El Burro Beach<\/strong> (Playa del Burro) is one of those beaches we keep coming back to whenever we’re in the north of Fuerteventura. It’s inside Corralejo Natural Park, a few minutes from town, and it has everything that makes the Grandes Playas special: fine, pale sand, turquoise-green water, the dunes in the background and, when the wind allows, a calm bay for swimming.<\/p>\n

Online you’ll also find it as Glass Beach<\/strong>, although that isn’t its official name. In this guide we tell you exactly where it is, how to get there by car or by bus, where to park, what to bring (because there’s absolutely nothing there) and what else to see nearby. 1. Where El Burro Beach is<\/h2>\n

El Burro Beach is on the northeast coast of Fuerteventura, on the stretch of the Grandes Playas<\/strong> that runs along Corralejo Dunes Natural Park<\/a>, south of the town of Corralejo. This whole protected area covers about 2,668 hectares of the municipality of La Oliva and includes the dune field and Monta\u00f1a Roja, which you can see from the beach.<\/p>\n

The Grandes Playas are really a string of beaches joined by kilometres of sand: El Burro is one of them, and very close by are others such as Playa del Moro and Bajo Negro, in front of the hotels. 2. Why is it called Glass Beach?<\/h2>\n

If you looked this beach up on Google Maps or Instagram, it probably came up as Glass Beach<\/strong>. It’s a name that caught on among travellers, but you won’t find it in the official guides: the Cabildo and the Government of the Canary Islands call it Playa del Burro<\/strong> or simply El Burro<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

We mention it because it causes quite a bit of confusion: sometimes it gets mixed up with Playa del Moro<\/strong>, another beach of the Grandes Playas, very close by. Our advice is simple: put \u201cPlaya del Burro\u201d into your GPS and, once you’re there, walk along the shore. 3. What El Burro Beach is like<\/h2>\n

The first thing that catches your eye is the colour of the water: a crystal-clear green that changes with the light and the tide. The sand is fine and pale, and the beach is so wide that you always find a spot, even in high season.<\/p>\n

A calm bay for swimming<\/h3>\n

In the bay the water is usually quite calm, so it’s ideal for swimming or just floating for a while. There are a few stones at the water’s edge, but mostly you’ll be walking on sand. When the wind blows hard, the sea gets choppier: always check the water before you go in.<\/p>\n

The stone windbreaks<\/h3>\n

If there’s one thing that defines this beach, it’s the stone windbreaks<\/strong>: little half-moon-shaped enclosures of volcanic stone that shelter you from the wind. In Fuerteventura the wind is in charge, and these shelters make the difference between an uncomfortable beach day and a perfect one. There aren’t many of them, so if you want one, get there early.<\/p>\n

Long walks with views of the dunes<\/h3>\n

Another plan we love is walking. From El Burro you can walk for kilometres along the shore with the dunes on one side, the sea on the other and Monta\u00f1a Roja in the background. 4. Kitesurfing and windsurfing at El Burro Beach<\/h2>\n

El Burro is one of the kitesurfing spots<\/strong> on the Grandes Playas of Corralejo. On windy days the beach fills up with colourful kites and it’s a great show to watch from the sand, even if you don’t do the sport yourself. You’ll also see plenty of windsurfing.<\/p>\n

If you want to give it a try, it’s best to do it with a school: the wind on this coast can be strong and the currents change. 5. Services: what there is (and isn’t) at El Burro Beach<\/h2>\n

This is the most important thing to know before you go: there are no services at El Burro Beach<\/strong>. No toilets, no showers, no bars and no shade. You’re inside a natural park and, apart from the road and the parking areas, it’s all sand and sea.<\/p>\n
