In this guide, you’ll find the 18 best places, a map with everything marked, where to sleep, how to get there by ferry, and even a hidden little beach we discovered by chance… and which is now on the list of the best beaches we’ve ever visited in the world.

Rab is one of the Kvarner islands, in northern Croatia, and it has something that makes it unique in the entire Adriatic: sandy beaches. Yes, you read that right. While most Croatian islands are rocky, Rab boasts the highest number of sandy beaches in all of Croatia. We arrived after nearly two months of traveling through the country and its islands, and Rab really surprised us.[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=»ads iati primeros parrafos 5off (2026) – EN» _builder_version=»4.27.6″ _module_preset=»default» global_module=»15677″ saved_tabs=»all» locked=»off» global_colors_info=»{}»]

🌍 Travel Insurance: 5% Off with IATI Seguros! 🌟

Take advantage of this offer and travel safe.

Get My 5% Discount

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=»4.27.6″ _module_preset=»default» global_colors_info=»{}»]

Things to do in Rab Summary

Category

Key details

Destination

Island of Rab, Croatia (Adriatic Sea).

Best time

June to September (July and August for warmer water).

Recommended duration

3 to 4 days.

Transport

Own car (recommended for more freedom).

Main attraction

The largest number of sandy beaches in all of Croatia.

Must-visit places

Rab Old Town, the 4 bell towers, Paradise Beach (Lopar), and untouched coves (Sahara, Kandarola).

Typical cuisine

Rapska torta (almond cake) and fresh local fish.

Access

Stinica-Mišnjak ferry (frequent, no prior booking, pay at port).

Pro tip

Explore the south coast and the Kalifront peninsula to find hidden, uncrowded coves.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=»https://www.recalculandoviajes.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/playa-rab-croacia.webp» alt=»Rab beach Croatia» title_text=»Rab beach Croatia» _builder_version=»4.27.6″ _module_preset=»default» global_colors_info=»{}»][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=»4.24.0″ _module_preset=»default» global_colors_info=»{}»][et_pb_column type=»4_4″ _builder_version=»4.24.0″ _module_preset=»default» global_colors_info=»{}»][et_pb_text _builder_version=»4.27.6″ _module_preset=»default» global_colors_info=»{}»]

When to go to the island of Rab

To enjoy all the things to do in Rab, the best time is from June to September, when the sea is perfect for swimming. The island boasts about 2,600 hours of sunshine per year, one of the sunniest areas in the Adriatic, so good weather is almost guaranteed. In July and August, the water temperature is around 25 degrees: we went in early July and swam every day without a second thought.

That said, August is the busiest month and accommodation prices skyrocket. If you can choose, late May, June, or September are a great bet: the sea is still nice, the beaches are much emptier, and you save a good amount of money on lodging. From November to April, the island is very quiet and most restaurants and hotels are closed, so it’s not the best time to visit.

Something to keep in mind: the northeast coast is exposed to the Bura, a strong, cold wind typical of the Kvarner region, which is why that side of the island looks so arid and barren.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=»https://www.recalculandoviajes.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/rab-casco-historico.webp» alt=»Rab historic center» title_text=»Rab historic center» _builder_version=»4.27.6″ _module_preset=»default» global_colors_info=»{}»][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=»4.24.0″ _module_preset=»default» global_colors_info=»{}»][et_pb_column type=»4_4″ _builder_version=»4.24.0″ _module_preset=»default» global_colors_info=»{}»][et_pb_text _builder_version=»4.27.6″ _module_preset=»default» global_colors_info=»{}»]

1. The most imposing one is the bell tower of the Church of St. Mary, from the 12th century, which, at nearly 26 meters, is the tallest on the island.

In season, you can climb this bell tower by paying a fee of a few euros, and many travelers say the views of the rooftops and the Adriatic are spectacular. Its facade of pink and white stone stripes and its location overlooking the sea make it truly beautiful to see.

Over these years of traveling, we’ve seen many churches in Europe, and what we liked most about this one is the setting: the small square with views of the Adriatic is a perfect place to sit for a while in the shade. Many travelers recommend them for exactly that reason, so if you’re looking for total peace (and don’t mind nudism), this corner of the island is for you.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=»ads iati Middle seguro de viaje (2026) – EN» _builder_version=»4.27.6″ _module_preset=»default» global_module=»15701″ saved_tabs=»all» locked=»off» global_colors_info=»{}»]

☝️ TRAVEL SAFE – 5% OFF IATI TRAVEL INSURANCE!!
👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️ A must-have for stress-free travel! 🌎✈️ ➜ Get a Quote, Compare & Buy

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=»4.24.0″ _module_preset=»default» global_colors_info=»{}»][et_pb_column type=»4_4″ _builder_version=»4.24.0″ _module_preset=»default» global_colors_info=»{}»][et_pb_text _builder_version=»4.27.6″ _module_preset=»default» global_colors_info=»{}»]

10. It is operated by the local shipping company Rapska Plovidba, the crossing lasts only 20 minutes, and in high season it runs practically all day, with more than 20 daily departures. We arrived this way, with the car: we bought the ticket at the port, because it cannot be bought online for a specific time and boarding is on a first-come, first-served basis.

The ticket costs about €4.20 per person in high season and around €17.50 for a standard car, per trip. Keep in mind: in mid-summer, significant queues form in Stinica, so arrive with plenty of time (ideally an hour or more early). You can check updated schedules on the official website of Rapska Plovidba.

Other options: if you’re coming from the north (Istria, Rijeka, or Slovenia), it’s better to drive via the island of Krk, which is directly reachable by bridge. From the port of Valbiska (Krk), the Jadrolinija ferry departs for Lopar, in the north of Rab: the crossing lasts about an hour and twenty minutes and is more expensive than the Stinica one, but you save many kilometers of winding road on the mainland. And if you’re traveling without a car, there are passenger catamarans from Rijeka to the city of Rab and seasonal connections with Novalja, on the island of Pag. We rented a car to tour Croatia and used it to the fullest in Rab: the island is easy to drive, distances are short (you have about 15 minutes from the city of Rab to Lopar), and many of the best beaches, such as our hidden little beach, can only be reached comfortably by private vehicle. If you haven’t reserved yours yet, it’s best to compare in advance because in summer prices rise quickly:

If you’re going without a car, there are local buses that connect the city of Rab with Lopar and other villages, taxi boats from the port to the Frkanj and Suha Punta peninsulas, and bike/e-bike rentals in the city of Rab and in Lopar: with more than 100 km of marked routes, the bike is a great way to reach the coves of Kalifront where cars don’t go.
