Ravello is located high up on the Amalfi Coast, in the Campania region of southern Italy. Unlike the towns below, which are right on the sea, this one overlooks it from the mountain. Ravello is also small, so it is easily explored on foot. That said: there are climbs and steps, so wear comfortable shoes. SITA buses connect Amalfi<\/a> with Ravello in about 30 minutes. We did it this way and it was perfect: the road climbs the mountain with curves and spectacular views. Although the road can be a bit bouncy, very mountainous, and if you are not used to it, it can make you a bit dizzy (that happened to Facu…). Buy the ticket before boarding (at kiosks or tobacconists) and validate it on board. 1. Villa Rufolo, the most famous postcard<\/h3>\n

As soon as you enter the main square you find the medieval tower covered in ivy: that is the gate to Villa Rufolo. And inside\u2026 what a place! It is a 13th-century complex with an Arab-Norman style cloister, a tower you can climb, and the most photographed gardens in all of Ravello.<\/p>\n

The famous belvedere with its terraces overlooking the sea is the image you then see on every postcard. They say Wagner was inspired here for the gardens of Klingsor in his opera Parsifal, back in 1880. It is well worth entering, even if only for that view.<\/p>\n

2. Villa Cimbrone and the Terrace of Infinity<\/h3>\n

If we liked Villa Rufolo, Villa Cimbrone blew our minds. It is about a 10 or 15-minute walk from the square, along a pedestrian street that is already beautiful in itself. And at the end of the path awaits the star: the Terrace of Infinity<\/strong> (Terrazza dell’Infinito).<\/p>\n

It is a stone balcony full of marble busts looking at the horizon, without railings to cut the view. The sea blends with the sky and the feeling is that of floating between the two. The writer Gore Vidal, who lived in Ravello, even said it was the most beautiful view in the world. We sat for a while to have a coffee and simply watch the people go by. And from the medieval we pass to the ultra-modern. The Oscar Niemeyer Auditorium is a work by the famous Brazilian architect, with that white and curved shape so characteristic of him, like a giant wave leaning over the mountain. It generates controversy among the locals (some love it, others not so much), but it is a curious contrast in such a historic town.<\/p>\n

It functions as a concert and event hall throughout the year. Even if you don’t go in, just looking at it from the outside and checking out the views from its viewpoint makes the trip worth it. Once you have seen the two main villas, we recommend walking along Via San Giovanni del Toro. It is one of the most stately streets in the town, full of ancient palaces that are now luxury hotels. You can breathe that aristocratic air that Ravello has, different from the bustle below.<\/p>\n

From several points in this area, there are also viewpoints with sea views. It is ideal for walking aimlessly, taking photos, and discovering corners that don’t appear in the guidebooks. The Ravello Festival: music with sea views<\/h2>\n

Ravello is not called \u00abthe city of music\u00bb by chance. Every summer the Ravello Festival takes place, one of the oldest festivals in Italy, and most of the concerts happen on the belvedere of Villa Rufolo. Imagine listening to an orchestra with the Mediterranean in the background\u2026 something unique.<\/p>\n

In 2026 the festival runs from July 4 to September 5, with its traditional Dawn Concert as one of the most sought-after moments. We didn’t go to a concert on our visit, but it stays on the pending list for our return. What to eat and buy in Ravello<\/h2>\n

The great protagonist here is the lemon. Throughout the Amalfi Coast, those giant, scented lemons are grown, and in Ravello, limoncello is almost a religion. Try it ice-cold after a meal; we were conquered.<\/p>\n

Beyond the drink, you will find lemon candies, jams, perfumes, and a lot of handcrafted products. Another typical thing of the area is the hand-painted ceramics, with vivid colors and sea designs. It is a nice souvenir to take home, although watch the weight in your suitcase.<\/p>\n

For eating, there is everything from elegant restaurants to simpler trattorias. Order fresh pasta, the catch of the day, or some dish with lemon and you won’t fail. How much time should I spend in Ravello?<\/h2>\n

One quiet day is enough to see the main things: the two villas, the square, the Duomo, and walking around the town without rush. That is how we did it and we returned happy. If you are one of those who go into everything and spend hours in each garden, add more time.<\/p>\n

Now, if you can stay overnight, it is another world. When the day-trippers leave, the town is almost empty and you have those views all to yourself. We recommend it especially if you really want to disconnect and treat yourself. Best time to visit Ravello<\/h2>\n

Spring (April, May, June) and early autumn (September, October) are the best times. The weather is good, the gardens are beautiful, and you don’t have the sweltering heat or the crowds of mid-summer. We are fans of traveling in the shoulder season precisely for that reason.<\/p>\n

Summer (July and August) coincides with the festival and the most beautiful moment of the gardens, but also with the peak of tourists and prices. In winter, all the movement slows down and some places reduce hours, although the view from the Terrace of Infinity on a clear winter day is legendary. Where to stay: Ravello, Amalfi or Salerno?<\/h2>\n

This is the big question. Staying in Ravello is a luxury: tranquility, views, and that exclusive atmosphere of palaces converted into hotels. But it is also among the most expensive areas. If your budget allows it and you want to experience the town at night, it is a unique experience.<\/p>\n

Amalfi, where we stayed, is a great, well-connected base for moving around the entire coast. And Salerno, a bit further away, is the most economical option with good transport. From any of the three, you can get to Ravello without a problem, so choose according to your wallet and your travel style.<\/p>\n
