History and mythology of Corfu in two minutes<\/h2>\n

Understanding where the island comes from changes how you see things, giving meaning to most of the things to do in Corfu on this list. Corfu appears in the Odyssey<\/em> as Scheria, the land of the Phaeacians, where Odysseus is shipwrecked and Princess Nausicaa finds him on the beach. Outside of mythology, the real history is just as lively. Corinthians founded the city of Corcyra in the 8th century BC, becoming a naval power. 1. Corfu Old Town and the Campiello district<\/h2>\n

The old town of the capital (Kerkyra to the Greeks) has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2007 and is, for us, the first thing to see in Corfu. It\u2019s unlike any other Greek city: four centuries of Venetian rule left behind towering six and seven-story buildings, laundry hanging between balconies, and alleys so narrow you can barely squeeze through.<\/p>\n

Campiello is the oldest neighborhood and our favorite. It’s a maze of stairs, arches, and courtyards where you get lost on purpose\u2014and that\u2019s exactly the point. On our first afternoon, we walked aimlessly and ended up in a tiny square with a Venetian well, four chairs, and a lady watering plants. Nobody else was there. Just three blocks from the crowds.<\/p>\n
