Why Tropea is worth a visit, even if just for a day

Tropea is not a destination that is easily explained with words. It is one of those places that has something special, a particular energy that blends natural beauty with the history and culture of southern Italy. The city is divided into two parts:

  • The upper part, the historic center, perched on an imposing cliff.
  • The lower part, from where you access the beaches of Tropea and the harbor.

From any viewpoint in the center, you can gaze at views that seem taken from a postcard: the intense blue water, the golden cliffs, the silhouette of the Sanctuary of Santa Maria dell’Isola floating on the rocks. It is an image that is not easily forgotten.

Although it is a very touristy destination in summer, it has the virtue that, even with people, it remains beautiful. And if you go in spring or September, you can enjoy it almost for yourself.

Things to do in Tropea in one day: the must-see spots

The historic center of Tropea is small and can be comfortably explored on foot in half a day. That leaves plenty of time for the beach and some short excursions in the surroundings. These are the spots you cannot miss.

Did you know that…?

The Sanctuary of Santa Maria dell’Isola stands on a promontory that was once an island, before joining the coast due to natural sedimentation.

The Sanctuary of Santa Maria dell’Isola: the icon of Tropea

If there is one place that defines Tropea, it is the Sanctuary of Santa Maria dell’Isola. This medieval church built on a rock that reaches into the sea is the most recognizable symbol of the city, and the view from the viewpoints in the center towards the sanctuary is, for us, the most beautiful image of the entire trip through Calabria.

You can go up to the sanctuary by walking up some stairs that border the rock. The interior is simple but has a lot of charm, and from above, the views of the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Rotonda beach are absolutely impressive. It is one of those corners that you want to photograph from every possible angle.

The climb is neither long nor physically demanding, and the walk itself is already worth it. Count on about 45 minutes to enjoy it without rushing.

The Spiaggia della Rotonda: the most famous beach in Tropea

Just at the foot of the sanctuary stretches the Spiaggia della Rotonda, also known as Rotonda Beach or Santa Maria dell’Isola beach. It is the most celebrated beach in Tropea and with good reason: the water is a crystal-clear blue-green, the sand is light, and the setting of the sanctuary on the cliffs makes it one of the most photogenic beaches in all of Italy.

We loved it. The waters are usually quite calm and the color combination is simply spectacular. It is very touristy and in summer it gets crowded, but since it is quite wide, you can always find a place to settle in. If you can, arrive early to grab the best spot and enjoy it with more tranquility.

It is worth clarifying that a large part of the beach has paid umbrellas and sunbeds, although there is also a free area. In high season, it is advisable to book or arrive in advance.

The Historic Center of Tropea and its viewpoints

The historic center of Tropea is one of the most charming we saw in southern Italy. Narrow stone streets, colorful houses piled up on the cliff, little shops with local products, and a very Mediterranean energy that invites you to get lost without a fixed course.

The main axis is the Corso Vittorio Emanuele, a pedestrian street full of bars, ice cream shops, and restaurants that leads to Piazza Ercole, the social heart of the city. It is the ideal place to sit and have a coffee, watch the movement, and soak up the daily life of Tropea.

The viewpoints of Tropea

But what really makes you fall in love with the center are the viewpoints. A few you cannot miss:

  • Affaccio del Corso: one of the most popular, with direct views of the sea and the sanctuary.
  • Belvedere Piazza del Cannone: spectacular, especially at sunset.
  • Cannone vista porto: from here you can see the port and the entire coast to the south.
  • Viewpoint of the Sanctuary of Santa Maria dell’Isola: which we already mentioned above, it is also great.

Count on at least two hours to walk around the center calmly, take photos, and sit down to eat something.

The Cathedral of Maria Santissima di Romania

In the heart of the historic center is the Cathedral of Maria Santissima di Romania, one of the oldest cathedrals in Calabria with Norman origins. Its facade is quite simple, but the interior holds some interesting works of art and has a solemn atmosphere that contrasts with the hustle and bustle of the streets outside.

The visit does not take long, but it is worth entering even for a few minutes. The cathedral is in the middle of the historic center, so you will naturally cross it on your tour.

The gastronomy of Tropea: flavors you cannot miss

Tropea has a very defined gastronomic identity, and if you are a lover of Italian food, you will be in paradise. The undisputed star of local cuisine is the Cipolla Rossa di Tropea, the famous red onion of Tropea, a sweet and crunchy variety that has a protected designation of origin and that appears in almost all dishes of the region: salads, jams, sauces, bruschette, and even ice creams.

In the shops in the center, you will see this onion in all its forms: fresh, preserved, transformed into condiments, or as a souvenir. If you have the opportunity, try a dish that includes it, you will not be disappointed.

In addition to the onion, Tropea offers everything one expects from Calabrian gastronomy: fresh pasta, fresh seafood, nduja (spicy sausage typical of the region), local cheeses, and desserts with almonds and bergamot. Piazza Ercole is a good area to eat: there are several restaurants with good value for money.

Did you know that…?
The “Cipolla Rossa di Tropea” has a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) and is sweeter; they even make ice cream with it.

How to get to Tropea

Getting to Tropea is quite accessible, although it requires some planning depending on where you are coming from.

By car

We always went in our own car from Pizzo, and it is undoubtedly the most comfortable option to explore Tropea and its surroundings. The route along the coast is beautiful and the trip from Pizzo takes about 30-40 minutes. Keep in mind that you cannot enter the historic center with the car: you have to park in the authorized parking lots before reaching the old town (there are several signposted) and go down on foot. Parking costs money, especially in high season.

By train

Tropea has its own train station, connected to the Lamezia Terme–Reggio Calabria line. It is a viable option if you are coming from cities like Lamezia Terme (from where you also arrive from the airport). The trip from Lamezia Terme takes approximately 60 minutes. However, trains on this line are not very frequent, so it is advisable to check schedules in advance on the Trenitalia website.

By plane

The nearest airport is Lamezia Terme International Airport, which has domestic and international flights. From the airport, you can take a bus or taxi to the Lamezia Terme train station and from there, the train to Tropea.

Things to do in Tropea and surroundings: excursions to complete the day

If you arrive by car, the area around Tropea has some places that are very worthwhile and that you can combine in the same day if you leave early.

Capo Vaticano

About 12 kilometers from Tropea is Capo Vaticano, one of the most spectacular points of the entire Coast of the Gods. The cliffs are imposing, the water is incredibly crystal clear, and there are several coves and hidden beaches like the Grotticelle Beach that deserve a visit. It is a little less massive than Tropea and has a wilder beauty. Highly recommended if you have your own transport.

Pizzo

Pizzo was our base for almost a month in the region and it is a town that completely won us over. It has a beautiful historic center with views of the sea, the famous tartufo di Pizzo (a filled ice cream that you must try), and an atmosphere much quieter than Tropea. It is about 30 minutes away by car and is ideal to combine with a visit to Tropea.

Did you know that…?

The coast surrounding Tropea is officially called “Costa degli Dei” (Coast of the Gods) due to the legendary beauty of its cliffs and crystal-clear waters.

When is the best time to visit Tropea?

The best time to visit Tropea is May, June, or September. In those months, the weather is pleasant for the beach, the sea is already warm (especially in September), and there is much less tourism than in July and August, when the city is completely full and prices skyrocket.

In July and August, Tropea is a very popular destination for Italians and European tourists. The beach can be quite crowded and it is advisable to book accommodation and parking well in advance. Even so, it remains beautiful and the summer energy has its charm.

In autumn and winter, many businesses close and the atmosphere is very different, but if you are interested in the historic center and architecture (not the beach), it can be a quiet and economical option.
