you like seafood, this is a must-do. In the town, there are several restaurants and stalls where you can eat them very fresh, generally accompanied by rye bread, butter, and a glass of dry white wine from the region. The combination is perfect.
The most authentic place to eat oysters is the Port d’Arcachon or, if you dare to go a little outside the center, the oyster village of Le Canon, on the other side of the bay, in Cap Ferret. There, the experience is more rustic and prices tend to be more accessible.
You don’t need to be a big seafood fanatic to appreciate it. The freshness is so notable that even people who don’t usually eat them are surprised.
The Dune of Pilat: the great star of the excursion
Let’s be honest: for many travelers, the Dune of Pilat (Dune du Pilat in French) is the main reason to come to this area. And we perfectly understand it. It is the largest dune in all of Europe, with approximately 110 meters high and more than 3 km long. Some call it “the desert of France”, and looking at the photos from above, the nickname doesn’t seem exaggerated.
It is classified as the second most visited natural site in all of Europe, only behind Mont-Saint-Michel. That already gives you an idea of its scale.
The dune is about 8 km south of Arcachon, on the Atlantic coast. Arriving by car is the most practical option; there is a large parking lot at the entrance. Previously there was a 2-hour rate, but in 2026 the minimum price for a car is €10 for 4 hours. The parking lot is large and there are rarely problems finding a spot.
What the climb to the Dune of Pilat is like
In high season (mainly summer), there is a 105-meter wooden staircase that makes the climb easier. We went in low season, so there was no staircase: you have to climb directly through the sand. It’s a bit of a challenge, we won’t lie to you, but you can climb it perfectly fine. We saw families with small children climb without major problems. The important thing is to go at a comfortable pace and not rush.
Entry to the dune is free and can be visited throughout the year. You only pay for parking if you go by car.
Views from the top of the Dune of Pilat
Reaching the top is worth every step. The views are amazing: on one side, the Atlantic Ocean with moving waves; on the other, the immense Landes Forest, the largest man-made forest in Europe. You can also see the sandbank in the middle of the Arcachon bay and, on clear days, the tongue of land of Cap Ferret in the background.
The feeling of standing on that mountain of sand, with the sea on one side (it seems like everything is still) and the forest on the other, is something that is not easily forgotten. It’s one of those postcards you don’t expect to find in France and that leaves you speechless.
Practical tips for visiting the Dune of Pilat
- Bring shoes that you can take off easily (sand gets into everything).
- Bring water, especially in summer: the heat on the dune can be intense.
- Use sunscreen regardless of the time of year.
- If you can, arrive early to avoid the midday crowds.
- There are bathrooms, souvenir shops, and food at the entrance.
Cap Ferret: the other side of the bay
If you have a full day or even two, we recommend crossing the bay to Cap Ferret. There is a ferry service from Arcachon that takes you to the other side in minutes. Cap Ferret is a long and narrow strip of land, surrounded by the bay on one side and the ocean on the other.
The village is much quieter than Arcachon, with dirt roads, pine forests, and a relaxed atmosphere that has a lot of charm. The beaches on the ocean side are wild and windy; those on the bay side are calmer. There are also several oyster stalls which, as we mentioned before, are a recommended stop if you are in the area.
It is not essential if you only have half a day, but if you can stay overnight in the area or take the ferry, they say it is very worth it. We didn’t manage to do it.

Things to do in Arcachon and surroundings: more options to explore
In addition to what we have already mentioned, the area has other attractions that can complement the visit well:
- La Teste-de-Buch: municipality adjacent to Arcachon where the Dune of Pilat is technically located. It has its own charm and is less touristy.
- Biscarrosse: 40 km to the south, it has some of the wildest and least crowded beaches on the entire French Atlantic coast.
- Gujan-Mestras: another oyster village in the bay, with several picturesque ports and local produce markets.
- The Landes Forest: (Landes de Gascogne) the pine forest that surrounds the entire region is ideal for cycling routes or quiet walks among the trees.
If you combine Arcachon with a stay in Bordeaux —which also has a lot to see and do—, you can put together a getaway to the southwest of France that has nothing to envy to other more massive European destinations. For that, you can read our complete guide to France or also our articles on things to do in Strasbourg and about Eguisheim in Alsace, two destinations that we also visited during our French stay.
When is the best time to visit Arcachon?
The truth is that Arcachon has charm all year round, but there are more recommended times depending on what you are looking for:
- Summer (July-August): the atmosphere is livelier, the beaches are full, and all services are operational. But it is also the most crowded and expensive time. The Dune of Pilat can have queues to climb.
- Spring (April-June): pleasant weather, fewer tourists, and very green landscapes. Probably the best time to go if you can choose. We visited it during this time and it was an excellent experience.
- Autumn (September-October): the weather is still good, prices drop, and people leave. This is when we like coastal destinations the most.
- Winter (November-March): the town is left almost alone, but it has a special atmosphere. The dune in winter has something magical and you can experience it without crowds.
Where to stay in Arcachon?
If you decide to stay overnight in the area instead of returning to Bordeaux for the day, there are options for different budgets:
- In the center of the town of Arcachon there are boutique hotels and apartments with sea views, ideal for a romantic night or a long weekend.
- Cap Ferret has more exclusive and quiet accommodation, perfect for disconnecting.
- If you are looking for more economical options, La Teste-de-Buch or even Gujan-Mestras have accommodation at better prices and you are still very close to everything.
You can search and compare options on Booking.com, where we generally find the best rates.
