The whale shark excursion, the great must-do of Dhigurah

Dhigurah is adjacent to the South Ari Marine Protected Area, the only place in the Maldives where the whale shark can be seen throughout the year. From here, the boat reaches the sighting area in 15 or 20 minutes, whereas from further islands the trip can take two or three hours.

The standard excursion lasts between 3 and 5 hours, is done with snorkeling (no need to dive), and is usually combined with looking for manta rays. The prices we saw on the island ranged from 60 to 120 USD per person depending on the operator and duration. We booked it directly at the accommodation the day before, which is usually cheaper than booking online.

No one can guarantee a sighting: it is a wild animal and is not fed to attract it, as happens in other destinations.
