The Kastro neighborhood, the most photogenic corner

Kastro is the oldest part of Chora, occupying the headland between Little Venice and Paraportiani Church. It’s named after the medieval Venetian castle that once stood there, of which almost nothing remains except for the layout of the small streets, which are narrower and twistier than the rest of the town.

It is, without a doubt, one of the top things to do in Mykonos that is most Instagrammable, and it holds the most beautiful streets on the island: Agias Paraskevis, Mitropoleos, and the alleys that wind down to the sea between whitewashed houses with colorful shutters. It is also where the designer shops and galleries are, which stay open until well past midnight.

Our advice is to explore it before 10:00 AM. Little Venice (Alefkandra), the best sunset

If there is one corner of the island that we absolutely loved, this is it. Little Venice is a row of 18th-century houses built directly on the water, with painted wooden balconies hanging over the sea. When the waves are up, the water splashes the tables at the front-row bars.

It is, by far, the best place to watch the sunset. We arrived an hour early, sat on the stone wall, and waited: the sky turns orange behind the windmills and the sea fills with reflections. One of those things that makes the trip worthwhile. Many travelers recommend booking a table at the taverns with terraces over the water, which fill up starting at 7:00 PM in high season, but the stone wall is free and the view is exactly the same.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=»https://www.recalculandoviajes.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/pequena-venecia-mykonos-little-venice.webp» alt=»little venice mykonos» title_text=»little venice mykonos» _builder_version=»4.27.6″ _module_preset=»default» global_colors_info=»{}»][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=»4.24.0″ _module_preset=»default» global_colors_info=»{}»][et_pb_column type=»4_4″ _builder_version=»4.24.0″ _module_preset=»default» global_colors_info=»{}»][et_pb_text _builder_version=»4.27.6″ _module_preset=»default» global_colors_info=»{}»]

5. Panagia Paraportiani Church

It is the most photographed church in Greece and is located right at the entrance to the Kastro neighborhood, on the way to Little Venice. Interestingly, it’s not just one church: it is five chapels built on top of and around each other over several centuries, and the result is a white, irregular shape that looks hand-sculpted.

It has been whitewashed so many times that the edges have softened, and the walls look rounded. At noon, the white reflects so much sunlight that it’s hard to look at it head-on; we saw it late in the afternoon and it looked spectacular. The interior is almost never open, so the visit is limited to the exterior: five minutes, but it’s one of those essential things to do in Mykonos that you cannot skip.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=»https://www.recalculandoviajes.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/iglesia-panagia-paraportiani-mikonos.webp» alt=»panagia paraportiani church mykonos» title_text=»panagia paraportiani church mykonos» _builder_version=»4.27.6″ _module_preset=»default» global_colors_info=»{}»][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=»4.24.0″ _module_preset=»default» global_colors_info=»{}»][et_pb_column type=»4_4″ _builder_version=»4.24.0″ _module_preset=»default» global_colors_info=»{}»][et_pb_text _builder_version=»4.27.6″ _module_preset=»default» global_colors_info=»{}»]

6. You can tour its three floors to see the milling mechanism inside.

We didn’t go inside, as we aren’t big on museums unless they are essential, but many travelers recommend it for this very reason: it is the only place where you can understand how the island functioned before tourism. Petros, the pelican who is a local resident

This is one of those stories that makes a place stay with you. In 1954, a Mykonos fisherman found an injured pelican after a storm, nursed it back to health, and the animal stayed to live on the island. They named it Petros (stone, in Greek), and for over thirty years, it wandered around the port and the taverns like another local, until it passed away in 1986.

The locals didn’t give up: they managed to get another pelican and gave it the same name. Today, there are several scattered around the island and they all respond to Petros. Legend says that crossing paths with it brings good luck and ensures you return to Mykonos.

We weren’t lucky: we spent three days and didn’t see it once, so apparently, we aren’t coming back, haha. It is usually seen around the Old Port, along the Gialos promenade, and sometimes inside a tavern as if it owned the place. Yes, it is expensive, and in August it must be chaos, but there is much more than its reputation suggests: wild beaches in the north, transparent coves in the east, an inland town where life still moves at a different pace, and a Chora that at sunset is one of the most beautiful things we’ve seen in the Cyclades.

If we had to pick three of all the things to do in Mykonos, we would choose the sunset in Little Venice, the full day in Agrari, and the impossible water of Lia. And if you ask us how to beat the crowds, the answer is simple: rent a car, travel outside of July and August, and get out of the southern beaches.

Careful, we don’t recommend it if you are looking for a quiet and cheap island: Greece has much better options for that. But if you want to understand why Mykonos is Mykonos, three well-organized days are more than enough.

Are you going?
