One fact almost no one tells you: almost everything closes on December 25<\/strong>. Observation decks, ice rinks, and some restaurants (especially Asian ones) are among the few things that operate that day. If your trip includes the 25th, book where to eat in advance because open places get full.<\/p>\n

Our experience traveling to New York at Christmas<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The weather in New York at Christmas: what to expect<\/strong><\/h2>\n

One of the topics we are asked about the most is the temperature in New York at Christmas<\/strong>. In December, lows usually range between -5\u00b0C and 2\u00b0C (23-35\u00b0F), while highs rarely exceed 8\u00b0C (46\u00b0F). Does it snow? It can happen, but it’s not a guarantee. Sometimes it snows early in the month, sometimes closer to New Year’s.<\/p>\n

Our advice as digital nomads is clear: dress in layers. Thermal jacket, hat, scarf, and gloves are essential. The cold feels worse due to the wind between buildings than the temperature itself.<\/p>\n

The good news is that almost all places are heated, including public transport. Rockefeller Center: the most famous tree in the world<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Talking about things to do in New York at Christmas<\/strong> and not mentioning the Rockefeller tree would be a travel sin. This giant tree, decorated with more than 50,000 lights and topped by a Swarovski star, is one of the most famous Christmas symbols in the world.<\/p>\n

In 2026, the lighting ceremony will be on Wednesday, December 2<\/strong>, with live musical performances and TV broadcast. It’s free, but beware: hundreds of thousands of people gather, and you have to wait standing for hours. From that day on, the tree stays lit every day until mid-January.<\/p>\n

It’s best to visit it at night when the lights are on. Of course, go with patience: there are always many people. Ice skating at Rockefeller<\/h3>\n

The Rockefeller Center ice rink is small, expensive, and extremely touristy… but it’s also a unique experience. Admission varies by day and time (approximately between 21 and 73 USD, plus about 11 USD for skate rental). If the budget allows, it’s worth doing at least once.<\/p>\n
