During December there are parades, choirs, and free performances in Plaza de la Constitución, the Cervantes Theater, neighborhood squares, and many churches.

We crossed paths with a group of verdiales one afternoon and it was the most different thing we saw: nothing to do with what one imagines when thinking about Christmas. If you like live music, check the municipal program as soon as you arrive, because almost everything is free and almost nothing is announced in tourist guides.

TIPS: the complete program of activities is published in early December on the City Council’s website. A day at the beach (yes, in December)

This is what makes Málaga at Christmas unique compared to any other European city: you can spend the morning walking barefoot through La Malagueta or Pedregalejo and the night watching Christmas lights. You aren’t going to bathe (the water is at 16 degrees), but the beach bars open, people sit in the sun, and there are those who venture into the water anyway.

We had breakfast several mornings on the Pedregalejo promenade and it was our favorite moment of the day. Málaga at Christmas combines something that almost no European destination has: lighting at the level of the great capitals and a climate that lets you walk in short sleeves at noon. Add that most places are free, that the whole center is walkable, and that the city has a beach, castle, and museums for odd days.

Our final advice after those ten nights in Málaga at Christmas: book accommodation with plenty of time in advance, avoid the day of the lighting, buy the Botanical Garden tickets as soon as they come out, and leave yourself a free night to walk without a plan. That is the one you will remember.

Have you already been to Málaga at Christmas or are you organizing the trip? Tell us in the comments, we love reading them.
