Why Kanazawa must be on your Japan route<\/h2>\n

Kanazawa remained almost intact during World War II, making it one of the Japanese cities with the most preserved historical heritage. It is the capital of Ishikawa Prefecture<\/strong>, is located on the coast of the Sea of Japan, and was historically the territory of the Maeda clan, one of the most powerful in the country after the Tokugawa shogunate.<\/p>\n

That history is felt in every corner. The geisha districts still function as they did centuries ago, artisans work with techniques passed down from generation to generation, and the Kenroku-en Garden remains one of the three most important gardens in all of Japan. It is not an open-air museum: it is a living city.<\/p>\n

We arrived by high-speed train from Tokyo<\/strong> (about 2.5 hours by Shinkansen to Toyama and then a connection, or directly on the Kagayaki\/Hakutaka since the opening of the new line). Giving it 3 nights was one of the best decisions of the trip. Kenroku-en Garden: an absolute must-see<\/h2>\n

There are places that exceed expectations. The Kenroku-en Garden<\/strong> is one of them. It is considered one of the three most beautiful gardens in Japan along with K\u014draku-en in Okayama and Kairaku-en in Mito, and when we walked through it, we understood why.<\/p>\n

Its name in Japanese means \u00abgarden of the six attributes\u00bb<\/strong>: spaciousness, solemnity, meticulousness, panoramic views, abundance of water, and antiquity. All of that is present. The garden has over 300 years of history and occupies about 114,000 square meters full of ponds, waterfalls, ancient pine trees, and stone paths that invite you to get lost.<\/p>\n

We went first thing in the morning to avoid the largest crowds, and it was a completely different experience from what we imagined. The morning light on the ponds… it’s something unique. The most photographed symbol is the Kotoji-toro, a stone lantern with two legs of different heights reflected in the Kasumiga-ike pond. Iconic.<\/p>\n

Kanazawa Castle: history in the heart of the city<\/h2>\n
Right next to the Kenroku-en garden is Kanazawa Castle (Kanazawa-jo), the historical seat of the Maeda clan. The original castle was destroyed by several fires over the centuries, and what you see today is partly a reconstruction, but it remains impressive.<\/p>\n
The park surrounding the castle is huge and can be explored freely. The interior of some buildings has an entrance fee. What caught our attention most was the visual contrast between the white walls and the dark gray lead roof tiles: a combination that gives it a very particular character.<\/p>\n
If you combine the visit with Kenroku-en, you can dedicate a full morning to this area and be more than satisfied. Things to do in Kanazawa Japan: the geisha districts, a journey to the past<\/h2>\n
This is where Kanazawa really shines. The city has three historical geisha districts: Higashi Chaya, Kazue-machi, and Nishi Chaya. Higashi Chaya: the most famous geisha district<\/h3>\n
Higashi Chaya is the best known and most extensive of the three. The wooden houses with their lattice windows repeat along the main street and create an atmosphere that seems taken from another era. A beauty! The ochaya (teahouses where geishas work) are still in operation, although to visit them as a guest you need an introduction from a regular client or to book in advance.<\/p>\n
What you can do is visit some that have opened up to tourism and walk the main street quietly. Kazue-machi Chaya: where we found peace<\/h3>\n
This district is less crowded than Higashi but has something special that is difficult to explain. It is located on the banks of the Asanogawa River and the teahouses are reflected in the water when the day is calm. You can breathe peace \u270c\ufe0f in this place. Seriously.<\/p>\n
Walking through it at night, when the paper lanterns are lit and the river reflects the lights… it’s an experience you won’t find in any official guide. The smallest of the three and also the quietest<\/strong>. It has a very compact but very well-preserved main street. Omicho Market: gastronomy and local life<\/h2>\n
If there is one place in Kanazawa that made us happy, it was Omicho Market. It is the most important food market in the city and has been running for over 300 years. It has hundreds of stalls with fresh fish, seafood, vegetables, fruits, and everything you can imagine.<\/p>\n
Kanazawa is considered one of the best culinary cities in Japan. Its coastline on the Sea of Japan ensures access to top-quality seafood and fish. Snow crab (Zuwaigani) is the star dish of the winter season, but at any time of the year, you will find prawns, sea urchins, and other sea treasures.<\/p>\n
We had breakfast there a couple of mornings. There are several stalls offering seafood donburi (a bowl of rice with seafood on top), which are an unmissable gastronomic experience. Nagamachi Samurai District<\/h2>\n
A few minutes’ walk from the center is Nagamachi, the old samurai district. The cobblestone streets, adobe walls, and canals running between the houses create an environment very different from the rest of the city.<\/p>\n
In the Edo period, the samurais lived in this district organized according to their rank within the Maeda clan. Today you can walk the car-free streets and enter some residence converted into a museum. Many travelers recommend the Nomura-ke House as one of the best to visit to learn how the life of a high-ranking samurai was.<\/p>\n
What we liked most about Nagamachi was the feeling that time stopped there. Art and culture: the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art<\/h2>\n
Kanazawa has a very active cultural scene and one of its most striking points is the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art. The building itself is already a work of art: a circular glass disc designed by the SANAA studio that integrates with the urban environment.<\/p>\n
Many travelers recommend visiting it especially for the permanent installation \u00abSwimming Pool\u00bb by Leandro Erlich, a pool that from above looks full of water but allows you to be \u00abinside\u00bb looking up. It is one of the most photographed art installations in Japan.<\/p>\n
There are free access areas and others that require an entrance fee.
