Introduction to Montreal at Christmas

Traveling to Canada in December is like stepping straight into a winter fairy tale. And although things to do in Montreal at Christmas was one of our biggest questions before traveling, the city ended up surprising us with its festive atmosphere, its lights, and some corners that look like they came straight out of a postcard. Montreal is lived in motion: giant markets full of people, outdoor skating rinks where tourists and locals mingle, music everywhere, and that unique contrast between European architecture and a modern vibe.

To be completely honest, and always from our personal taste as a traveling couple who have been exploring the world for over eight years, Montreal felt beautiful at Christmas, but it wasn’t the place that captivated us the most in the province. We were more impressed by Old Quebec (Vieux-Québec) for its medieval style and its more “Christmas-like” magic. Even so, Montreal has a special energy and many options to enjoy in December, especially if you like the mix of culture, gastronomy, and outdoor activities, even with sub-zero temperatures!

That’s why we put together this very complete guide: so you can discover for yourself everything the city has to offer during one of the most beautiful times of the year.

Where is Montreal and why is it so magical in December

Montreal is in the province of Quebec, in eastern Canada. It is the second-largest city in the country and a fascinating mix of French and English. In December, it dresses up in lights, Christmas fairs, music, free shows, and everything necessary to make you feel like you are inside a movie.

First impressions: weather, festive atmosphere, and Christmas spirit

The first thing you will notice upon arrival is the contrast: possibly streets with snow, but decorated with warm colors and thousands of lights. Everything is prepared for people to enjoy the outdoors, from skating rinks to cultural events. Montreal embraces winter instead of hiding it.

Planning your trip: temperature in Montreal at Christmas and what to pack

Before you start exploring, it is important to understand what weather awaits you. Montreal in winter is unforgiving, but it doesn’t want to scare you: it wants you to be well prepared.

Average temperatures and real feel

In December, the temperature ranges between -1°C and -7°C, but with the wind, it can feel colder. It is not uncommon to experience your first “-20°C wind chill”. But don’t worry, the city is prepared for this: heating everywhere, underground stations, and tunnels that connect buildings.

Clothing tips for traveling to the Canadian winter

What worked for us:

  • Parka-style thermal jacket
  • Thermal base layer
  • Fleece or thick sweater
  • Thermal pants under jeans
  • Waterproof gloves
  • Waterproof sneakers or snow boots
  • Thermal neck warmer
  • Hat that covers your ears well

The key is to dress in layers.

How to get around the city in the middle of winter

The metro works excellently, we used it to get around. There are also buses, but sometimes they are delayed by the weather, which the metro usually isn’t. Also, for destinations where the metro didn’t leave us very well or are further away, we used Uber, it works well and the price is very good. For long walks, check Google Maps beforehand because some sidewalks can get slippery.

Things to do in Montreal at Christmas: the center’s unmissables

We are entering the most anticipated part: the places you absolutely must visit.

Place Ville-Marie and its Christmas lookout

This iconic building and shopping center has a 360° observatory. At Christmas, it is filled with decorations and is one of the best places to see the snow-covered city from above. Going at sunset is magical.

La Rue Sainte-Catherine and its festive lights

It is one of the most important commercial streets and it looks incredible in December. You will find:

  • Luminous sculptures
  • Giant trees
  • Street music

Winter spectacles and free shows

The Quartier des Spectacles offers concerts, mapping, art installations, and activities open to the public. It is one of our favorite places in the center.

Complexe Desjardins and its Christmas decoration

An ideal shopping center to recover from the cold. It is very beautifully decorated at Christmas. It is easy to reach by metro and is very close to the Christmas markets (Grand Marché de Noël de Montréal), almost across the street.

Old Montreal at Christmas (Vieux-Montréal)

For us, Old Montreal is the Christmas heart of the city.

The Notre-Dame Basilica of Montreal and AURA, the light show

The spectacular Notre-Dame Basilica, one of the most beautiful churches we saw in Canada. The basilica is spectacular all year round, but at Christmas, it becomes even more imposing.

AURA is an immersive light show. It is recommended to book tickets in advance.

Place d’Armes

An iconic place, Place d’Armes, a historic square surrounded by iconic buildings that show the mix of styles that defines Montreal. At Christmas, between the lights and the decorated trees, everything becomes even more special. For us, it is a main stop to get into the festive mood as soon as you arrive in Old Montreal.

Stalls, music, and activities of the Marché de Noël

The streets of Old Montreal are filled with small markets where they sell handicrafts, chocolates, mulled wine, decorations, and local products. We loved the European atmosphere mixed with the Canadian hospitality.

Walk through the Old Port and the La Grande Roue wheel

Stroll through the Old Port of Montreal, Montreal Clock Tower (keep in mind that these are not short distances and as it is more open and next to the sea, it usually gets colder). The largest Ferris wheel in Canada allows you to see the whole city completely. If you are lucky, maybe it will snow while you go up.

Outdoor activities to enjoy Montreal at Christmas

The iconic Noche MTL in Quartier des Spectacles

It is a winter festival with giant light installations. Ideal for photos.

Winter hikes on Mont-Royal

Mont-Royal is beautiful all year round, but in winter it looks like an enchanted forest. The views from The Montreal lookout: “Kondiaronk Belvedere” are among the best in the city. To get to the lookout you have to climb Mount Royal, by stairs or by trails that take a little more time.

From the top, you can see the whole city and the river: We were lucky 🥰 to have a sunny day ☀️ although freezing 🥶 to enjoy the views of Montreal.
We love to see places from different perspectives.

Ice skating in Quartier des spectacles

It is also free, if you have your own skates. It is close to the main Christmas market. You will always have fun skating.

Poutine in Montreal

If there is one thing you must try in Montreal, it is poutine, Quebec’s most famous dish. It consists of french fries with cheese curds and hot gravy, a simple but comforting combination, ideal for the winter cold. In Montreal, you will find it everywhere, from classic places like La Banquise to more modern versions with extra toppings. After walking through Christmas markets and ice rinks, a nice hot poutine is the best plan to recover energy.

Where to stay in Montreal at Christmas

When choosing where to stay in Montreal at Christmas, the most recommended thing is to look for accommodation in areas that are well-connected and walkable, especially because of the cold.

The most practical neighborhoods are:

These places concentrate attractions, restaurants, and quick access to the metro.

Staying near the center allows you to spend less time outdoors and make better use of the short winter days, something key if you travel in December.

Where to Sleep in Montreal - Map & Prices

On the map below, you can zoom in, move around, and filter by your travel dates to see real-time accommodation prices in Montreal.

Where we stayed: M Montreal Hostel

During our stays in Montreal, we stayed twice at M Montreal Hostel. We chose a private studio that allowed us to cook and save on meals, which was ideal with the cold and the high season prices. It also has a terrace, but it can be used very little in winter.

➪ BOOK HERE

The hostel also offers shared kitchen areas if you don’t need your own space. The neighborhood wasn’t the nicest in the city, but the price-location ratio was very good: it is close to the metro and at a walkable distance from many key points like the center and Old Montreal, which made it a practical option to explore the city in November / December / January.

Travel insurance to enjoy Montreal at Christmas without worries

Traveling to Montreal at Christmas is an incredible experience, but being well prepared is key, especially because of the cold and the cost of health care in Canada. We never travel without travel insurance, as any unforeseen event, from a fall on the ice to a flight cancellation or lost luggage, can make a big difference. In winter, these risks increase, and it is better to be covered.

For a trip to Canada, we recommend IATI Seguros, which offers comprehensive coverage: medical assistance with a high insured sum, thefts, delays, and cancellations. It is not mandatory to enter Canada, but it is fundamental to travel calmly and enjoy Montreal without worries, even in the middle of winter.
