Why visit Plitvice Lakes in Croatia?<\/h2>\n

Plitvice Lakes National Park is the oldest and most famous in Croatia, and it has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1979. It is located in the center of the country, halfway between Zagreb and the Dalmatian coast, which is why it makes it onto almost every Croatian travel itinerary.<\/p>\n

We visited at the beginning of July, in the height of summer. We stayed 4 nights in Zagreb and drove from there to spend the day at the park. We left very early, still in the dark, and it was the best decision of the trip: we arrived with the first visitors and were able to walk the lower lakes’ walkways almost alone. Two hours later… it felt like a different place, packed with groups everywhere.<\/p>\n

If you are planning your route through the country, we recommend combining Plitvice with the coast and the islands. We then headed towards Trogir<\/a>, Hvar<\/a>, and Kor\u010dula<\/a>, and the combination of mountains, lakes, and the sea is spectacular. Things to do in Plitvice Lakes: the highlights<\/h2>\n

The park is divided into two large areas: the Upper Lakes and the Lower Lakes. Each one has its own charm, and ideally, you should visit both in one day. 1. Veliki Slap, the Great Waterfall<\/h3>\n

It is the highest waterfall in Croatia, with a drop of about 78 meters. It is truly impressive. You can reach it by walking from Entrance 1 in about 15-20 minutes, going down the path that overlooks the Lower Lakes canyon. We arrived early and were able to take photos without people… something almost impossible after 10 a.m. in summer. 2. The Lower Lakes Canyon<\/h3>\n

For us, this is the most photogenic area of the entire park. The four lower lakes are tucked between limestone cliffs, and the wooden walkways snake literally over the water. The turquoise color here is surreal: you can see the fish, the sunken logs, the bottom… everything! 3. The canyon viewpoints<\/h3>\n

From the upper trail that borders the canyon, there are several viewpoints with panoramic views of the lower lakes and Veliki Slap. The view from above, with the walkways filled with little dots of people and the turquoise water below, is one of those images you will never forget. 4. Lake Kozjak and the electric boat ride<\/h3>\n

Kozjak is the largest lake in the park and the one that connects the two areas. The electric boat ride crossing it is included in the ticket and is a perfect rest for your legs mid-tour. However, keep in mind: in high season, long queues form to board. 5. The Upper Lakes<\/h3>\n

The upper area is more forested and quieter than the canyon. Here, the lakes cascade one after another, separated by natural travertine barriers where the water falls into dozens of little waterfalls. You walk among trees, with the sound of water in the background the whole time. 6. Veliki Pr\u0161tavac and the upper area waterfalls<\/h3>\n

Among the Upper Lakes, the Veliki and Mali Pr\u0161tavac waterfalls are the stars. The walkway passes so close to Veliki Pr\u0161tavac that you get misted by the spray… an incredible relief in the July heat, hehehe. 7. Wooden walkways over the water<\/h3>\n

More than just a specific place, they are the experience that defines the park. Miles of wooden walkways without railings that cross lakes, border waterfalls, and pass over crystal-clear streams. Walk in comfortable shoes and be careful on rainy days, because the wood gets slippery. 8. Lake Pro\u0161\u0107ansko<\/h3>\n

It is the highest and second-largest lake in the park, the point where the entire system begins. Far fewer people arrive here because it is at the end of the Upper Lakes trail, and that is precisely why it is worth it: pure nature and silence. 9. The panoramic train<\/h3>\n

It is not actually a train, but a panoramic bus that connects the park’s stations (St1, St2, and St3). It is included in the entry and is the way to return to the starting point without retracing your steps. 10. Rastoke, the village of waterfalls<\/h3>\n

About 30 minutes by car on the way to Zagreb is Rastoke, a small village built between waterfalls and watermills. Many travelers recommend stopping there to complete the day, especially if you are driving to or from the park on the D1 route. National Park tickets have seasonal prices and, very importantly: they are for a scheduled entry time. In summer, spots sell out days (and even weeks!) in advance, so buy your ticket online on the park’s official website<\/a> as soon as you have your confirmed date.<\/p>\n

Some facts to keep in mind regarding tickets:<\/p>\n

  • Children under 7 enter for FREE, and there are discounts for children aged 7 to 18 and students.<\/li>\n
  • The 2-day ticket is cheaper than buying two individual tickets.<\/li>\n
  • The ticket includes the electric boat, the panoramic train, and visitor insurance.<\/li>\n
  • Parking is NOT included: it costs \u20ac2 per hour in summer.<\/li>\n

    Plitvice Lakes opening hours<\/h3>\n

    Plitvice Lakes is open 365 days a year, but the hours change according to the season: in summer (June to August) it opens approximately from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., in spring and autumn from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and in winter (November to March) it is reduced to 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Pay attention to one important detail: in winter, Entrance 2 closes and only Entrance 1 operates, and some trails in the Upper Lakes may be closed due to ice.     Plitvice Lakes has 8 marked visitor programs (A, B, C, E, F, H, and the K variants) that combine trails, boat, and panoramic train.     We did one of the complete routes and visited both areas of the park, crossing Lake Kozjak by boat. It took us about 6 hours with photo stops (which were MANY, hahaha) and a picnic included. If you have the whole day, we blindly recommend a complete route like C or H: you see the best of both areas without killing yourself walking.<\/p>\n

    If you are short on time, B or F are good options.     Entrance 1 or Entrance 2? Which one to use<\/h2>\n

    This is one of the most frequently asked questions, and it’s not trivial: when you buy the ticket online, you have to choose which of the two gates you will enter through, and you cannot change it later. Both entrances to Plitvice Lakes are on the D1 route, about 3 km apart, and each one has its own parking.<\/p>\n

    • Entrance 1 (Rastova\u010da)<\/strong>: is the northern gate and the most popular one. It is above the Lower Lakes canyon, just a few minutes’ walk from the viewpoints and Veliki Slap. If you want to start the day with the most famous postcard of the park, this is your entrance. It is the only one open all year round.<\/li>\n
    • Entrance 2 (Hladovina)<\/strong>: is the southern gate, closer to the Upper Lakes. Ideal if you prefer to start with the high area and leave the canyon for the end, when the large groups have already left. It closes in winter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Our advice: first choose the route you want to do, and that will define the entrance. Routes A, B, and C start at Entrance 1; E, F, and H start at Entrance 2.       Recommended itinerary for a day at Plitvice<\/h2>\n

      This is how we organized our day at Plitvice Lakes, and this is how we would do it again:<\/p>\n

      • 6:00<\/strong> \u2014 Departure from Zagreb by car (about 2 hours of travel).<\/li>\n
      • 8:00<\/strong> \u2014 Entrance through Entrance 1 with the first time slot. Parking still empty.<\/li>\n
      • 8:15<\/strong> \u2014 Canyon viewpoints and descent to Veliki Slap, almost no people.<\/li>\n
      • 9:00 to 11:30<\/strong> \u2014 Lower Lakes walkways calmly, enjoying the turquoise water.<\/li>\n
      • 12:00<\/strong> \u2014 Electric boat across Lake Kozjak (there might be a queue here).<\/li>\n
      • 12:45<\/strong> \u2014 Picnic on the shore of the lake. Bring your own food: inside the park, there is little supply and it is expensive.<\/li>\n
      • 13:30 to 16:30<\/strong> \u2014 Full Upper Lakes, with a stop at Veliki Pr\u0161tavac and Lake Pro\u0161\u0107ansko.<\/li>\n
      • 16:45<\/strong> \u2014 Panoramic train back to Entrance 1.<\/li>\n
