1. Bikini Beach, the beach that justifies the trip<\/h2>\n

We start with the obvious, because here the obvious is spectacular. Ukulhas’ Bikini Beach occupies almost a kilometer of the island’s south coast and is one of the longest of all local islands in the Maldives. In our case, the hotel was facing the beach and had loungers, although you had to go early to get a spot in the front row. The beach was very spacious and there was plenty of room, though with little shade. In the late afternoon, it gets even more beautiful because the tide goes out and a new strip of sand appears that wasn’t there in the morning.<\/p>\n

Things to keep in mind:<\/strong> it is the only area of the island where foreigners can wear swimwear or bikinis. Outside of this sector, even walking back to the accommodation, you should wear a t-shirt and shorts or a sarong. 2. The house reef: snorkeling ten meters from the shore<\/h2>\n

If there is one of the things to do in Ukulhas that sets it apart from other local islands, it is its house reef. In front of Bikini Beach, the reef starts practically as soon as you enter the water: no need to pay for any excursion or get on a boat to see live corals, schools of parrotfish, and surgeonfish everywhere.<\/p>\n

We would go in with mask and snorkel two or three times a day, without a plan and without a schedule. The coral wall drops vertically quite quickly, so in a few strokes, you are already over the deep blue. If you don’t have much experience, stay on the inside: the current on the edge can pick up suddenly when the tide changes.<\/p>\n

TIP:<\/strong> bring your own snorkel gear from home. Renting it on the island costs between 5 and 10 dollars per day, and in six nights you have already paid for a new one. 3. Swimming with green turtles without paying for an excursion<\/h2>\n

One of the things to do in Ukulhas that surprised us the most was how easy it was to see turtles. In the eastern part of the reef, where the coral forms lower gardens, they feed almost every day. We saw turtles four out of the six days, always between 8:00 and 10:00 AM, which is when the water is calmest.<\/p>\n

It is not a guaranteed show or an aquarium: they are wild animals and there are days when none appear. But the odds here are much better than on other islands where they sell you a \u00abswim with turtles\u00bb excursion for 40 dollars. Here you simply get in the water and wait.<\/p>\n

Golden rule:<\/strong> do not touch or chase them, and keep at least three meters of distance. If a turtle surfaces to breathe and you are on top of it, you stress it out and it leaves. 4. The northern tip and its sandspit<\/h2>\n

Walking toward the northern end of the island, passing the guesthouse area, a sandspit appears that changes shape depending on the season.<\/p>\n

We went in the afternoon and we were almost always alone. 5. The harbor at sunset: baby sharks and rays<\/h2>\n

This is the free activity we repeated the most. Every afternoon, when the fishermen return and clean their catch of the day at the pier, small blacktip reef sharks, nurse sharks, and some rays come to eat the scraps. They are clearly visible from above, with the water illuminated by the harbor lights.<\/p>\n

It’s a very local moment: Maldivian families with children, some travelers, and not much else. We would sit on the edge of the pier watching the water until it got dark. One of those simple things you remember more than the expensive excursions.<\/p>\n

Schedule:<\/strong> between 17:30 and 19:00 approximately, depending on when the boats come in. 6. The recycling center, the island’s pride<\/h2>\n

It sounds strange to put a waste plant among the things to do in Ukulhas, but it makes perfect sense. Ukulhas was the first inhabited island in the Maldives to set up a serious waste management system, back in 2011, and in 2014 it received the Green Leaf Award from the government. Today they separate waste into organic and non-organic, compost, recycle, and have banned single-use plastics.<\/p>\n

Why does it matter? Because you notice it as soon as you get off the boat. After having seen the less beautiful side of other local islands, where trash is burned at the tip of the island, arriving in Ukulhas and seeing separated bins every fifty meters and immaculate streets is a huge contrast. 7. Getting lost in the sandy streets of the town<\/h2>\n

Among all the things to do in Ukulhas, this is the part that is usually skipped. The town is small and can be covered in half an hour, but it’s worth doing slowly. The streets are made of compacted, snow-white sand, with low-rise houses painted in colors, overflowing bougainvillea, and wooden swings on almost every corner.<\/p>\n

Those swings (the famous \u00abjoali\u00bb) are the social center of the island: people sit there to chat when the sun goes down. We sat down several times and someone always ended up asking us where we were from. 8. The mosque and the island’s daily life<\/h2>\n

The main mosque marks the rhythm of the day with the five calls to prayer. You cannot enter if you are not Muslim, but listening to the call in the afternoon while walking around the island is part of the experience. On Fridays at noon, almost everything closes for a couple of hours for the main prayer, including some shops and even certain boat transfers.<\/p>\n

Around it, you will find the school, the health center, the soccer field where they play every afternoon, and several small stores that sell everything from water to imported cookies. 9. The west beach and the prettiest sunset in Ukulhas<\/h2>\n

While Bikini Beach faces south, the west coast is where the sun sets. It is not a swimming beach (there is more stone and dead coral on the shore), but it is the best point on the island to watch the sunset, with the boats anchored in the foreground and the sky turning from orange to violet in a matter of minutes.<\/p>\n

If you are lucky, you can also see dolphins in the distance from there early in the morning. 10. Snorkeling with manta rays at the atoll’s spots<\/h2>\n

One of the star excursions and one of the essentials in Ukulhas if you travel during the right season. The North Ari Atoll has several cleaning stations where mantas come close to the reef, and all guesthouses organize half-day trips.<\/p>\n

Here is our dose of honesty: it is not guaranteed. It depends on the season, the current, and luck. We went out once and didn’t see any, and other guests from the same guesthouse saw them the next day. If they sell it to you as something guaranteed, be suspicious. Most serious operators offer to repeat the trip at half price if there was no sighting.<\/p>\n

11. Excursion to a sandbank, the classic of the Maldives<\/h2>\n

A sandbank in the middle of the ocean, without a single palm tree, with turquoise water swirling around. It is the postcard we all have in our heads when we think of the Maldives, and from Ukulhas, it takes about 20 or 30 minutes by boat.<\/p>\n

We did our first excursion to a sandbank on another island, and the feeling of standing on a spot of sand in the middle of nowhere is hard to explain. If you’ve never done one, do it: it’s one of those things worth every dollar. 12. Sunset fishing with local fishermen<\/h2>\n

Another of the most economical and, for us, most fun trips. You go out in a traditional dhoni when the sun begins to set, you get a hand line (no rods) and fish the old-fashioned way while the sky catches fire.<\/p>\n

The best part comes after: if you caught something, the guesthouse cooks it for dinner. We weren’t exactly the best fishermen on the boat, hahaha, but we ate anyway thanks to the generosity of the rest. 13. Diving at the best spots in the North Ari Atoll<\/h2>\n

If you dive, you are in one of the best places in the world to do so. Around Ukulhas there are several spots accessible in a few minutes by boat, with channels where reef sharks, turtles, napoleon wrasses, and, depending on the season, whale sharks can be found in the southern part of the atoll.<\/p>\n

We don’t dive, we snorkel, so we tell you this with some distance: many travelers who stayed with us agreed that the diving centers in Ukulhas are good but more expensive than those on other local islands. 14. Rasdhoo and Madivaru, the neighboring island you visit for the day<\/h2>\n

Rasdhoo is about 50 minutes away by local ferry and is one of the easiest excursions from Ukulhas to organize. In addition to the town, you can reach Madivaru, a small islet with an interior lagoon of an incredible color.<\/p>\n

The Rasdhoo + Ukulhas combination is, in fact, one of the most recommended itineraries for those who have a week in the Maldives and don’t want to go back to Mal\u00e9 between islands. It can be done in a day if the ferry schedules allow, although we recommend sleeping at least one night there. We stayed there. At the moment there was no direct Speedboat, but local snorkel boats can organize the trip to Thoddoo. As long as the tide helps. 16. Day visit to a nearby resort<\/h2>\n

Of all the things to do in Ukulhas and surroundings, this is one of the plans most sought after by those who choose a local island: spend a day in a luxury resort in the atoll without paying 800 dollars a night. From Ukulhas, there are several resorts within a short boat distance, and many sell day passes that include transfer, pool access, lunch, and, in some cases, alcohol (something impossible on the local island).<\/p>\n

Prices are around 100-150 euros per person depending on the resort and season, and they are booked through the guesthouse with one or two days’ notice. It’s not cheap, but if you want the overwater photo and a glass of wine by the sea, it’s the only way to do it without changing accommodation.<\/p>\n

Our honest opinion:<\/strong> we didn’t do it. We prefer to spend that money on more nights on a local island, and the beach in Ukulhas is in no way inferior to that of a resort. 17. Dinner on the beach at sunset<\/h2>\n

Various guesthouses and some island cafes set up tables directly on the sand of Bikini Beach when the sun goes down, with lanterns and the sea three meters away. It is the classic romantic plan in Ukulhas and you have to book it in advance, usually the day before.<\/p>\n

The menu usually consists of fresh fish of the day, rice, Maldivian curry, and fruit. No alcohol, obviously: the most you will find are natural juices and non-alcoholic drinks. 18. Excursion to an uninhabited picnic island<\/h2>\n

Different from the sandbank: here we are talking about a truly deserted island, with vegetation, palm trees, and beach, but with no one living there. Guesthouses organize half-day or full-day trips with lunch included and usually combine it with a snorkeling stop.<\/p>\n

19. Tour Ukulhas by bicycle<\/h2>\n

The island can be walked entirely, but several guesthouses lend or rent bicycles for a few dollars a day. Riding a bike through the sandy streets, crossing from the beach to the town and from the town to the harbor, is a different way to experience the pace of the place.<\/p>\n

It is especially useful if you stay at the northern end and Bikini Beach is twenty minutes away: by bike, it’s five. 20. Sunrise from the east coast<\/h2>\n

If the sunset is on the west side, the sunrise is on the east, and very few people take advantage of it. We got up twice before 6:00 AM and the reward was a completely empty beach, the sea like a mirror, and the most beautiful light of the day for photos.<\/p>\n

Ukulhas has several guesthouses and accommodations; that’s good news: there is competition and prices remain reasonable. You can find everything from basic rooms for about 40 dollars to beach-front options around 120. Almost all include breakfast, and many offer half-board, which is convenient because dining options on the island are limited.<\/p>\n

Accomodation in Ukulhas<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

We chose a hotel facing Bikini Beach, which on an island of this size means \u00abclose to everything.\u00bb All the things to do in Ukulhas are less than twenty minutes walking, so what matters is not the distance but that the accommodation organizes the transfers: they are the ones who get you the speedboat and wait for you at the pier.<\/p>\n
