Seville at Christmas is one of the best surprises we’ve had in our years of traveling: we stayed for 3 weeks at the end of December and ended up going out for walks every evening. In this guide, we tell you 24 things to do in Seville, which ones we liked best, updated prices, a map with all the spots, where to sleep, and how to get there.<\/p>\n

1. The lighting of Avenida de la Constituci\u00f3n, the heart of Christmas in Seville<\/h2>\n

If there’s one place in the city that we loved, it’s this one. Every December, Avenida de la Constituci\u00f3n becomes the main stage for the lighting: in the last edition, 32 light-up trees over seven meters tall were installed from Plaza Nueva to Puerta de Jerez, plus giant light spheres hanging over the road.<\/p>\n

We walked down there almost every night and it never felt repetitive. It is pedestrian-friendly, so you can walk calmly, there are street musicians, roasted chestnut stalls with that characteristic smoke, and entire families taking photos with the Giralda in the background. TIPS:<\/strong> the best time for photos is not at 9:00 PM, when it is crowded, but right when they turn the lights on at 6:30 PM. There is still some blue light in the sky, and the contrast with the warm lights is much nicer. 2. The light and sound show at Plaza de San Francisco<\/h2>\n

A few meters from the Avenue, in Plaza de San Francisco, they set up a light and sound show projected onto the facade of the City Hall. It is free, lasts a few minutes, and repeats several times every night.<\/p>\n

Something funny happened to us: the first time we arrived just as it was ending and we missed it. We returned the next day half an hour early, stood at the corner of Calle Sierpes, and that’s when we saw it in full. The Plateresque facade of the City Hall lends itself perfectly to mapping because of its relief, and the result is far superior to other cities where they project onto flat walls.<\/p>\n

In the last edition, they rerouted the overhead lines in the square specifically to clean up the visual pollution of the show, so it looks better than ever.<\/p>\n

Keep in mind:<\/strong> the screenings get very crowded on weekends and on December 5, 6, 7, and 8 (the Constitution and Immaculate Conception bridge holiday). 3. The tree at Puerta de Jerez, the classic photo<\/h2>\n

The large Christmas tree at Puerta de Jerez is an icon. It is set up there every year, and every year it is packed with people. The good thing is that you can go inside the tree, so the photo from the inside looking up is the one that is really worth it. It’s a quick, five-minute stop, but it’s right on the path between Avenida de la Constituci\u00f3n and Palacio de San Telmo, so it fits perfectly into the night walk.<\/p>\n

4. The illuminated Nativity scene at Palacio de San Telmo<\/h2>\n

This was our absolute favorite and the plan we recommend the most from the entire list. On the facade and surroundings of the Palacio de San Telmo, on Avenida de Roma, they set up a Nativity scene with large-format illuminated figures: the Three Kings on their camels, the Nativity, stars, and garlands. They present it as the largest illuminated Nativity scene in Spain and, honestly, the scale is impressive.<\/p>\n

We went twice. The first time on a random Tuesday at 7:00 PM and you could walk calmly; the second time on a Saturday at 9:00 PM and there was a line to pass through the central section. If you can, go on a weekday.<\/p>\n

It is a five-minute walk from Puerta de Jerez, so it’s all done on the same trip. 5. The Nativity Fair, the most Sevillian market<\/h2>\n

The Feria del Bel\u00e9n<\/em> (Nativity Fair) is the city’s most deeply rooted Christmas tradition and, for us, the most authentic market in Seville at Christmas. It is installed on Calle Fray Ceferino Gonz\u00e1lez and the area of Avenida de la Constituci\u00f3n, next to the Archivo de Indias and the Cathedral.<\/p>\n

It is not a Christmas market in the German style with mulled wine and sausages: here, what they sell are artisanal nativity scene figures. Shepherds, sheep, cork houses, moss, aluminum foil rivers, Three Kings of all sizes and prices. The artisans have been doing this for generations, and many stalls are family-run.<\/p>\n

We stayed for a while watching a lady choosing figure by figure to complete her home nativity scene. That is the kind of scene that doesn’t appear in any official guide and makes the stop worthwhile.<\/p>\n

TIPS:<\/strong> small figures start at around 3-5 \u20ac and are a much nicer (and cheaper) souvenir than any Giralda magnet. 6. The Nativity Scene Route, one of the essentials in Seville at Christmas<\/h2>\n

The Ruta de los Belenes<\/em> (Nativity Scene Route) is another thing to do in Seville in December that doesn’t cost a euro. It starts at the beginning of the month and brings together dozens of nativity scenes scattered through churches, brotherhoods, foundations, and public buildings in the center.<\/p>\n

The most visited ones are the monumental nativity scene at City Hall, the one at the Archivo de Indias, those of the Fundaci\u00f3n Cajasol, and those of several brotherhoods in the old town. Each has its own schedule and opening date, so it is worth checking the official list published by the City Hall at the beginning of December.<\/p>\n

We did four or five in the same afternoon walking, and it was enough. After the sixth one, they all start looking the same, why lie to you? Choose the two or three monumental ones and don’t obsess over completing them all.<\/p>\n

Keep in mind:<\/strong> brotherhood nativity scenes usually only open for a few hours in the afternoon and close on December 24, 25, 31, and January 1. 7. Naturaleza Encendida: the gardens of the Alc\u00e1zar illuminated at night<\/h2>\n

This is the big plan that almost no Spanish guide places where it belongs, and for us, it is one of the best things to do in Seville at Christmas. Naturaleza Encendida<\/em> is a night tour of light, sound, and art installations set up inside the gardens of the Real Alc\u00e1zar. Yes: you enter the Alc\u00e1zar at night, with the monument closed to normal tourism, and walk through it illuminated.<\/p>\n

The tour lasts about 45 minutes, walking along the usual paths (orange trees, hedges, ponds, pavilions), and each area of the garden becomes a different scene, with its own color palette and soundtrack. In the last edition, titled \u00abArras\u00bb, the common thread was the 500th anniversary of the wedding parade of Charles V and Isabella of Portugal, with seven arches of light for seven areas of the garden.<\/p>\n

Keep in mind:<\/strong> it is a separate ticket, it has nothing to do with the daytime Alc\u00e1zar entrance, and you have to book it in advance because Friday and Saturday sessions sell out. Those born or residing in Seville have a 50% discount with ID. It happens even if it rains, so wear closed shoes.<\/p>\n

TIPS:<\/strong> choose a weekday slot and as early as possible (7:00 PM). We went on a Monday and there were far fewer people than on the 9:00 PM sessions on the weekend, which is when everyone goes. 8. Setalandia, the market under Las Setas<\/h2>\n

Under the structure of Las Setas, in Plaza de la Encarnaci\u00f3n, a Christmas market geared primarily towards families is set up every year, popularly known as Setalandia<\/em>. In the last edition, it ran from November 28 to January 5.<\/p>\n

There are wooden stalls with crafts, sweets, decorations, and toys, as well as activities for kids. It is not huge, but the setting is unbeatable: the wooden structure of Las Setas illuminated above the stalls looks spectacular at night.<\/p>\n

We walked by several times because it was on our way, and there was always a good atmosphere. 9. Climbing to the viewpoint of Las Setas at night<\/h2>\n

We did this plan almost at the end of our 21 days and regretted not doing it sooner. The viewpoint of Las Setas (Metropol Parasol) has 250 meters of walkways about 27-28 meters high, with a 360-degree view over the historic center.<\/p>\n

At night, with the city illuminated for Christmas, the Giralda standing out among the rooftops, and the Aurora<\/em> light show they set up on the structure itself, the experience changes completely compared to the daytime visit.<\/p>\n

10. The Cathedral and the Giralda, without the summer queues<\/h2>\n

One of the great advantages of visiting Seville at Christmas is that the monuments are much less crowded than in spring or summer. Seville Cathedral is the largest Gothic cathedral in the world, and the Giralda, its bell tower, is climbed by ramps instead of stairs, so the ascent is surprisingly comfortable.<\/p>\n

In these traveling years, we have seen many cathedrals, but the volume of the interior of this one is really hard to capture in photos. And in December, with the nativity scene set up and Christmas carol choir rehearsals, the atmosphere is quite special.<\/p>\n

11. The Real Alc\u00e1zar, one of the places to see in Seville at Christmas<\/h2>\n

The Real Alc\u00e1zar is probably the most visited monument in the city, and in high season the queues are eternal. In December, however, you get in reasonably quickly. We went on a Wednesday mid-morning and waited less than fifteen minutes.<\/p>\n

The gardens in winter have fewer flowers, it’s true, but also fewer people and a low light that is much appreciated for photos. 12. The Plaza de Espa\u00f1a and Maria Luisa Park in winter<\/h2>\n

The Plaza de Espa\u00f1a is free, it’s open 24 hours, and in December it’s a different world. Without the infernal heat of summer, without the crowds of high season, you can walk through the whole thing calmly and sit on the tile benches of the provinces without fighting for a spot.<\/p>\n

We went several times and the best was a Sunday at 8:30 in the morning. It was practically empty, with low fog over the canal and golden light coming through the towers. One of those mornings you don’t forget.<\/p>\n

Maria Luisa Park, right next door, sets up a special souk<\/em> for Christmas with a photo booth and activities for kids. It’s a quiet and free walk to do mid-morning, between monument and monument.<\/p>\n

Keep in mind:<\/strong> renting a boat on the canal costs a few euros, and in winter there is almost no queue. 13. Sierpes, Tetu\u00e1n, and Cuna: the most illuminated streets<\/h2>\n

Although in the last edition more than 300 streets and squares distributed across all districts were lit up, there are three that concentrate the best commercial lighting in the center: Sierpes, Tetu\u00e1n, and Cuna. They are covered in the same twenty-minute walk and connect Plaza de San Francisco with Plaza del Duque.<\/p>\n

The main streets in the center are pedestrian, so you walk comfortably even with many people. Also, at Christmas, historic shops put on their best attire: decorated display windows, their own lights, and music.<\/p>\n

We especially liked the Sierpes section at night, when the garlands crossing from sidewalk to sidewalk form a kind of roof of light. 14. Getting lost in the Santa Cruz neighborhood at nightfall<\/h2>\n

The Santa Cruz neighborhood, the old Jewish quarter, is a labyrinth of narrow alleyways, whitewashed courtyards, and tiny squares. By day it is full of guided groups; from 7:00 PM it clears out and changes completely.<\/p>\n

We went out for aimless walks almost every night. Callej\u00f3n del Agua, Plaza de Do\u00f1a Elvira, Plaza de los Venerables, Calle Pimienta… with the discreet Christmas lights on the balconies and some open courtyards, it looks like another place.<\/p>\n

It is free, requires no booking, and is probably the cheapest and nicest thing you can do in Seville at Christmas. 15. Triana, the Isabel II bridge, and the illuminated bridges<\/h2>\n

Crossing the Isabel II bridge (the Triana bridge) at sunset is another of the moments we repeated several times. In the last edition, they decorated the Los Remedios, Isabel II, and San Telmo bridges with vertical light supports and garlands, and the reflection on the Guadalquivir is really beautiful.<\/p>\n

On the other side awaits Triana: Calle Betis with its colorful facades, the Triana Market built on the remains of the Castillo de San Jorge, the El Carmen chapel, and the neighborhood atmosphere that has already been somewhat lost in the historic center.<\/p>\n

At Christmas, Triana sets up its own nativity scenes and lighting, and Calle San Jacinto is crowded. It is a good plan for a whole afternoon: cross walking, tour the neighborhood, return at night with the bridges lit up.<\/p>\n

TIPS:<\/strong> the best spot for the photo of the illuminated bridge is not the bridge itself but the promenade of Calle Betis, about a hundred meters to the south. 16. A flamenco zambomba<\/em>, the most Andalusian Christmas tradition<\/h2>\n

If there is one thing to do in Seville at Christmas that you won’t find in any other European capital, it is a zambomba<\/em>. It is a gathering with flamenco Christmas carols, hand-clapping, guitar, and singing, with roots in Jerez but increasingly widespread throughout Andalusia.<\/p>\n

In December, free zambombas<\/em> are scheduled in community centers in the different districts of the city, in addition to those organized by local clubs, brotherhoods, and bars. The ones in the community centers are usually at 8:00 PM and are the most accessible for those who are just passing through.<\/p>\n

We stumbled upon one almost by chance, following the sound of the clapping. We ended up there for two hours, not fully understanding the lyrics but infected by the atmosphere. Don’t miss it!<\/p>\n

Keep in mind:<\/strong> the zambomba<\/em> program is published at the end of November on the City Hall website. Every December, several ice skating rinks are set up in different parts of the city, and in the latest editions, full Christmas parks with attractions were added. It is the star plan if you are traveling with kids, but it also works at night for adults.<\/p>\n

Prado de San Sebasti\u00e1n is the most convenient if you are staying in the center: it is a ten-minute walk from Puerta de Jerez and there is a subway and tram stop. Santa Claus and the Royal Mailman also appear there on certain days.<\/p>\n

An important fact that corrects several guides that rank it: the large amusement park that for some years was set up at Muelle de las Delicias (Sevilla On Ice) was not repeated in the latest editions<\/strong>. Many articles still list it as if it existed. 18. Navigalia, the Christmas mapping on the Guadalquivir<\/h2>\n

In addition to the show at Plaza de San Francisco, the other big light show in the city is Navigalia<\/em>, an audiovisual mapping with projections onto the waters of the Guadalquivir. It is set up at Muelle de la Sal, between the Triana bridge and the Monument to Tolerance, and draws its aesthetic inspiration from the ’92 Expo.<\/p>\n

19. The campanilleros<\/em> and Christmas carol choirs<\/h2>\n

Campanilleros<\/em> are a beautiful and little-known Sevillian tradition outside Andalusia: groups of singers who roam streets, squares, and churches performing Christmas carols with tambourines, bells, and guitars. Many are brotherhood choirs and have been going out for decades.<\/p>\n

You don’t need to book or pay anything: you bump into them walking through the center, especially on December weekends around the Cathedral, Plaza del Salvador, and Alfalfa. Added to that are the Christmas carol concerts scheduled in theaters and community centers, and the Christmas music cycles organized every year.<\/p>\n

One of the afternoons we enjoyed the most was just like that: without a plan, we heard tambourines from two streets away and ended up standing in a square for half an hour.
