Where is Dhiffushi Island Maldives and What Makes It Special?

Dhiffushi is a local island located about 35 kilometers northeast of Malé, the capital of the Maldives. It is located in the heart of the Kaafu Atoll (North Malé). It is not a large island: one kilometer long by about 200 meters wide, just enough to walk around in about 20 minutes without rushing. But its small size is inversely proportional to its charm.

The reef that surrounds it is home to manta rays, turtles, reef sharks, and schools of fish of all colors. The beaches are pristine, and its geographical position makes it a privileged point to enjoy the best sunrises in the country.

What is special about Dhiffushi Island Maldives is its balance. It has tourism, but without losing the local life. It has incredible beaches, but without crowds. And it maintains much more affordable prices than other more famous local islands.

Unlike other tourist islands like Maafushi, where tourist infrastructure has taken center stage, Dhiffushi has opted for a quieter and more sustainable tourism. Local life remains the heart of the island, with fishermen returning at sunset and children playing barefoot in the streets.

The island stands out for its lush vegetation, which contrasts with the white sands and crystal-clear waters that surround it.

  • Public Ferry (Dhoni): It is the cheapest way, but also the slowest. Ferry number 308 departs from the Malé pier on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays at 9:00 AM and arrives in Dhiffushi after a three-hour journey. It costs less than 2 USD, ideal if you are not in a hurry and want to enjoy the scenery.
    • If you arrive from Velana International Airport, you must first take a ferry or water taxi or normal taxi (there is a bridge connecting) to Malé and then choose to take the ferry.
  • Private transfer: Ideal if you are looking for exclusivity and schedule flexibility.

Watch out, local islands in different atolls are not usually connected by speedboats. Which means you have to return to Malé and then take another speedboat to the next island.

As an important tip, there is a daily Speedboat from Thulusdhoo island to Dhiffushi island.

Vegetarian Options: Although the Maldives is very focused on fish, most places can prepare vegetable curry, dhal (lentils), and roti. Just ask for it in advance.

Traveler tip: Bottled water costs $1-2 USD in local stores. Most guesthouses offer free filtered water, take the opportunity to refill your reusable bottle. If you want to save money, eat at your guesthouse with half-board or full-board plans: it’s cheaper than eating out.

Thulusdhoo, on the other hand, is famous for surfing and its atmosphere is a little more lively. If you prefer a quiet destination, we believe that Dhiffushi is the best option (though we liked Thulusdhoo too).
