Introduction to things to do on the Island of Koh Kood (Ko Kut)

Before telling you things to do in Koh Kood, it’s worth locating it on the map. Koh Kood (also written as Ko Kut, Koh Kut, or Ko Kood) is located in eastern Thailand, in the Trat province, very close to the border with Cambodia. It is the fourth largest island in the country, but paradoxically one of the least developed.

And that is its magic. Koh Kood is jungle, pristine white sand beaches, dirt roads, local fishermen, and zero stress. There are no large shopping malls or massive parties. It is an ideal destination if you are looking to disconnect, slow down, and feel the most authentic Thailand.

For us, after traveling to many islands in the country, Koh Kood Thailand has something special. A slow pace, almost empty beaches, and an energy that invites you to stay longer than planned.

Koh Kood: our personal experience

Thailand 🇹🇭 was etched in our hearts, but Koh Kood holds a special place. We stayed 10 nights on the island, after traveling from Bangkok with a combined bus + ferry ticket, a very comfortable and affordable option.

Koh Kood brings back very fond memories. Dreamy beaches, motorbike rides, endless sunsets, and very few people around. We lived on the island; we didn’t visit it in a rush.

As digital nomads, having traveled the world for over 8 years, Koh Kood island continues to be in our personal top list of Southeast Asian islands.

How to get to Koh Kood from Bangkok

One of the most common questions is how to get to Koh Kood, and the good news is that it is easier than it seems.

Combined bus + ferry ticket (our experience)

We bought a ticket that included the bus from Bangkok + ferry to Koh Kood, all in one booking. We left early in the morning; it was about 5 hours by bus, then they stopped at a meeting point before reaching the ferry. There were restrooms, places to eat, buy something, etc. Then, by cart, they took us to the ferry, and we crossed to Koh Kood by ferry. The trip was long, but very well organized, and we arrived on the island in the afternoon.

This type of ticket usually includes:

  • Bus or minivan from Bangkok
  • Ferry or speedboat from the Trat port
  • Transfer to the hotel (in some cases)

It is the most practical option and the one we most recommend.

Other ways to get to Koh Kood

  • Plane ✈️ : fly from Bangkok to Trat and then take the ferry.
  • Car 🚗: rent a car to the port and cross by ferry.
  • Speedboat 🚤 : faster but more expensive.

Rent a motorbike in Koh Kood

The best way to explore the island is by motorbike. Distances are not great, and the roads pass through jungle, beaches, and local villages.

  • It is advisable to have an international driver’s license

We were never stopped, but it’s always better to do things properly.

Khlong Chao beach / Klong Chao Beach

Khlong Chao Beach is the most famous beach and one of the most beautiful in Koh Kood. It is located in the Tinkerbell Resort area, with white sand, turquoise water, and palm trees that create a postcard landscape.

It is ideal for swimming, relaxing, and doing some snorkeling, as the sea is usually calm and clear. In addition, it has areas of natural shade and parking for scooters, which makes it very comfortable to reach while touring the island by motorbike.

At sunset, this place transforms into one of the best spots to enjoy unforgettable sunsets, the kind that justify the trip and remain etched in your memory forever.

Bang Bao Beach

The beach is located within a natural bay, which makes the sea usually calm and waveless. The water is transparent, with turquoise and greenish tones, and the white sand gives it a totally paradise-like appearance. Although it is not very extensive, it is well maintained and is usually quite popular.

You can access it freely even if you are not staying at the resort, and even have a drink in the area’s restaurants. Entering through the Siam Beach Resort, on the left there is a beach ideal for swimming, and on the right, an area of rocks that connects by walking to the To The Sea resort. One of the most beautiful beaches in Koh Kood to enjoy without rush.

Ao Phrao Beach and Haad Khlong Hin

More remote beaches, ideal if you are looking for total solitude. In some, there may be sandflies; we recommend using repellent and an insulating mat.

This accommodation in Koh Kood is an excellent hidden gem, surrounded by coconut trees and far from the noise. The bungalows are modern, comfortable, and very well maintained, with air conditioning, a fan, and a comfortable bed.

➪ BOOK HERE – Rating: 9.1 ⭐️ Booking

We stayed 10 nights at Suan Maprao Ko Kut Resort, an ideal place to rest surrounded by nature, palm trees, and coconuts. It is very well located, just 12 minutes walking from Klong Chao Beach (1km approx), one of the best beaches in Koh Kood and perfect for watching the sunset. Plus, about 5 blocks away there is a small and very quiet beach, almost without people.

The cabins are spacious and comfortable, with a balcony, hammock, air conditioning, fridge, and Thai-style bathroom with hot water. Every day they left us two free bottles of water and changed the towels every few days.

The breakfast is included and is very complete, with Western and Thai options, as well as fresh fruit. The resort has its own restaurant at a good price and offers free coffee, tea, and hot water all day.

They also rent new motorbikes at a very good price, ideal for touring the whole island. There are fruit stands nearby and a mini-market just a few minutes away.

We highlight the service from Lit, always friendly and attentive. Without a doubt, we recommend Suan Maprao Ko Kut Resort and we would stay there again if we return to Koh Kood.

🔎 See prices and availability and secure your accommodation in one of the quietest places on the island. Payment is made in cash (there are ATMs on the island). We went with the company Boonsiri, which, with the transfer, dropped us off at the accommodation.

How many days to stay in Koh Kood

We recommend a minimum of 4 or 5 nights. If you can stay longer, even better. We were there for 10 nights and it flew by.

Koh Kood is not a place to rush.

Practical tips and recommendations

  • 🌞 Sunscreen and repellent
  • 🦟 For bites: Tiger Balm or “Yamon”
  • 🤝 Cultural respect: Sawad-dee, Khob khun
  • 🧳 Travel with medical insurance (highly recommended in Asia)

On less crowded or isolated beaches, there are usually sandflies (tiny biting gnats). It is recommended to use a thick tarp with some insulation to sit on, not directly on the sand.

And in case you get bitten, they sell Tiger Balm or a local balm known as “Yamon” (based on pronunciation), which helps a lot and is good for everything! To this day, we still use it.
